Excellent! Hope this works out for you, glad they're gonna sort you out. Really enjoying this thread!

Don't know if they lurk here but I hardly think so as it's not really their 'thing'!

However, just had a reply to my e-mail to them and basically, they are going to help sort it out! It's going back on Tuesday and they can keep it until it's all better again.

I'd like to get it all fixed, the bodywork repaired and then I'm going to flog the Honda and use the BTR as my everyday car. Stupid? Yes, but I don't care, I do naff all mileage and have the life expectancy of a mayfly so I may as well enjoy it.

Make sure you see the work being done - and i mean the engine's top end in pieces.

"Work" does not mean 2x cans of Amtech engine restorer (as endorsed by Quentin Willson).

^ This.

If I were you I'd surprise them with a visit when they've assured you that the work is well & truly underway. You can always tell them that you "just wanted to see what the inside of a Bentley engine looks like".

Never wanted an 'Eight'. Seems like the worst of all worlds as in: the expense of running and repairing one of these old heaps without the go or the proper luxury you get in the 'better' models.

But, they are pretty rare as they didn't sell that many but I WANT all the fripperies that go with 15 to the gallon and rampant rot and depreciation!

My old girl is now tucked up safe and sound in a workshop/store and can stay there until Monday. I really miss her (sob!). The Honda is a thoroughly worthy car and interesting in its own right, but... it's not a Bentley! There really is something about BTRs that defy logic, the way they go coupled with silence and total comfort.  Oh and fuck me, they don't half get some attention! Every bugger in the area knows about the Bentley parked in Carlton Road and so many people have come up to me to ask about it or ask where it is at the moment. One or two have even been crushed when I said I HADN'T got rid of it already!

Yes, I know she's got a problem but she is a 'proper' old thing and worth repairing. I looked at so many that didn't drive as well, or had bodywork as good or far more miles on the clock or no history or paintwork so recent you could smell it or... you get the picture. If it is the valve stem seals ( as I strongly suspect) then it's sort of excusable: a longish period of inactivity lets them harden and then sudden use smashes them to bits (well cracks them if one is to be less dramatic :)  ) which allows oil through and smoke.

There is a Bentley service bulletin that details how to change them without stripping the engine, sounds really quite easy, look on Flying Spares, engine, oil seals and gaskets, valve stem seals and next to the picture of the seals is the bulletin.

My car habit was well fuelled by a bloke called Ian who had a little patch in Kelso, and most of them were paid for by helping out, occasionally selling a car or doing collection runs and so forth. I only wanted the unsellable weird crap anyway.

?

Flap renton now theres a blast from the past that lot was regularly full of shit,

The man couldn't lie straight in bed and as long as you dealt with him knowing that and where prepared you could get a good deal.

I was chatting to him just last month and hes still selling aswell as doing recovery and spends a lot of time at the scrappy at Jedburgh.

This will not go down well, but I have always steered well away from luxury cars. I have lusted after a few but know that any repair bills would ruin me financially. Hence the avoidance. Great to own, great to be seen in but caveat emptor etc.

The repair bills reflect the purchase cost. Going back to the dealer may be successful in this case, but next time you are on your own really...

It will cost money. A lot of money.

Lovely car though!

I concur - I have only been as adventurous as SD1's, senators and granadas.

Yep, the recovery stuff came after trying a more upmarket place in Berwick. I genuinely never saw him do a dishonest deal when I knew him - a few cars certainly had their issues, but he got burned pretty often (the camper van I got was a good example - we both looked over it and figured it was okay, then took it to get some other bits dealt with and discovered the entire front end was hanging out of it). Some of the stuff I heard about from the past, though, I can see where a reputation could be earned! When he took on the recovery I think he went part-time elsewhere - funny moment on the recovery, I sold my MR2 when moving down to the midlands and the chap that bought it (with stuck alternator) planned to do the "drove so far and it conked out" line.

Ian knew the car. Much hilarity.

Is the scrappy still going? That place looked like every environmental disaster at once. Surprising amount of unusual cars there though, my Alfa Sprint ended there and I'm trying to remember if my Mk 1 Escort ended up with Brian, or came from him. Possibly both.

You'll probably know the garage that made the mistake of MOTing an X1/9 with a fibreglass floor that I then ended up with whilst the ink was still wet, too, then ;)

Well you cannot say fairer than that.

Well the Bentley 8 I went to look at was nowt special. It looked nice enough but the battery was buggered and a bit smokey starting up. The wood had been re-done and not very well. Basically it was no better than my spirit and got bid to £3750 reserve not met which I thought was strong money from a car auction that they don't even let you run the car before it goes across the block. I might have to get on with sorting the issues on mine over the winter as prices seem to be on the up. They will only bankrupt you if you let them. They are nothing special to work on and if anything easier than a lot of 30 year old cars as everything comes undone.

@Lord Sward

Well if you spend an average years salary on a nearly new senator and trade it in 2 years later for an average monthly salary is easily done.

There was another who lived in the town who bought a brand new cavalier calibre and took his own life when he got into spiraling debt after missing a few payments.

I'll take the Bentley please.

If I ever kill myself over a Vauxhall Cavalier, I hope my family tell everyone it was an auto-erotic asphyxiation accident to save themselves some embarrassment.

When are you going to update your thread?

I love those Royce-Bentley threads.

Is AEA a likely cause of your demise?

No, not at all.

I'm very careful with the knots and stuff.

.... and address the envelope, containing the padlock keys, to a verry verry discrete acquantance ;)

That Bentley eight made strong money then mate. I really would he glad to have given that a swerve as your RR is a much nicer car. And Exeter auctions... shudder! There used to be a rule there that only cars that were terminally fucked were allowed on the site!

I should know, I used to buy at Saltash and then bang them through Exeter without doing a thing and make good money! School holidays were a brilliant time to sell there and the night auctions. I've even bought from there on a Monday, realised it was shit, left it there and let it go through on the Wednesday night and come out on top!

I hate trying to buy at Exeter but selling was always fun. There are so many bids 'off the wall' you could sell bricks! :)

In years to come, your RR will be worth a lot more than an Eight and a damn sight more desirable - most of them don't even have the lovely wood door cappings, just a derisory bit on the top. I like a decent bit of tree on my doors...

Just been and got my Turbo R back from the storage unit/garage where it was stored. I really do not trust the guy I left it with (I usually trust everyone!) and all he did was go on about the valve stem seals and the valve guides need replacing and there's a hole in the exhaust and the stink out of the exhaust is appalling and on and on...
Also, it's now smoking pretty much constantly and looks bad. Still goes well though as I found as it was being driven to....

The paintwork specialists!

Always do things in the order of importance, obviously sort out the engine is a huge first, so I'm having all the dents and scratches sorted instead!
It's having all the doors done (dents on drivers side, previous bad repair on passengers), the mirrors, a couple of bits that need touching up (chips) and everything else that he can find. Also, one tiny bit of rust is being done so she should be back to 'truly splendid' very shortly.

I'm paying a huge amount to have two really good guys work on it over the weekend so there's no other work being done and they can get it done in peace. They are starting today and it should be done in time for it to go to Specialist Cars early next week.

Now, some of you may question my sanity. Is it really wise to get the paintwork done when there is such a glaring fault with the running? Well no obviously! But, the car is a 'keeper' so it needs to be done anyway and the engine will get sorted out soon enough so as it was booked for this weekend, why not?

Make sure you take pictures of your newly fettled paintwork before dropping it at Specialist Cars...just in case.

No fear mate. The chap doing the work is taking loads of pictures, before, during and after. I hate tatty cars: if you are going to 'smoke' around in something flash, it's got to be right, can't have the pose disappear in a cloud of dents and shaky reflections now can we!

:) :) :)

I have sort of resigned myself to just spending whatever needs spending on this thing. Not my usual attitude at all but this is a long held dream car for me and I want it right. It's still the 'right' car as I love the way it drives and how good the suspension is and the structure, so if it needs the heads rebuilding... so be it. If it needs a new turbo, or whatever, get on with it!

Yes, I didn't expect to be spending money on it straight away (but it's an old Bentley, what the fuck did you expect you wanker!?)  but if I've got to bite the bullet and get it done..

I would never be happy until it looked right anyway, I'm a right fussy sod. I will have to sell the Honda to pay for all this work (depending on how much the engine costs!) and will probably use the BTR as an everyday car.

Global warming? What's that?

I will definitely get another car, but a cheap one, I may even enter all the raffles in the hope of a bit of good fortune... that Merc looks nice:)

There's a delightful perversity in the idea of owning a Bentley Turbo R, then driving about in a Reliant.
