I wanted a new car...

I added up what I've spent on buying all of the cars I currently own and it added up to a whopping £2500. Yes I could probably get something fairly modern for that kinda money but where would the fun be in that when I could have a 305, 360, alto, tata. camry, lada, e36... As for buying a new car for reliability? What a load of pish.

The great thing about all the second hand cars we own between us is that they were never new themselves, and nobody ever said at the time that new cars were shit.

I only have a modern car. That doesn't mean I don't drool over chod though. I have to have a modern car with warranty etc 'cos I just cannot work on them anymore. I LONG for an old heap I can play with/tinker to my hearts content but I have nowhere to keep it and road parking here is ridiculous.

I do feel guilty being on here with nothing interesting that I own. But, I live vicariously through all your adventures and remember all the times I have done similar things and the scrapes I've gotten into while doing them!

Being a cripple sucks big time. I reckon I could do an hours work on a car every couple of days so long as it doesn't involve bending or anything requiring strength - it took me two days to polish my car and I was wrecked for a week afterwards.

I really try to love my Honda and it is a worthy car but I don't love it or feel any sort of emotional attachment to it.

It's ironic: for the first time in my life I have the money and time to play with old heaps and my body lets the side down. I hope you guys will let me stay and continue to post drivel and live (a little) through your experiences?

That's a rather better way of saying what pissed me off when this started.  It's not that I hate modern cars - after all I own one, as someone pointed out - it's just that every few weeks we have another ALL MODERN CARS ARE SHIT AND EVERYONE WHO DRIVES ONE IS A WANKER thread and it goes nowhere and brings out the worst in people (not least me) and is quite tedious.

But some people are enjoying it so I guess I'm out of step.  Maybe I should just spend less time on here, then I wouldn't notice/care.

Nothing personal against the OP, as I said.  This week we've had the Flynn bollocks and several other irritating non-threads that seemed to overwhelm any actual shite content, and this just pushed me over the edge into hulk mode. Sorry to Roverageous for any offense, but I stand by my general point (while recognising that others disagree).

Carry on.

I don't buy into the "it's new so therefore reliable" thing either, I'd have a German TDi on a 3 year lease if I did, but it's inevitable that in general cars that have been exposed to the elements for a shorter amount of time and done less graft are going to need less fettling to things lie brakes and exhausts, wheel bearings, less rust etc. The newest car I've had was also the most unreliable from a starting point of view. No one is going to cry that my street furnature Kia is getting doors opened on it in car parks every day, or that the interior is getting trashed from carrying stuff, but I wouldn't want to inflict that on something I care about.

Huge respect to those of you who who really do live the shite dream, do the epic collections and have more cars than days of the week. It's what makes this place great. If I ever get a job where I can walk or get the bus again then I'd rejoin the shite lifestyle no bother.

It's probably quite easy to keep weird old cars if you have multiple weird old cars to swap about when one needs work.

I live in a terraced house right opposite a junction for a care home with parking for one car and two cars temporarily, trying to bundle my love of crap old cars and the needs I have into one car is a huge dilemma.

Yeah, to be fair, I do see that. There are times when I'm fettling one of my cars in the rain when I do think "I can see the appeal of new." But thinking about it, when I had more money and less time, I'd just send my cars to garages/specialists when they needed a tinker. It's rare that there's a problem that actually stops me driving one of my cars, just the inevitable nagging list from driving stuff with over 100,000 miles on (Perodua excluded because it's only on 25k and so far has needed sod all bar a service).

But being older, it means repairs tend to cost less even if you do send your motors to a garage. Not main dealer, so actually sensible hourly rate, and lots of pattern parts available - some good, some otherwise. I'm pretty sure that I worked out that the stripey BX cost me less than a grand for six months motoring, including ALL costs - purchase, insurance, tax, fuel and repairs. The Perodua is getting on for six months on the fleet, and owes me a good chunk less than that. I've probably spent more on washing it than I have on repairs.

Reliability?

The 205 has been parked up for six weeks or more.  Fired up first turn of the key yesterday.

Mine started after 7 years parked in a hedge

Did have to change the battery though.

What does that say apart from your car has a good battery?

It says it's reliable...  ;)

I'm not sure, use it to commute in for a year then tell me it's reliable (I'm sure it would be).

Some car comics' ideas of a long term test is six months or even less sometimes, what does that test exactly?

Oi, with your shite portfolio Skiz you're staying, that's an order!

Personally, I'm waiting for the 347th 'all banger racers are wankers' thread to kick off. It's been a while...

Well in Sinsburies car park at BSE someone wasn't a happy chappy with their 64 plate Merc estate as it was being dragged onto the back of a Manchetts recovery truck. Modern toss simply have way too many computers to sulk/go wrong on
