Aside from a (seemingly very easy to fix) rumbly wheelbearing, and still having water not proper coolant in (will be rectified soon, now I've done a decent mileage with it all staying in), yeah, me too.

But I can't afford to run it, realistically, when I'm also looking to sort life out hopefully for long-term happiness with someone :D

Rear wheel bearing?

Get a BIG breaker bar, took a 4ft one to crack the hub nut off on my XJ40.

You gotta get your priorities right.

There is only one thing that's important in a man's life, and that's having proper shite to drive.

Plus, with a car like that, you don't really need a girlfriend.

My Bentley does 14 MPG (which is a vast improvement on the 10MPG it did before plugs/filters were changed) so stop whinging! :)

Not one of my various XJ-S's did anything like that economy.... must be the way I used to drive:) Also, I always used to find they under-steered like pigs when 'pushing on' especially over about 100... Yes, I really was a total fuckwit.

As to costs of ownership: can you not just keep it for best? You have plenty of other cars to use for the mundane trips, the Jaguar should be used to make life feel... EPIC! :)

I have to say, there is nothing in (motoring) life that feels as good as a nice Jaguar. They have a specialness about them that belies their price. In a lot of ways, they are nicer to drive than my Turbo! Something about sinking into the leather seats and the car sort of cuddles you, cossets you and makes you feel special in a way that few other manufacturers have ever managed. We used to call it 'showroom appeal' and they have it in spades.

My dad used to have a S3 XJ12 from 1985-87. However it was BL one and pre-HE. The house was full of glasses and the glovebox full of Tiger Tokens. Gov fuel figure for urban cycle was 10.9mpg. Don't think it managed it a lot of time wafting around locally.

The killer bill was circa £800 for a set of discs/pads done at Taggarts - something over £2100 in today's money.

Offside front. Probably only needs grease & nipping up :)

Not whinging, just being realistic - I'm racking up 2,500-3,000 miles a month at the moment and all of my cars are various degrees of "not going to put up with much of this" apart from the SLK, which I really don't want to inflict that on.

Keeping it - sure, if I find a house for under £1000/month rent in actual Nottingham with 5 off-street parking spaces and a garage... (trust me, I have looked) :)

For the fuel economy, I'd be more at home in a C140 V8 coupé in terms of "feeling confident maintaining & using it" :)

Yeah, but to be fair, it took me the better part of four decades to realise that.

Well, I got another couple of decades to enjoy the lessons, then :)

I'd rather walk than LPG a V12 Jaguar "because I can't afford to run it" ;)

Fuel is fuel, it'll sound and run the same.

Piece of piss then :)

Yeah, but the ratsnest under the bonnet would be even more nightmarish, and there'd be no boot space, and it's not the cost of fuel that concerns me, it's the cost of keeping the car in the condition I'd want overall whilst either storing it outside :( or using it daily. 17mpg doesn't worry me in isolation. It's 17mpg and keeping on top of a 24 year old British car's maintenance when I'm working mad, unpredictable times :)

Now, if I had the funds to throw it at someone else every couple of months for fettling, it'd be a different story as it's a fantastic thing to drive :D

FWIW if I do feel like there's nothing more I can do to improve it without getting into big spends, and I can't store it, I'll be really hoping it appeals to someone who wants to do a deal with a nice X300 XJ6 or X308 XJ8. Right now the interior is getting some attention, cleaning the carpets and replacing missing underlay.

Went out earlier and spotted a V12 convertible and it's driver marooned with it's hazards on, coming back 2 hrs later it was still there so i stopped to see if the guy was alright , needed any drinks or anything etc given the heat. AA were apparently en route as the fuel injection relay had fubarred so hope you carry a spare .

What a beautiful machine these are up close, wife said not a f*cking chance of buying one though    :-(

Had to do an office day today and I feel the SLK needed a rest after going to Devon etc. - plus I knew the XJS had fuel in. Had been going to move it earlier and the battery was dead because some idiot forgot to close the boot properly - charged it up and figured the run would do it good.

According to the odo/trip, that's 500 miles covered now, and today there was no "cautious", took it out and drove entirely normally. Aside from A/C needing regas/leak attending to (I know not which, it has a recon pump and the pump engages, might be down to leaky vacuum not controlling temperature for all I know as I can hear it whistling) a very pleasant drive.

I bought it looking for a bit of a challenge and fun. It's been lovely to experience. But it's going. Trying to get my life under control and get a rational, manageable fleet, a V12 Jaguar does not fit! It's been bloody lovely experiencing it. Right now, I'm worried I'm going to want to start trying to improve little things like the interior trim/headlining, and I can't afford to do so.

Not sure what to turn it into yet - a Mercedes S500 Coupé is the obvious candidate as a car I am extremely comfortable running and maintaining. If anyone's got an XJS-urge, though...

Swap you for a ........................ ;):) :)

You thought I was going to say AX didn't you. You did!

You're right, I was lol.

5 litre Jaguar doesn't fit your life.

Goes out and buys a 5.4 litre Merc lol!

I know my M119 V8s really well, and trust how post-W201 Mercedes are assembled :)

Other options will be considered, RX8. All sorts of things - just not the temptation to restore a Jaguar XJS when British cars aren't my comfort zone!

British cars, you say?

Perfect for bimbling around Nottinghamshire.

NO BRITISH CARS.

Though I'd love to try that just because I think it would be the oldest car I'd ever driven, not counting an old barn-find A40 driven 800 ft.

It's up for sale. I think it's a £4K car, looking at other XJSs, it's good underneath and pretty good on top with some areas needing attention, drives well, a service wouldn't go amiss. For cash I'm flexible, I already have interest in it but the usual "if you can" or "in a few..." - but that gives an idea of what sort of cars I'd be thinking of. I would replace the mirror glass though.

MoT April. 91,600 miles, goes nicely enough, needs underlay (missing when I got it), a few little cosmetic jobs here & there. Most unsightly bit is delaminating on the windscreen and it needs a growler or leaper.

Would it drive to Newcastle?

Newcastle under-lyme , No problem

Newcastle upon tyne, problem.

Sorry could not resist, sure both would be fine though

And back, I think, it's sat in traffic without issues. I even found a good slope to burp the cooling system after the last refill :) 17mpg average at the moment.

All this talk of 17mpg.  When I first moved in with my missus, I used a carb-fed V8 Disco and she used a V12 E-Type.  We'd go for a drink of one of us scraped 12mpg.

Posted

I actually don't mind the 17mpg - it's more than I'd want to get into perfecting the car rather than just enjoying it for what it is :)
