Cockroaches of The Road

Out here in NZ, you cannot move for 20 year old + Toyotas, they are everywhere from the flashest suburbs downwards. These were all spotted today in Auckland (several more I was not a position to photograph). Apologies for the poor quality but I don't like hanging around in case people clock me taking pictures of their motor! Also a few bonus non Toyotas!

The moment I read the phrase 'cockroaches of the road' I thought 'Toyota Carina E'.  Not so much the Tipo but nice to see such a tidy one all the same.

Pretty much the only things you see that are "old" round here are mk4 Golfs, mk1 Focus, pre facelift Almeras and mk4 Fiestas, mk2 Puntos and mk2 Clios. All looking very rough and driven in a terrifying manner.

Nice Manta! I'm saying that like I've never seen it, which is still true. We need another meet up (one which I may be able to attend this time), perhaps when the clocks go forward in a few weeks.

Funnily enough, our resident cockroach left today - U12 Bluebird, though they are beginning to thin out on the roads now.

All 90,a toyotas and Hondas are nigh on indestructible . The peak of automotive reliability

Over here in Sri Lanka, there seem to be thousands of Nissan Sunnys around, known to us British as the Datsun 120Y.  Most of them bodged to fuck and full of newspaper, wire and Glenn Miller but still pootling around merrily.

I had this exact conversation with James Ruppert (Bangernomics/Autocar) earlier this week.

Because of the nature of my job, I absolutely HAVE to get to work each day.  Without fail.  No excuses.  Which is why I do it in a 16 year old Toyota Avensis, and not a new VAG on rent.

JapCrap to me is what shit is to flies.  I love it.
