Cannot be taxed without the VIC being carried out as has already been mentioned. Car not road legal without a VIC being done

Posted

I think we have managed to find the least desirable car.

And it isn't even a Rover.

Oh i wouldn't say that after another couple of lottery draws I will have to pay someone to take the

mg away.

Is anyone actually certain that you can't tax a car that needs a VIC check?

According to gov.uk:

1. Overview
If a car is written off by an insurance company a ‘VIC marker’ (Vehicle Identity Check marker) will be placed against the DVLA record.

If you buy a car that has a VIC marker you will not be able to get a V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) until the car has passed a VIC. This will mean there will be a delay before you can tax the car. Read guidance on buying a used car.

This seems to be stating that you can't get a logbook, not that you can't tax it.

If teh_moog can get hold of the V5 ref number he can find out whether it can be taxed.

A waste of bloody money that's what it is.

The guy looks at your chassis number to see you have the car that matches his piece of paper that's about it

Yep Gary spoke to DVLA today. Needs v62, v10 and MOT cert to get tax. To get that it needs a VIC

Vehicle Identity Check - make sure car isn't a ringer. Being abolished in about 8 weeks. Costs £40 or so

Would be 5pm on a Saturday so MOT test is unlikely to be available.

book it in for monday morning....

you are going to drop it off sat night and put keys through letterbox...

doesn`t sound worth the bother though really...

A friend had to go through all this with a car he bought, luckily, he has a set of trade plates, but the car still had to be VIC'd before he could get a V5 and tax the thing

Posted

Right I'm with you now.

Talk of a V5 upthread made me think there was a V5 or green slip with it.

No tax is £80 fixed penalty + back tax.

IMHO you could easily drive it back without seeing a single police, but I can see why you wouldn't want to risk it.

Posted

Hour or so away I would just chance it. Driving it back over 5 hours round m25 and then m6 not worth it.

Posted

Lots of ANPR cams about on motorways these days, not worth even the remotest risk, esp around the London orbital car park

Posted

i'm convinced you can tax it without VIC, well the titled owner could at least!

Posted

Nope you cannot, because until a VIC is completed, the current V5 is classed as null and void

Posted

There was a bloke offering eighty quid for the bonnet in the previous thread about this car...

I know its a bit defeatist but maybe let the old A-frame/self drive recovery truck/shitley may be worth a try? May even work out cheaper than taxing, insuring, petrol? There's always a way around something.

Wasn't there a mention of AA membership ???

Travel to the car, make sure it won't start and get it recovered home?

Posted

If the AA don't check MOT/MID/Tax status when recovering a car that hasn't been mentioned on their system before, I would be amazed.

I think I'd attempt it but each to their own.   I was given a van last year which hadn't moved for 3 years, got it running and with one day insurance booked an MOTthen moved it via the M3 and M4. Was taking route via a jet wash to remove 4 years of green mould but before it got there it split the rad and spewed all the coolant on the motorway slip road.  AA happily laughed at the non-MOT, non-taxed,  dented, green mould covered van then recovered it all the way home.

Two points.   It was a weekday. daytime and I had the green slip, MOT booking etc.

Some day insurance does not cover a journey to an MOT station on a non-MOTd car.

it all sounds like a massive ballache for naff all reward. I say KRUSH

Agreed.

If it was car of my dreams, closer etc I would but not worth grief.

Would be better off getting dodgytoms pride as does the same job and has more value.

I think cortinadave got denied as recovery last year as his car wasn't taxed . It must depend on the driver .

cheers for that.

So what has happened to the car that has prompted a Vic? How come Swansea suddenly need to verify their records on a 30 year old, £100 pile of shit? Seems an odd priority

Posted

It's because it's been written off cat C. All cat C writeoffs have to be checked.

The VIC check was bought in in the belief it would stop cut and shuts, ringers etc, people buying a write off car for it's ID and applying it to something else.

So that's why all it is is a quick check of the VIN number, and presumably any signs of suspicious "repairs" in that area.

It's so pointless it is being stopped as of a few weeks time.

Anyone want to a one way ticket from Preston to London on Saturday?

Preston NE are playing away at MK Dons on Saturday, the train probably stops at Milton Keynes.

Potential cheap day out for a Preston fan 8)

If this wee puglet can't even be given away does that indicate the future of my mg ?

I think the best thing for this Pug is to James Brown it, it sounds way too much of a ball ache to put it back on the road currently
