Claasic policies for modified cars/no garage and original cars/ no garage?

As is always the way I've left it to the erse end of the days before ye olde Admiral Multicar Policy runs out..

I currently have the 320i e30 BMW on the multi car policy along with 2 moderns.

I dont do too many miles in the 320i and it has 6 years of NCB with protection on it.

Are there any companies that would offer a classic policy for it with its Modifications (30mm suspension drop/uprated dampers). I dont have a garage at home which sometimes sseems to be an issue.

Additionally, given my penchant for purchasing auld scrap at the drop of a hat- who would you reccommend for a classic policy on a car with NO modifications, again with no garage.

the moderns seem simple so I'm not too worried by them but I've never had a classic policy. cheers.

...if its a classic, and you have it insured/are contemplating getting it insured Id just say 'its garaged' as for however many small miles you actually do, its likely to be 'in a garge' getting something or other looked at/fixed/rebuilt/recommissioned/reupholstered /generally fettled/ tinkered with etc etc, so yeah 'its garged most of the time' - getting it out n actually enjoying the thing/putting miles on it, on the open road, less of that in comparsion than the 'in the garage bit' -  so more so in the garage it is, thanks, next question etc...

PBIS were not sniffy about the TR7 lump in the Tolly, they just asked me about the BHP. They did insist about garaging or secure parking though, a few companies will do so, especially in less salubrious areas.

Club membership is helpful but not essential. PBIS - not multi-car orientated but I seem to remember Peter James might be.

Nup wouldnt do that as its obvious no garage is present at home address. I do have locked dtorage at 2 locations, but 1 is miles away and tthe other is already full:)

I tried peter james- they are 300 more than the renewal proposal for the admiral multi car. will try PBIS, cheers

Peter James don't need a garage, but yours isn't a classic classic, in the traditional sense of the word which is what they tend to specialise in. Could be why they are a bit more expensive. Flux also don't need a garage but are usually a bit more expensive and I've heard they can be a bit difficult to claim with. They are also infuriatingly pushy on the phone. I take it the likes of Direct Line etc don't list E30s any more.

Have you tried putting 'retro' car into the online search as opposed to 'classic' car? I've not heard positive things about the company that did a discount for Retro Rides members and cars, but there must be other companies out there now that specialise in the slot between classics like MGBs, E Types etc and moderns.

Have you tried adrian flux? I've had some very reasonable quotes for modified cars and I'm 21 so I expect it will be better still for you.

not yet but I've heard mixed reviews of their service tbh. worth a try I reckon

My tip for the top is to ditch your NCD protection.

You are paying extra for something quite abstract/indefinable/intangible.

If you don't have it & have a bump you'll lose 2 yrs NCD & you will lose 20% discount or thereabouts and then have 4 yrs NCD

With protected, you'll still have 6yrs NCD but your premium will increase by an arbitrary amount.

If you chose to switch companies later, you'll still be declaring the claim whatever policy you have.

So, don't bother with it and save money.

I'd try footman James. They have just come good for me on my 1993 Astra.

That was for parking on the road too.

Another for FJ. They quoted me £88 fully comp for the H reg E36, agreed value £1000* and parked in street.

Adrian Flux are fine if you keep things the same for long periods of time. They get very expensive when you change cars, addresses, work, that sort of thing.  They're also, from what I hear, a bit rubbish in the claim situation when it comes to getting your car sorted but then so are most in the bracket of car you're looking at.   They are generally cheaper than everyone else and I've found their staff are usually really professional and helpful with a minority of bad eggs in the mix.  One nice thing is that they do tend to be very honest and open about problems with a policy and do seem to work to get your price down if it seems abnormally high.

Admiral are quite good too, but can get a bit confused with modified and classics being used as regular cars and can be a bit fussy about garages and the like.

Footman James for unmodified stuff/no garage. They are usually under £100 a policy but cost £25 to make ammendments etc. I have a few cars insured by them and they seem easy enough to deal with on the phone.

Another advantage with FJ is you can combine mileages so if you have a 5000 limit you can spread it between the cars you have insured with them.

I'm with RH for my older ones, which don't have any mods but are in various different places.  They may be worth a try.  Never had to claim, but they've always been helpful on the phone.

I'm not far off 20 - what's a ballpark figure - considering I'd likely be running something '80s (not necessarily modified though)?

Just had a 93 Saab 9000 2.3 turbo on a classic policy with Lancaster , 6000 miles per year and parked on the street in a very naughty area which cost £190 a  year. Flux once did my 190e but when I wanted to stop the policy half way through they wouldn't entertian a refund for the remainder.

try REIS and greenlight - I've been swapping between the two of them for my 1990 imported mx5 for a few years, both very helpful on the phone and prices are decent. not had a claim so can't comment on that side of things.

id suggest footman james got both my cars with them (72 Cortina modified ) (90 range rover standard) not garaged used for commuting not a problem

Being in a garage may not be cheaper on the insurance due to higher risks. Easy to drop stuff from shelves, and easier to steal.

All the usual classic insurers, look on tasteful mods as nothing particularly bad. People of a certain age who do stuff to cars, do it because they want the car, and they want it their way, so tend to look after them, and have less accidents, hence no more expensive often on the insurance.

I have to say that I took the Mx5 off a classic policy and onto a normal one, because it was no more expensive, and now my wife has built up 2 separate no claims bonuses, one for about 30 years and the other for 2 years.

MK1 Cortina with gt spec engine, lowered 2", gt exhaust and alloy wheels - £325 per year.

My 80s cars aren't quite as cheap. My R18 is £450, my 340 is £600 - these aren't classic policies though.

You will probably find it difficult to insure something on a classic policy if you're under 25 and it's not from the 70s or before.

Update on this:

Spoke to Admiral this morning-

Ended up with the Octavia/mods and business use,and the other 2 cars on social only and mods declared Fully comp for £notalot all in.

much happiness. Thanks to you chaps for suggestions- getting some quotes that I could compare against made it a lot easier

sky are worth talking to if modded

fj did renner on a classic policy parked in street

Flux have been bang on with me since 2008. I scraped a £70K Merc and it was sorted within 10 days. No damage to mine, and loaded 10% for 12 months. That's it.

I found them very poor previously-wouldnt do fc on an 'old car' etc.

quite happy with what admiral provided so far-wummin on the blower was really helpful!

Both of mine are fairly well modified.

3.0S Capri's got coilovers, bigger brakes, Leda rear end, and an extra 40bhp than it left the factory with - £350 fully comp 5000 miles, 3 years NCB, parked on driveway with Flux, just needed a proper immobiliser fitting.

1952 Land Rover has some funky suspension and a turbo-nutter engine conversion which more than doubles the original power output, £300 fully comp 3000 miles parked in the road, no NCB, no security at all (doesn't even have door locks) with Classicline who are an absolute pleasure to deal with.
