Diesel Tinkering

Well 57 miles into a tank of asda's finest dinosoar juice has cured the lumpy starts, and I think the idle chatter has died down a bit but not parked next to a wall to have a good listen yet.

So it seems my car likes derv, and fresh veg, but not WVO. Not that that will stop me running it if it's ever offered, can deal with 6 seconds of lumpy idle for the cost saving benefits!

Ticked over 277k this morning as well

I've found a bit of petrol with the veg helps a lot with cold starts. Only a couple of litres to a full tank. That said I've found volkswagens to suffer more on cold veg starts than mercs, might be because idle speed is controlled electronically (I think) on merc OM engines

I don't like thinning veg with petrol in the boring as the engine just doesn't sound right, 80% veg 20% diesel and all is well.

I may have already placed a bid on a merc supercharger.  Need to try and find a 1.9 xud with a blown turbo now and then it's GAME ON!

Right, I've been perusing cams on various XUD engines to find one giving the best duration for air intake this morning (as you do) and have found the Haynes book of lies does have a use after all! In there lies the timings for all the cams fitted.

It seems that the N/A XUD7 has the longest duration cam and the XUD7 turbo has the shortest. The XUD7 N/A also keeps its exhaust valve open for longest after TDC, scavenging would be improved when using the supercharger so the cleanest air possible would be in the cylinders ready for the next firing. Now looking for a N/A XUD7 cam to add to the stockpile for the blower diesel project.

There is another XUD7 N/A I know of around these parts. Still in his 205 at the moment but if I do nick the cam, it'll give him the incentive to SORT HIS BLOODY DYANE OUT!

I'm looking at you Mr racer, sir.

The Mercedes-Benz veggers in the US go mental for Monark nozzles but I can't find a supplier in the UK for the ones I need. The Monark nozzles produce a fine mist while Bosch nozzles can be variable.

I remember an old diesel specialist saying that some Bosch nozzles are Indian-made and Lucas branded stuff is generally better made, and that unbranded is risky.

It's been three weeks.

I assume the XUDKOMPRESSOR is finished?

Nobody's been at the 205's bonnet with a can-opener...

That's what I have in the 1.9TD BX. I fitted it when I changed the engine, so no back to back feel for power. It certainly felt quicker than the Xantia donor, but then again the BX is a lighter car...

You must be the guy I hear the local motor factors moan about ! 😄 what car are they for sir ? A red one !

Yeah I was a bit non-specific there! They're for a Volvo V70 TDi, supposed to help with cold starting on vegetable oil.

many thanks to Dink of this parish for patiently guiding me through remapping the Octavia..

Using free softwear and an obd2 cable (£13.59 delivered) I appear to have managed to get a significan uplift in torque and bhp, and improve drivability whilst maintining good ecomomy.

It is now pushing out circa 140bhp (90 stock) and 225ft/lbs torque (166 stock). I have it mapped to be drivable similar to stock at light throttle pedal angles, then fu'gutty= banzai.

first tank with it done (including some drag racing before mapping) gave 58mpg..

car has gone from 18.009 @ 71.8 to 16.832 @ 81 on ye olde dragstrip.

winning.

the software is intuitaive to use too:)

See those videos on the last page, IIRC he was the first to twincharge a XUD9, and he knows most of what is known about tuning XUDs.

Laquer Peel- Bosch duraterm plugs are the ones to go for.
