A whole thread for 1 bad photo

A photo of a parking lot in the antipodes, by a beach and in 1961.

The idea is for all you youngsters, and those as ancient as me too, to spot what you can. The photo is crap so it won't enlarge properly, but do what you are capable of.

Oh, I was 13 then and might have even been in the crowd in the background but I don't remember !

Is that a pre-war Buick being T-boned by the Beetle?

I can definitely make out the sea.

Right, let's have a go at the first row after the road, left to right:  Dunno, Vauxhall PA Cresta, Morris Oxford, Triumph Herald (Vitesse?), no idea.

I'm not doing very well, am I?

chaseracer: I thought Chev but now maybe Pontiac, Deffo GM from very late 30's. There is a Pontiac hiding there though.

Edit...did some googling and it's a '38 Chev Master

Skizzer : Time to go and learn English (cars), you completely failed to recognise a Hillman and a Vauxhall.

Its all a blur - I've just been to the eye clinic where they put drops in my eyes. :-(

Barrett you win so far, the prize is to sit in the corner of a deserted pub and buy yourself an ale.

DSdriver I thought that eye drops might have improved the photo.

cros the Standard would have been fairly new then, as well as the Vauxhall beside it.

I am wondering if the date 1961 is correct as some cars seem to have black/white plates which were issued to all cars in 1964.

And now to sleep because antipodeszzzzz

Best of both worlds - British chod and Yank chod. It can't get much better.

If that is a Buick, I guess a RHD South African built one?

My eyesight's shot these days. Looks like a load of people flocking to a giant rock cake that's washed up on the beach.

Thanks for that Albert Ross.

That Buick/Chev is bloody huge which makes me think it may be a Buick Eight. I assume locally built as GM had an assembly plant here.

Most likely a convertible Zephyr because of street cred. issues with a Consul.

Yanks, The Buick/chev, another Chev it is about to T bone and to the right a Chev BelAire and Ford Ranchwagon. And over to the left is a Pontiac Parisienne with a white roof.

The MK 1 Jaguar looks tiny in that shot too.

Nice 56 Chevy just above the ford wagon, the mk1 ford is a zephyr due to chrome plated boot handle the early pa looks like a velox and there's another in the bottom right corner.

I see an A35 about to headbutt the herald and a Vauxhall L Type or Wyvern on the right.

Those were the days :-D .  I know that you lot live upside down, but why the spoilers over the front screen?  Do you go faster backwards as well?

I had wondered what happened to my hair. The windscreen mount spoilers are not actually spoilers but are Cosmic/Atomic ray deflectors. They worked well to deflect Atomic fallout from the bombs the Brits and French were setting off in the area. Not everybody believed that Atomic and cosmic fallout was dangerous then, so not every car was so equipped. Most of those idiots are dead now though. As a side effect they also stopped sunburn, something that happens a lot while driving here, especially during the UK winter.

The Bel Air is a '56 210.

Location exactly....Mount Maunganui, at the blowhole. Lots of good fish caught off there. Catch a good Snapper, home in 5 minutes and in the pan cooked with some butter. Dream on that fotorabia !

Is the Vauxhaully thing behind the telegraph pole actually a Holden? I don't know if they were sold in NZ. Behind that is a Mark 1 Jag, and that looks like a Morris Oxford Series MO centre stage. A couple of two-tone Hillman Minx Mk3s and an earlier one grace the middle distance. The van looks like an A55 and the two-tone estate might just possibly be a Standard Vanguard (like the ute)

Those MO Oxfords are painfully lethargic. The 1500 s.v. engine has a lot of weight to haul around. They are capable of seating six and I understand they will cruise all day at 60 MPH, but I dread to think how long it would take to get there. I was seriously considering buying one years ago. Not so much now, but maybe in the future.

Justin Case, the Vauxhally thing is indeed the real Vauxhall, Holden were sold here but don't seem to have been in any numbers before about 1960. The van is Hillman/Commer. If it is the Brown over Beige estate you see, tis actually a Ford Ranchwagon from about 1955.

Squire Dawson, Yep lethargic says it all for the MO, Go for the Morris 6 or Wolseley, they have the OHC 6 engine. The MO was the taxi of choice in their day though, so must have been at least reliable.
