Storage wanted for a car (in Scotland)

Following the arrival of our twin boys last year it's becoming clear to me that the MX5 is not likely to be back on the road for a considerable time and it would be quite handy to have the garage space back (double buggies are quite big and somehow we seem to have accumulated 3 of them - don't ask!)

So I'm looking for somewhere to store the '5 long term. It's currently sorned with no MOT and to be honest I should really just get rid of it but for the money I'd get in it's current condition it's not really worth it and I'd rather hang on to it (it will be a rare classic one day honest...)

I'm not overly bothered by location (within reason) as I don't plan to need access to it regularly but the closer to West Edinburgh the better and as long as it's dry and secure.

Probably a long shot but if anyone has anything or knows of someone who does then let me know!

What's wrong with it? The usual sill / chassis rail welding?

If so, I'd find the money to get it fixed and then flog it. Money spent on storage is essentially dead money unless you particularly want to keep the car, and the car will be deteriorating all the while.

You should speak to the fife based shite collective (FOAD etc) I think they've got some cheap space up there.

JohnF - I know you're probably right and looking at the price of lock-ups around here I'd spend the value of the car on storage in less than a year (or indeed spend enough to get it fixed). That's kind of why I'm hoping to find somewhere for next to nothing.

The car needs the sills doing as well as the chassis rails, and they are 10 a penny at the moment (albeit probably with similar rust problems) therefore it doesn't really make sense to hang on to it - it's just that there's too many times I've regretted getting rid of a car for the want of space.

Just putting the feelers out really in case something comes up.

Oof!

The mate's rate down here is £40 per month for a barn with four cars under cover.

Cheers for that FOAD I'll keep that in mind but to be perfectly honest for it to make even slight financial sense for me I'd be looking at an indoor space for (close to) outdoor prices bearing in mind that I'd be looking to lay it up for at least a year but equally I understand that it's got to make financial sense for you too!

I assume that your storage is in or near Dunfermline which would be good location wise...

I have storage all over the place and believe me you won't find much cheaper than 15 a week.

One of the sheds I rent is a tenner a week and it's on the verge of collapse.

Yep, the storage costs are likely to cost more than the repairs then. If i were you I'd repair the car, get it a fresh MOT and sell it at the start of summer when the market is good for convertibles.

You'll probably get your repairs money back, late-ish MX5s with a fresh MOT seem to fetch two or three times as much as one needing welding (depending on overall condition). And they're not exactly rare, so you should be able to find another one easily enough when your circumstances have changed.

That's sensible advice - however this is Autoshite!

Cooncil lock ups in fife are £30 a month. If you're not that arsed as to location you should get one.

That's more like a price I could live with - will look into it.

  • Fix it and raffle it. Quite fancy a convertible this year.

OK. How about outdoor space + shipping container that you can use year after year and sell on at the end?

Consideration needs to be given re having acces to work benches/ramps/elec / water etc..

Not summat you get with a cooncil lockup, but lovely to have if you want to work on a car
