If it all turns to shit these things break quite well, non rusty rear estate doors are always wanted, the dash etc if it’s not too cracked.

For what it's worth in the video through my phone speakers that sounds clattery, I would hesitate to go any further than that as sound often doesn't record well and things are picked up differently to how they sound in real life.

From memory but I think if you have access to a DTI then setting the pump timing accurately pays big dividends, or allows you to retard it a fraction to quieten it off.

Does it idle smoothly enough? it's hard to tell with the exhaust noise but at the start it almost seemed to be running on 3 at times.

Don't the diesel type 9 boxes have a longer 5th gear too?

Having heard the difference it made to the XUD in a mate's 306 when the timing was fractionally off, it's worth checking that before worrying too much.

Doesn't sound that massively bad to me, but that's only based on what I've heard through phone speakers.

Pull all the plastidip crap off and give it a good service and you've probably quadrupled your money...

Much better with that plastidip removed! And the engine sounds simply divine.

Winning wagon.

Re the back bumper, I walked round town hill loch last year and there was a Sierra outside a house there that was returning to nature. I’m sure it was an estate, might yield a bumper. If that’s any interest to you, let me know and I’ll find it on google maps for you when I’m not posting from my phone.

I know exactly where it is!

Shouldn't be that loud.

A co worker a few years back had one of these, and it was a lot more quiet that that one is.

What's it like warmed up?

It doesn't have an exhaust fitted so is extra loud. I've only driven it up and down the road a couple of times so don't know if it quietens when fully warmed up.

Have you made enquiries or is the owner liable to shoot you on site?

I'd always assumed that for a car to have sat for so long in the same place that it was unlikely to ever be for sale. I haven't inquired about it yet.

Here's another video

Fast forward it to 3:30ish to hear it with the bonnet open.

That sounds like the one we had that had picked up on a piston. If it's got a test just run it and see what happens.

Posted

I think it certainly sounds a bit knocky but could be sounds picked up by the camera. Quite a late 2.3 at that.

Indenor what it should sound like.

I had an ex taxi one back in the day and that has brought back some memories for me! Sounds exactly mine did, hear one coming and turn round expecting to see a massey ferguson.

Run it till test expires then either cash in from some fool on eBay that’ll pay through the nose or whip the diff out and the saleable bits and frag rest.

It wasn't too bad really, it drove fine but had a few warning lights including brakes, engine management and abs/traction control. The rear arches were a little bit crusty.

Why did I swap it for a horrendous looking Sierra? Because I could!

I wanted a Sierra more, I don't buy or keep cars to please random people on the internet, I'm sure over the years many people have been shouting at their screens "You fucking stupid cunt" "Why did you swap that for this?" etc etc but I've really just got to please myself.

The Hyundai could have been a great car but it did nothing for me, I only bought it because it was cheap and that age of car scares me with engine management lights, I see them as a potential liability and money pit so it's best sticking to older cars.

If I'm going to have a big thirsty barge I want an LS400.

Wasn't judging your decision, I was just curious. :)

Looking good! That replacement numberplate is pretty cool too, ironically better then the original which was pointlessly taken off it.

Do you think a toffee/ caramel wheel would work? I use one for removing old vinyl decals and badge residue.

Posted

I'd try a hot air paint stripper on it, applied gently it should lift the paint easily.

Possibly, I'm willing to give anything a try because it's taking ages the way I have been removing it so far.

The paint underneath is has been brush painted on so after I remove the black I'll need to try thinners on the white. I think the wins and bonnet have been replaced and were originally red. I think I will probably end up respraying it in the spring when it starts to get a bit warmer.

I managed to get the original exhaust welded back onto the car which has made the overall driving experience much more bearable, I also filled the tank with diesel which seemed to quieten down the sound of the engine, I think someone might have tried running it on veg before me.

We had a P100 version of this. Sounded the same until the injection timing was set right. Was slow as F until then also.

What killed it was being reversed into by a fuel truck and put the front suspension all out of line.

Looks better for being un-painted.
