Ive  not had either Imp fail , the Singer since 1988 ( failed the first one the year i bought it though ) or the Van since 1991 ( this has never failed since i bought it )

Other shite has though .Beemer on a strut bearing / bush thingy and a brake flexi or two , Both my old Audis fail every year on various bits although both had over 200,000 thou on the clock by this time.

I guess its all down to maintenance , care and keeping a beedy eye on things ( or not as the case may be ) .

I can fix Imps without even thinking too hard and maybe thats the key

My MR2 has had advisories on minor things that are then not advised on again at all even several years later. Sometimes they point out corrosion and other times they don't. Same with rear wheel bearing play. I think a lot of it depends on how thorough they are feeling on the day.

The GTE, Has passed every MOT first time since its 2011 Rebuild, I Generally look over anything I'm sending in for a test thoroughly beforehand so the Majority pass first time, The last failiure was on the blue rebel estate (long sold) which failed on a leaf spring hanger bush, handbrake effectiveness, brake balance and an assortment of other things....

I've recently started using a new test station which haven't yet got fed up with my rubbish plastic cars... We'll see what they make of the crossflow rebel when it goes for its second test in may!

I thought it was accepted practice that (partial) retests within 10 (or however many) days were free. It says as much on the fail sheet usually.

Charging for a partial retest is a cunts trick.  I would go somewhere else man.

Edit* Sorry, I read it wrong. That seems only to apply if you leave the car for work.

Still calling cunt on it though.

That's shameless cunt padding there Barry...

I can't remember the last time I had an MOT fail first time, must have been years ago. Although an MOT fail sheet isn't necessarily a bad thing, it gives you an itemised list of jobs to do.

My Old Fozzer passed last week. I was that chuffed I didnt kick the cat when I got home

Have had very few failures but always go over car thoroughly before taking it for test. Modern cars more difficult though. Best thing that happened for me was end of tests for pre 60's cars, so I've now only one 70's car that needs a ticket.
I tend to keep a closer eye on old cars anyway regardless of MOT or not. With no dual circuit brakes the choice is keep them up to scratch or go to hospital. Was a bit shocked when a friends Toyota 4x4 lost its brakes due to corrosion in a brakepipe that runs under the fuel tank and gets missed in the test. Someone on this forum also mentioned Landrover dealer fix of body- off to mend corroded pipe. Holy snapping arseholes.

I often wonder what would happen if car owners had an operators licence type arrangement and got points etc for mot fails like lorry operators do .

It should improve vehicle conditions in theory .[/quot

I've had two vehicles needing HGV tests and I loathed the process. Getting an old commercial through when its brakes could barely meet the standard required when new was no fun if you got someone officious. Attitudes did get better but the torture got worse. The first time I encountered the device that shakes the front axle to test for play in the steering was particularly traumatic. The machine is designed to give a modern 8 wheeler a good workout, so sitting in the drivers seat of a 5 ton 1960's mobile shop with all the stock raining down off the shelves was a nightmare. When I had an operators licence the 8 weekly inspections were an unwelcome expense on a vehicle that covered only a few hundred miles a month.

Prostitutes can service any number of clients without any requirement for an MOT so I suggest monthly minge examinations would be fair -after all they earn more than I ever did.

Any MOT failures I've had over the years have usually been for stuff I was aware of,but thought I'd get away with or tried to convince myself wasn't that bad. Very often this theory has worked ,especially with Solihul products .

Far worse than an MOT is the 6 monthly Council Test on my work cars. In the past I've taken cars for a strict ( you all know what I mean) MOT ,passed with no advises, then the same day the bastards at the Council have failed them . Usually on steering or suspension parts. My Chrysler 300 got a fail on worn front shocks, there was nothing wrong with them - I spent a couple of hours cleaning and polishing the struts, wiped dirt off various nuts and bolts ,then took it back. Tester made cursory glance under arches then passed it.

I once got a fail for not having enough safety pins in the first aid kit and my current BMW has got an advise for a dent in the front wing, along with a caution that it will fail next time - there is no dent in either front wing. I didn't question it as next time it'll be the first thing they check and see I've repaired* it.

These robbing bastards charge £140 every 6 months , which is on top of the annual £320 operators license and £250 every 3 years for my PH license. No doubt as more local authority cuts come in these charges will increase.

No wonder most local authorities are against VOSA or whatever taking over Taxi licensing on a national scale,

The F passed first time, which surprised me. It came with 8 weeks ticket but the tyres were badly cracked, speedo wasn't working and a few other bits I put right but I hadn't really been under it for a good look. Chuffed to fuck when I collected it.

As for the Galaxie, it's a '59 model year so it's exempt. Fuck 'em, clean the glass and motor on. I don't make the rules.

I've been aware the work wants doing but I've not done it yet on the basis I wouldn't spend 3 hours putting a new bearing in on a car that could potentially fail on another uneconomic problem.

What makes you believe vehicle conditions are generally bad enough to justify any action required to improve it?

As long as the MoT passes those self-made trikes and fails cars because one washer jet is clogged up, the entire thing has nothing but comedy value anyway.

And I've got better things to spend my money on than a luke warm joke.

Edit: I just got a phonecall from the garage that the Rover passed first try.

This should be proof enough that the entire MoT thing is nonsensical and should be kicked to where the tax disc went.

My H reg Volvo 740 has passed 2 MoTs in a row first time with no advisories

My only first time pass on an older car was one I'd driven straight out of a breakers yard, Cat D, straight into an MOT station. Audi 90 Quattro Sport.

Initially he was going to fail it on jagged metal on the tops of the front arches, where they always go. But he was next door to a car spares shop and wasn't busy, so let me nip and get some filler - bashed the metal back in with a brick, smoothed a bit of filler over with a Tesco loyalty card, pass.

I used to take all my cars to a garage down the road, but, they were renowned as absolute arseholes for failing stuff that never should fail, but I fancied the pants off a lass that worked there and used the hour and a bit they used to take to chat to her.

If ever anything was to obviously a blatant attempt at ripping the piss, I'd have a quick word with the boss, he'd come in and tell them to behave!

When she left, I never used them again!

Now I own a little bit of that garage, and the girl is my wife so it was worth it.

Yes, my Citroën Xantia, every time for the last 6 years. Wait for it though... the next test is on Wednesday; after typing this I bet it fails....

It failed! Both wishbones and bushes need changing, as do the track rod ends (oh, and the front indicators have lost their "amberness," but that's easy!)

It could be worse and I can do it all in a few days, but Good Friday and the Easter Monday bank holiday get in the way-bummer!

My local MOT station fails the handbrake religiously on every car I've had that's gone there. I think the fella that does the test has a thing for them.

Victory!!

MOT pass for Toledo today and not so much as a single advisory. For an eleven year old car thats still clocking up 12k a year I'm pretty chuffed with that.

If you have even a passing interest in the system, the official MOT blog is quite interesting. Particularly enlightening is the article on advisories:

Evidence shows that in many cases testable advisories have become overused, sometimes with the same advisory being used year after year. We may be partly responsible for this due to the wording of some advisories; such as a component ‘slightly worn’ or ‘slightly corroded’.

we have seen many examples of incorrect, misleading and even abusive advisories being issued.

They also post fun photos of defects testers have sent in, like this cut seatbelt rejoined with safety pins and then stuffed under the seat squab. Oh, and an article about tester training illustrated with this excellent picture:

my F. But only after I changed the tyres and speedo cable

The Triumphs always fail on the handbrake not being up to spec, I really need to learn how to adjust the "automatic" adjusters... Also failed on a chipped windscreen, headlight alignment and the 1300 once failed the emissions test, so I tweaked the tuning to run lean for a bit...

That's a fascinating site, the horror stories are pretty amazing.

This is a particular favourite;

Pleased to announce my current Rover 75 (not really shite as it's in super condition with <60k on) flew through the MOT today. No advisories.

That MOT blog is pretty good, loved the Landcruiser with a wood screw in place of a balljoint nut, and the MG with a piece of fresh green tree branch wedging a strut top to stop it knocking.

Any part of the rodent between pad and disc would surely have been worn away, so that can't impair braking.

I can imagine the smell going down a long twisty hill though

Just done all the work & picked up my pass certificate at 10 minutes to 5, on the day before the Easter break-phew! Those Citroën ball joints are nasty, requiring a strange castellated socket to remove them, which I didn't have, so with the aid of a cold chisel I managed to shift 'em!

I DOES drive much better now!

My vectra has just passed it's MOT.
