Speculate to accumulate or money down the drain?

Is it financially better to sell this as it is or spend a bit on it hoping to get back MORE than I just spent?

55k ish 60319 miles, always been Toyota serviced. Service and MOT are due in June. It needs a pair of rear tyres now.

Toyota service, MOT and tyres will be about £350.

What to do?

Summer is a-coming but there's no shortage of them, so I imagine one with issues might be tricky to sell for decent coin. I R NOT EXPURT on new things though. Or financial matters.

You know that asking us for the best financial decision on a newish car isn't absolutely playing to our strengths?

My guess is to put some matched, decent make, part worn tyres on.  Get a service but not by Toyota.  Pay the money saved on the tyres for the best valet, clay bar and intensive interior hoovering you can find.

MOT, no service, budget tyres, sell.

Easier to sell.

MOT, no service, budget tyres, sell offload.

It's 2005 so a Toyota Service won't enhance it's value a great deal, even if it's always been done there until now, so just get an oil and filter at an independent garage if you want to maintain a stamped up history. Source the net for some budget tyres, and shop about for MOT prices. I bet you'll save over £100 and get to enjoy her over the summer.

re tyres, check out tyreleader.co.uk (as recommended to me by GordonBennet) for some mega-cheap but half decent boots

Sell. My opinion, I don't see the mk3 being as coveted as the Mk1 and turbos.

Wouldn't bother servicing it if you are selling it. 50% of people might ask if its been serviced recently at which point you will lie, the rest will most likely be concerned only if the radio works and what colour it is.

Ta for sharing the wisdom gents.

M.O.    We buy any shite.com have quoted £2130 but they are assuming at least half an mot and would probably knock a bit off for the patch on the roof and maybe for no rear badges. (I don't like badges) Autotrader ads seem to be £3.5K ish. I reckon I can hope to get £3k for it with a bit of effort but I am a lazy sod so £2.5k would do.

I heard (On autoshite I think)  that Yokahama designed a tyre specially for the MR2, due to it being mid engine so fitting budget tyres might be immmmoral.

Go into the dealership. Spot the YT apprentice. Wait outside till lunchtime till he comes out. Offer him £20 to stamp your service book. Job done

I would put some mid range tyres on, get it MOT'd then sell.

(I had a mate nick me a Nissan main dealer stamp once. Lovely collectors* item.)

Buy. Clean up. Tyres. MOT and maybe Service. Sell. Laugh whilst depositing money in bank.

WIll many people looking for a mk3, be prepared to pay 2-3 times the price for the same car that is around 5 years younger?

IMO, the mk3 appeals now because of how cheap they can be had - unborked, I mean,

That said, I know very little about them.

When I was briefly looking into them (for 3SGTE conversion), I was looking at sub £800, non-running examples.

At least yours is the right colour, and the roof goes down, the price goes up! #Summer

I vote stick a test and some part-worns on and flog it.

You should only spend money on it if you are hoping to look more appealing than other MR2s on sale at the same time. I'd spend the minimum amount on it. The new buyer won't car if those 'new tyres' are Michelin or WangDung VergeSeekers.

I've heard they are really good cars

Personally would spend the £350 maintaining the service history. Thankfully don't have any main dealer serviced cars in the fleet

MoT, parts-worns and a couple of goes at your local latviancarwash.com

I would get it looking OK and MoT'd. Frankly proper money spent is just wasted, unless it makes the car easier to sell over local competition. On the MR deux it will make no difference whatsoever, so looking the biz and with decent part worns and a full MoT, that should be your lot.

I bought this for 1400 last August and sold it for 1600 when I realised it drank oil at an alarming rate.

It had full toyota history. You can pick um very cheap, and this one sold very easily somone payed me a deposit of 40 quid just to be the first to see it, he then bought it for his missus.

I think the later ones like yours have improved oil control rings so are pretty good motors, stupid pre cats aside.

I know its It's best to be detached when viewing what and if money should be spent but I'm not very good at that- which is probably why I rarely make money on motors, but for me it will always be a hobby rather than a way of making a bit of cash. I do like to sort niggles and whilst using/ improving as I go so I'm probably a good person to buy off!

Well after all that, I have taken WBAC's offer.

Like putting it in an auction really, but even less effort. I guess a few blokes in the trade will make a few quid out of my idleness, but good luck to them!
