How often do you use your shite?

Mrs foad has claimed the Volvo 360 as hers so I rarely drive it, she also uses the jumbuck as she's insured on it. My daily driver is the proton mpi. The 900 needs some issues sorted before I can use it on the road, the alfa sprint has no keys, the fso is fucked and will never see the road. I've given the camry to my parents but still probably use it more than they do.

15 miles each way commuting, a mix of heavy city traffic, dual carriageway and single track lanes in equal amounts. Then some domestic use at the weekend but generally my wife's car is used for familial outings.

Monday to Friday, 5 days a week. Don't think much of it tbh, it's never gone wrong (yet)

Honda ? Normally Monday and Friday 120 miles each. Tuesday to Thursday, I try to cycle on my 1989 shite cycle. I try not to use said Honda at weekends but in the last 4 weeks I've done 1500 plus miles. This week, I drove to Derby and back on Monday, drove back the derby on Tuesday, drove to Leicester today and back to derby, and I'll cycle tomorrow and back home to Formby Friday.  I know we will go in Honda to the Lowry on Saturday night to the theatre.  So that will be at least 550 miles this week.

MINI.  on the drive. gets used most days by the wife. but only did 10K miles in the last 2 years.

Mx5 comes out when sunny, and only if it's a Sunday. 1200 miles last year.

Irregularly. Although all the shite I've owned has been used all year round, rain or shine. I occasionally use them for work; customers tend to remember a bewiskered pipe smoker in a forgotten 70s plodder.

Obviously I can't rely on a single old motor to get me to and from work everyday, so having a second slice of 1970s BL is justifiable, right?

I think it's quite sensible really! Especially if you have to rely on it. Like I said a few posts back, it just takes the pressure off having to keep the one car running and roadworthy all the time, especially if it needs a bit more than the usual maintenance.

I use whatever is handy. The BX is lovely on the long trips, but a wee bit underpowered on the hills. I put the aircon on yesterday to give it a spin and it was like putting the handbrake on ! Nice and cold though. Mazda is good on the hilly bits but not so smooth riding.

All my motors are shit so all the time. The Vectra is my usual run about for all kinds of journeys, but I've used the Cavalier every day bar one so far, including coming to work and it's great. In fact, it's ideally suited to commuting and whatnot.

The MGF is my daily hack, and is coping with a 56 mile round trip every day with relative ease. Fitting a stereo has helped enormously and I'm looking forward to payday and getting my suspension pumped up.

While it might not be the turbo diesel saloon I should probably have bought, it's certainly a laugh

However, when En-ger-land are playing a big match I tend to slip out in one of my cars when everyone else is in the pub or watching it on telly. As the roads are empty I can have a good hoon around with little or no interuption and when I do come across another car, as there is little other traffic I can overtake easily.

Hold on there, never in a Visa 10E you need the power of a 17D for that!

The pool ready to use changes during the year, firstly for the weather and to let others have some exercise.

This winter the pool has been:

1996 Citroen ZX turbo diesel estate

1988 BMW 735iSE

1999 Citroen Xantia V6 Exclusive

1999 Volvo V70T5

2001 Volvo V70 XC

1990 Mercedes 200TE

2004 Range Rover TD6 Vogue

1995 Audi V6 Convertible

Recently joined by Citroen C15 D van and shortly to be joined by my second Citroen Visa 17RD. My 1972 MGB GT has recently been bought home and my wife’s 2000 BMW 330Ci put into storage.

My wife likes to use one car for work her Volvo V70 T5 but is doing quite a lot of miles at the moment so does turn about with the Mercedes 200TE and the other Volvo V70. Me I try to keep the remainder of the “In Use Pool†exercised so use the cars in turn. Although which car to use usually answers itself by things like convertible sunny day, need load space, needing smaller car for parking in a car park, need a tow bar, feeling hard up which has best mpg, and what can I get at without moving other cars first!

If you don't mind me asking how do you manage taxing them and insurance? Do you have to keep swapping it round or are they all road legal? You must spend a lot of time at the MOT garage too?

I will cash the tax in on some of the cars and bring out others that need taxing instead, plus some of are cars are free tax. Insurance I have a Classic multiple car policy, fleet policy and my wife has one she likes to keep up her NCB on. MOTs I use two garages plus marque specialists from time to time and my favorite garage always has something of mine and I just swap them over when they are ready, I never push them because I get some free storage, which is another problem I have but they did read me the riot act when I had 3 cars in their yard!

Ahh, multi car policies. That makes sense. I suppose with the new tax rules you can pay monthly too which might help. I bet your fleet works out cheaper than running a couple of newer cars when you take depreciation and complexity into account.

I must have a look round to see what's available road tax free now but I'd assume they command a premium. My dad always had triumphs so always liked them but the rust puts me off a bit. I'm better at mechanics rather than bodywork and I'm pretty amateur at that! Only another 12 years and my MR2 will be free to tax...

Am I the only one here who uses a Lancia every day?

Or failing that, an Alfa.

That sounds familiar!

Back in 2009 we had a Alfa 156 in regular use but Lancia was 2000 when we ran a HPE 2.0 carb.

Dailly 4 Lyf.

What ever I'm running, it gets 150 miles a week at least.

I get worried if I havnt started something up for a few days.

Bought an Alfa 166 a year ago and tbh it's a bit too modern for me. The most modern of all the others is 23 years old.

Currently no Lancia but we still have a 1983 Giulietta 2.0 saloon that needs some work. We also have a Maserati 425 Biturbo saloon which is in good working order just stored to keep it from the salt of winter.

All the bloody time. Never owned a modern car, and never plan to either.

The Cherry is my daily drive but that isn't generally very far.  If one of the cars is off the road for a few days it's not really a problem as we just swap errands round so I can cycle or I borrow something from work.  When I finally get one of the old ones back on the road it will get used once or twice a week instead.

Sorry but my wife wants to know where the name Catsinthewelder comes from?

I only drive shite, and cover at least 200 miles a week, mostly in the 18 but when it's broken (this happens frequently) I alternate between the polo/340.
