dugong Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 They're under priced because of that tepid Longbridge underdog glow beloved by aficionados. There's also the Pistonheads pub expert mentality that shouts 'MX-5' whenever the subject of cheap open-topped cars is raised. Die-hards knock the 'F for being Metro derived. yet the MX-5 MkI gets away with running a reworked B2200 pick-up truck gearbox and an engine from a contemporary 323. It also has the grim cloud of potential K-Series misery depressing values - although that has never hurt the S1 Lotus Elise. Ks are far better suited to being thrashed about in the middle of an 'F or an Elise than they ever were plodding to the shops in the nose of an R8 or HHR, barely nudging 40mph and never getting properly warmed up. I personally would have vetoed a race engine signed off by accountants but I was six in 1989 and the Rover Grouip wouldn't have listened to me anyway. In all honesty, MX-5s are better cars overall, probably because Mazda were less ambitious in what it set out to do; spending its research and development funds on bringing the traditional sports car into the modern age. They are horribly bland and standard, though. Spending a couple of k really transforms them, especially if better suspension is fitted. That's the joy of the Mazda - it's an excellent base for modification. The same £1000 that would buy an iffy Roadster or MX-5 would buy a stunning standard MGF VVC that would comprehensively outgun it without any expensive rectification work. I struggled to see the appeal of MX-5s for years because I'd only driven rusting, thrashed heaps that had never seen a service bay their entire lives. Shortly before my accident I was lucky enough to get behind the wheel of a BBR turbo MkI - and realised what I'd been missing out on. You can certainly get more for your money from an MGF, it's just that the model is going through an odd period of merely being 'old' rather than classic (despite the fact that it will shortly celebrate its 20th anniversary). The TF also has a lot to answer for, being disproportionately over-priced in comparison to their earlier brethren. HMC, Taff and dome 3
dollywobbler Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 That and the fact that if you jump into an MGF straight from an MX-5, the interior plastics feel like something Kinder Price would reject. I mean the sunvisors are hilariously pathetic! Mind you, they are good fun if you ignore that triviality. Love the sound of an eager K-Series.

Yes, because an MX-5 dashboard is a model of class, quality and sophistication. They're both bollocks, let's face it. The plastics in my VVC are no worse than any of the French stuff beloved by beards and Autoshite (which admittedly isn't saying much). dollywobbler 1
xtriple Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Never had an 'F' as the 'B' I had put me off anything MG for life. But, I quite like the look of them and they are supposed to be fun to chuck around just that there doesn't seem to be many (any?) autos so I doubt I'll ever have one. Still looking for another MX5 auto though and they seem to be thin on the ground as well.
dollywobbler Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Autos are about - the curious Steptronic CVT system. Probably more like to find an MX-5 auto, especially if you look for grey Eunos imports.
Station Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 I don't know how anyone can criticise the interiors of these cars. It's like going to Cuba and pointing and laughing at all the poor people over there. What else are you going to put on a convertible's window frame - a hand crafted louvre, using 50% of the car's meagre production budget? It was a cheap car that sold a shit load.I found the whole interior (apart from the sunvisors!) quite solid, probably because it was made of that really thick foam stuff. I never had any problems with it (until I had to take things off more than a few times - it didn't like that) Quite chuffed it's a 100% British car and proud it came from the UK. eddyramrod 1
dollywobbler Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Ok. Maybe it's just the sunvisors then. They really do stick in my mind!
Cavcraft Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Keep on knocking it lads, I'm going in with a firm £250 offer at 11.00pm today! Taff 1
Pillock Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Working sunvisors with the little extension bits are apparently rare.
overrun Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Agreed on interior plastics being shit in most things, up until maybe the last decade.A mate of mine once knocked back a Starlet SR for being 'too plasticy'. What else do you expect, and really, who fucking cares? I'm sure you'll find a loving owner for this soon, station!
Fat_Pirate Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I've been trying to sell this to everyone I know 'cos it looks brilliant for so little money, but PROCRASTINATION abounds. It's cheap, it's fun, and if it goes badly wrong it'll scrap for £100. I'd buy it myself, but I already have a mk1 MX5.
overrun Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Do these break for decent money? This one seems better than that fate, but just wondering.
Pillock Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 They do, but that would be a real shame. overrun and Barry Cade 2

Taff Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Do these break for decent money? This one seems better than that fate, but just wondering. fuckin' hell, if it comes to that it's going on my credit card. I can't wait ti get mine into regular use, and it's nowhere near as tidy as this red one. Someone get it bought, ffs
Jim Bell Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I would buy it if it was a VVC, even though I had to sell the last one. Just because this is such a Billy Bargain.
Inspector Morose Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 NOTHING TO SEE HERE. KEEP MOVING. MOVE ALONG PLEASE.
Pillock Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 If it comes down that low, I'll have it and then look out for a white one to make some weird Italian Hairdresser Job film.
purplebargeken Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 The VVC jobbie only really kicks in around 4K. The MPi is just as much fun. Chuck on a 52mm throttle body and a filter and have some fun. The MPi is just as much fun in the real world. I'd buy this just for the hell of it. I can't though, cos I has broke.
New POD Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 It's always a good week when you see at least 2 cars on Autoshite, that you would just buy without thinking, if you didn't already have too many cars. Skizzer, purplebargeken, dollywobbler and 2 others 5
purplebargeken Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Must not even think about buying, think arthritis, think pain, think just how nice that looks in red. Doh!
Barry Cade Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Working sunvisors with the little extension bits are apparently rare.Took me weeks (and weeks) to find the ones in the blue one, then lucked out as a silver VVC was delivered to u pull it with 2 perfect ones, and a windbreak just as I was leaving in a huff. Finished the X1/9 today ready for taxing at the beginning of March. Two two seaters would be a bit greedy and hard to justify to the wife, otherwise I think this one would be coming North. An MGF feels like a real, proper car after an X1/9... Pillock, Taff and eddyramrod 3
Taff Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 It's always a good week when you see at least 2 cars on Autoshite, that you would just buy without thinking, if you didn't already have too many cars. I've arrived at the conclusion that the only thing better than a cheap MGF is two cheap MGFs. From a distance they would look like big metal shoes for me Must not even think about buying, think arthritis, think pain, think just how nice that looks in red. Doh! steady, tiger! An MGF feels like a real, proper car after an X1/9... Now then, get it bought under the pretext of writing a long term comparison article for Practically Clapped-out magazine. Was it you that was after a bike rack for an X1/9? I was going to try mine of the MGF and see if it fits, is that even remotely helpful for you?
Inspector Morose Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 The MGF seems to be the Autoshite Citroen BX of the moment.
Barry Cade Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Now then, get it bought under the pretext of writing a long term comparison article for Practically Clapped-out magazine. Was it you that was after a bike rack for an X1/9? I was going to try mine of the MGF and see if it fits, is that even remotely helpful for you? Not me- by what I've seen on here MGF's are cheaper than bikes, and I'd be far less likely to blow a gasket on an MGF than a pushbike. Taff 1
New POD Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I have come to the conclusion, that I should sell the Honda, buy a petrol cab crew pick up with LPG conversion, for practicality and occasional use when I need more seats, perhaps making it a tax deductible pool van owned by the business, and then run a succession of interesting Sub £500 almost shitters, like this that would be more fun. Perhaps I should just use the Mx5 more.
HillmanImp Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 How is this still for sale? Its well fit. Don't recall ever seeing one in that colour. I did think about buying it for the birds birthday last week but sadly she would see through my shitty plan to buy it for myself, just like she realised I bought her some flowers for valentines day on Sunday instead of Saturday so I could get them at half price. 'Look, there is no reason buying them today, we are decorating. They would just get paint all over them. I will get you some really nice ones tomorrow.'
Pillock Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Location?Re: Location!I left a clue, but none of you spotted it. The third photo has a Wirral 0151 number on the blue sign! For that, I hide something horrible in car if you buy it.
Taff Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Location is everything, dahling sorted, no need to thank me
