No, it had a fuel leak this morning when it was dislodged from its garage. The fuel pipe union to the carb was loose and nip solved the problem but I don't understand why sitting there for a few days should cause it to leak.

That is oil that escapes at will!

Maybe it felt like a change from leaking oil, cars get bored too you know :)

You are as bad as Mrs6C she thinks cars have feeling too!

The reveal is simply a friend has bought over his Spitfire 1500 to change the broken rear spring and whining diff.

It's self cleaning, they leak petrol to wash the oil leak off.

Progress has been good and nothing we were not expecting.

When I say we, I mean Tom the owner is laying on his back with me making coffee and dispensing the odd word of wisdom that comes with mending Triumphs for nearly 40 years!

Cars do have feelings, I can't look my old one in what's left of its face anymore as it's crying. It thought it was a normal day, then it never drove on the road again

On the subject of cars having feelings, if I was a back axle I expect I would whine if I was being used with a broken spring :)

It also has a lot of backlash but only on the drivers side?

Turns out the spring is not broken just saggy and when the car was on stands on the chassis  you could wriggle the end of the spring where it is bolted though the upright and rattle it.

The Spitfire has progressed well and is mostly back together.

I remember when I was a kid my Dad and his mate changing the rear spring on Reg's Vitesse before he chopped it in on a Renner 16TL.  The seven-year-old me may have learned a few words that day!

I have been to see my friend today who is rebuilding his Riley Elf that his Grandad bought new and has always been in the family.

There is a round plastic dome with 4 more modern wires to it that we cannot identify, anybody know?

I can't see what the other end of the wires are attached to, but my first thought on something that size is a voltage regulator for the alternator output.

Posted

Bit small for a voltage reg though, in pic 2 there's a voltage reg behind and above it. Looks a bit more like a headlight, spotlight or horn relay to me.

I'd be identifying the live, disconnecting it and see what stops working.

The wires are not attached to anything at the moment. The car has always had a dynamo, which has its regulator on the same side as the mystery object.

Cables look too thick for a horn relay. The removable lid is throwing me a bit. Maybe starter relay? Where do the wires go?

Posted

Some pictures of the writing on the lid would be helpful too.

The cables don't look at all original to me. The removable lid wouldn't be that unusual on a period relay, it allowed you to access and clean up the contacts with a bit of emery paper.

Bearing in mind the Riley was the sporting option, I wonder if it was factory wired for driving lamps?

Posted

Aftermarket hazard flasher relay would also make sense.

Do not trust it - it says "Made in France" on it!

Aye I'd be tracing the wires back to see where they go too.

Along with not trusting frogs.

typed really long post about a similar one on the inner wing of my Trump2000 - but no help whatsoever so won't waste more of your time..... carry on.

(Of course I'd be interested to find out what it is - although the 2000 is long gone)

what's written on the cap?

Wires look pretty heavy duty - three wires suggest a voltage regulator.
