Six Cylinders Motoring Notes

I can do the 3rd or the 17th. If a few others are popping down I'm good with whichever day most can attended.

I mean,Who wouldn't want to get their hands on the rear end of a saucy Italian on a Sunday?

Lets say the 17th March and that way it gives a bit more notice for those wishing to come along.

If I wasn't 500+ miles away from you, I'd be well up for this!

Good luck to all concerned!

Scotoshite/ASMM redux will be on the way to Dover for the Pre-Br*x*t Tour of Euroshite - mebbe we'll be able to swing by...

Eeek! Need to field some nice sharp, thin chisels as well... the idea is to break away the friction material from the rear brake pads so that the rear disks will be free to turn, without damaging the pad backplates or the calipers or their likely-to-be-very-fragile winding mechanisms... that lot can then get some attention once removed from the car...

Everything on the rear made of unobtainium?

What's the details on this fine steed?

Reg number etc,

I'll have a look on the system at work tomorow and see what is and isn't available. May at least be able to get some part numbers.

It is a 1983 Alfa Giulietta 2.0- KKX 117Y

I assume it's not possible to unbolt the calipers or disks without first convinving the pads out?

In theory I should be available and so long as my back isn't having a bad day I should be able to help out with the grovelling around hitting things with hammers bit. Especially if someone else can help keep tabs on where the tools are. My total inability to keep track of anything for more than ten seconds is my biggest headache!

Hmm...wonder if TP might be ready for this...

Got any photos of the braking setup in question so I could have a think to see if I can come up with any brainwaves?

I seem to remember that the last time I changed the rear calipers on one of these, the transaxle had to be disconnected, lowered and supported on axle stands to enable access to the relevant fixings. It was 20 years ago though, so there may have been other reasons for that, which I've forgotten...

Inboard brake discs. Lovely. The K70 and Ro80 had those.

I have put up the pictures from the Haynes manual for interest, not because I am expecting anybody to fix it for me. The help I am asking for is to get it ready to transport and I have already agreed in principle with Andy at Alfa Specialists Northampton that he will do the work.

Oh and make it look as presentable as we can because it is 20 years since Andy saw the car and it may have looked a bit better then!

I can imagine Andy's face falling through the floor and himself invoking the name of the Son Of God on seeing the state of it!

There is a bit of history to this Alfa Giulietta 2.0.

We have know the Giulietta since 1994 when our friend Steve bought it, Rob is still a friend who lives a mile from me and Alfa Services Northampton was the garage Andy worked for before setting up his own Alfa garage.

Steve bought it from a scrap yard in Buckingham and then drove it as a daily car having it fixed and improved by Alfa Services. He then sold it to Rob who used it as daily and sold it to Alfa Services as a loan car. Steve then bought it back and as he had an attachment for the car, but had to move and lost all his lovely storage. Now off the road and non running he offered it to us knowing that if we took it on it would be saved. I turned it down, step in Mrs6C and in spite of my protests of "what sort of mate are you" Steve offered it to Mrs6C for £1 on the basis it would be safe with her. I knew Mrs6C does not carry cash so the sale could not proceed and we would all be spared years of dealing with a difficult motor car, somehow she miraculously manage to produce a pound coin and handed it to Steve before I could stop her, which why we are all in the position we are!

Following weekend I could have come up and helped out (if you consider a fat bloke standing around with his hands in his pockets as help), good luck all.

Presumably she has people to settle such trivial things as accounts....?

There will be other play days at the Field of Dreams.

Not least because the guys have done so well getting the Spitfire Mk3 with 2.5 6 cylinder engine working, that I want to push on and make it safe and legal to drive on the road.

How about 6/7 April, maybe a day over Easter or is that intruding on family time? I like the idea of an early assessment of what is needed so I can get any parts, even if we don't do a lot. I know I am going to need tyres so will need to put the Spitfire on stands while I get them put on. Then my next free weekend is 25/26 May and I have booked sunshine in the hope some might join me that weekend in the Field of Dreams.

Then 15/16 June or 22/23 June are possible dates. Remember you can work on you own stuff and don't have to work on ours to be welcomed.

I will open the field of dreams for camping during the Festival of the Unexceptional weekend around the 20th July.

I can also open it for Autoshiters camping by request at other times.

I'll be up for bringing a child along and coming for a weekend. The one in March won't work as I've already booked a friend's driveway and got the beers into have a day on the 406, but I can check the diary for the other dates

Can't do Sundays as I'm always with the horse

I'd actually like to have a perve over your CX one day.

You could bring the horse... the Field of Dreams has 10 acres of pasture and there is a nice bridlepath opposite our gate! :-)

My CX has a towbar, but I think I'd be needing the lend of a single-horse trailer to bring Bill over...

When Steve sold the Giulietta to Mrs6C he also gave her a original sales poster that hangs in our living room.
