I like the shape of these ones. How horrific are they in diseasal form?

There is more to the C320CDi story, it belongs to a friends wife who's children have grown up and wanted to change from this sensible saloon to a SLK! SLK is bought and my friend dose not have room or inclination to store/sell it so it has come to me. The plan is to sell it and in the mean time I get to use it.

 

I have had my first drive with it today just a few local errands, it has terrific punch just squeeze and go, 0-60 book time is 6.7 secs. The engine does not have the character of the Alfa V6 petrol but does a good job.

Is that merc the newest thing you've owned?

 

At the moment the 320CDi is the newest car of the household.

 

I have had lots of brand new company cars 1980s and 1990s, the newest car I have bought with my own money was a 2008 Fiat 500 diesel Sport that was 10 months and 8,000 miles old.

bloke at mot garage last time i was there in the summer (hondas dont break :lol: )

 

had just bought 55 plate cls amg :D

 

got a lift off him while dropping the bike for a service and he said he wants to buy an s3 audi - even his missus said wtf why :lol:

Looks great! Does it have airmatic or "sbc"? My cls which was based on this platform did and although it worked fine and is fixable, they used to worry me!

No, it had a fuel leak this morning when it was dislodged from its garage.The fuel pipe union to the carb was loose and nip solved the problem but I don't understand why sitting there for a few days should cause it to leak.

It's self cleaning, they leak petrol to wash the oil leak off.

Progress has been good and nothing we were not expecting.

 

When I say we, I mean Tom the owner is laying on his back with me making coffee and dispensing the odd word of wisdom that comes with mending Triumphs for nearly 40 years!

Cars do have feelings, I can't look my old one in what's left of its face anymore as it's crying. It thought it was a normal day, then it never drove on the road again

On the subject of cars having feelings, if I was a back axle I expect I would whine if I was being used with a broken spring :)

 

 

It also has a lot of backlash but only on the drivers side?

 

Turns out the spring is not broken just saggy and when the car was on stands on the chassis  you could wriggle the end of the spring where it is bolted though the upright and rattle it.

I remember when I was a kid my Dad and his mate changing the rear spring on Reg's Vitesse before he chopped it in on a Renner 16TL.  The seven-year-old me may have learned a few words that day!

I have been to see my friend today who is rebuilding his Riley Elf that his Grandad bought new and has always been in the family.

 

There is a round plastic dome with 4 more modern wires to it that we cannot identify, anybody know?

I can't see what the other end of the wires are attached to, but my first thought on something that size is a voltage regulator for the alternator output.

Bit small for a voltage reg though, in pic 2 there's a voltage reg behind and above it. Looks a bit more like a headlight, spotlight or horn relay to me.

 

I'd be identifying the live, disconnecting it and see what stops working.

The wires are not attached to anything at the moment. The car has always had a dynamo, which has its regulator on the same side as the mystery object.
