Dirt cheap to run shite - suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I've decided that using my current car as a daily is cruel, and while it's nice and relaxing to drive I don't really like using it to commute and do chores in. It can do it, but it's like wearing you best blazer to walk the dog. I want it to be and feel special.

What I need is something small that will live on the road (small hence a small slot on the road where it can stay without pissing anyone off) dirt cheap to run, insure and buy. Not too complex and not too modern and boring. It can't be a Corsa (Go away, Billy ;) ) or a 106. Also, it can't be so rare that it will be a 'mare to find parts for. Tall order?

I've thought about Metros, but having one of those and a Rover 800 would be a step too far in living up to my username...

I've got a long time to think about it and won't be buying until at least Spring, after my wallet has recovered from being dry bummed for a £1300 insurance premium.

But what's the harm in looking around? Anyone looking to shift small, economical shite later in the year?

What are ALL UR SUJESTIONS AORTOSYTE!!!?!!

Cinquecento  S  did me well ,

Siecento Sporting i have now , I think i get to pay more tax than a pre 2000 one ? Its a bit more juicy but nippy enough . Shit yourself on the motorway though, you even look up to Smart carts, and occupants don't survive in a crash. Cheap as chips to run though !

So you are saying you are not driving a minimetro?

R8 vintage 214/414, diesel AX or ford escort mk6 for dirt cheap motoring.

Ooooooh I'm liking the sound of an Escort MK6 - dismal! Could just about get away with on size wise I think.

850cc Daihatsu/Perodua or Skoda Felatio diesel

They're all probably a good steers. I looked at Perodua Kelisas though...Why are they so pricy? Am I missing something?

Isn't someone on here selling a ZX diesel?

Sporty shite ... £275 iirc

I can't believe it wasn't snapped up straightaway, it's got a turbo so would be quite nippy as well.

My misses can get 5 bales of hay   in a Siecento, leaves a lot of mess mind..but its full of mud and horse shit anyway ..

Zx derv. Mines plodded along for 6 months with fuck all being spent. Will need a service and 2 ball joints on payday, then it can be neglected for another 6 months...

Hmmmm...A ZX straddles the line between being compact and not so small you worry about being squashed by Smart cars. That would fit the bill. And this is a) Probably a bit too big b ) probably not that cheap to run and c) for sale now, not in the future. But I have the horn for it regardless.

^^Probably the most sensible suggestion of all, but I spent three years driving one of the fecking things and never want to see another Polo again! :D

They've re-badged it, you fool! ;)

I like it. How often do you need to top the suspension up?

Most things from the 90s are going to fit the bill here really.  For ultra reliability and miserly running costs a Toyota Carina E will fit the bill.  Incredibly dull though, makes a Corsa exciting by comparison.  That said, the Carina E makes drying paint seem like the most exciting explosion fest ever to come out of Hollywood.

What, so if you drive a Carina then Michael Bay directs your life?

I'm never driving a Carina. Sounds pretty risky.

No, if you drive a Carina then Michael Bay directs all the drying paint you're likely to see. The world is TERRIFYING when you drive a Carina, and likely to induce nausea and confusion.

Yes however technically it is not a Metro. Bought March 2010 with no mot at about 33,000 miles, suspension inflated for the mot and done again last August at about 48,000 miles.

A Mk6 Escort can be many things, but cheap to run isn't one of them.

Any half way decent L series Rover would fit the bill, they seem to be cheap at the moment, buy one cheap and get a RoverRon box for it and create the Rover of Doom 2 (Trademark wuvum).

Civic would be another good call, old models are cheap as chips and go on for ever, there's a good mk5 accord 2.2 manual on eBay at the mo for under £500.

Thanks for all the guidance, chaps!

Escort is out then. Metro or a 323f appeals.
