You could always tell them they were right about the clutch or gearbox problem.

Tell them the truth.

Tell them someone walked into your front garden, dropped the cash, didn't ask stupid questions, and drove off, because that's how you get things in life.

Not by wasting everyone's time, and telling pathetic stories no one wants to hear.

I've just sent a text and I've got a text back saying it's going to be picked up on the Tuesday..

So it's watch this space..

I've already given the £100 to my father as I'm working that day so the couple will be picking it up from his house.

So it's a case of if you don't like the car here's your £100 back and it can then stay with the good old Autoshite posse

To be fair the guy himself wasn't a bad bloke and just wanted the car ( and knew it was a fantastic buy) but it was his misses who was holding the purse strings and was trying to find any fault she could with the car and was the one who took it for the test drive and complaining as I don't think she wanted him to have the car.

I'm sorry, but you are going to get grief here.  No one in their right mind hoons  a £500 car and puts it under the microscope after travelling and then plays the, "it's not me, it's the wife"  violin.  If they do turn up on Tuesday with all of the real cash, make sure the paperwork is fully completed (cue the, "do you mind if I take the whole V5C so I can tax it" crap).  There is no need for a receipt in a private sale, if you really think you need to, "Balance of £500 selling price (£400) received today in cash for @@@@ reg number.  Sold as seen, tried and tested, no warranty given or implied".

Then change your sim card, they'll be back.

You can't use 'sold as seen' anymore, not legally anyhow.

I read the first paragraph and assumed it was maybe £2000 or £3000 from the nit picking then got to the £500 bit...

This will end badly. Please, please reconsider. You've got me - of all people - begging you not to do it.

If your dad has the £100 and he's mirrored what folk on here have said, get him to ring them up and tell them the deal's off - his car's been stolen and he needs something to run around in - some cobblers like that. Send them the £100 as a cheque in the post or offer to paypal it straight back. That solves the issue of grasping wifey whinging about fuel (because she seems the type).

DO NOT let this couple buy the car. The fact he's under the thumb with a control-freak dream-killer mental OH is not your problem. She will come back at you ten times over if something breaks.

I think private sales are still automatically sold as seen though, unless the buyer can prove that the seller deliberately hid pre-existing faults.  The SOGA "fit for purpose" bollocks and the "if it goes wrong within 3 months then the fault was already there" approach that the courts take with trade sales don't apply.

Ring ring the other lad and tell him to get round sharpish with £500 and it's his. Then tell the two clowns something's gone wrong and you'll give them the £100 back.

Job done.

If you've still got the car Wednesday, smile! You're £100 better off. If she's so tight with the money, she won't want to lose the deposit so they'll be back.

They'll want it for £250 with a full tank of fuel, but they'll be back. If they've by then spent £40 to get to hours twice, then what are they gonna do? You could give them the £100 back if you're feeling nice and they could still be out of pocket.

Tell them you lost the plot because one of your crack dealing ho's didn't pay you, so you took it out on your car (with your shotgun). I doubt they will give you any trouble after that.

Also drop a few random 'bitch betta have ma money' statements in the conversation.

I'm in agreement with Junkman on this. Why invent stories? Give them the deposit back and simply say you no longer wish to sell the car. If they press you over it tell them to get lost. Period.

I'm unsure about the legal side of 'sold as seen' etc, but I would say... no-one in the world can guarantee a £500/ 20yo old car.

Unless it  terminally expires as they are pulling off your driveway, there is no comeback whatsoever, their fees in pursuing any matter that crops up will far outweigh the money they bought the car for in the first place.

I'm also always amazed at how tight arses operate- as Pillock says above, they will be spending out for four journeys to and from your house instead of two, not to mention taking two days off work instead of one etc etc; if they'd just visited an ATM on their way to you, life would be so much easier for them!  Suppose it's the same as the people who spend £15k on a new car to save £100 a year on road tax :D

Back in 1997, a mate near Oxford was selling an MOT'd S reg Alfasud Ti for £500. Some cockweasel came down from Manchester, left £100 deposit and came back the following weekend. Must be 800 miles and hours of ag.

I don't sell cars, and that's why I have four or five. By the time I want out, it's word of mouth to a nose breathing acquaintance or if it's fucked I do a James Brown on it (TITTB)

Please call them up and return the £100.  Their next step will be they need the car but can't afford it all or some other shyster piece.

As a privateer, never hold a car or take a deposit.  Cash really is King (all of it) and the first deal is really the best.

Incidentally the first sign of ragging the car is when you ask the test pilot to pull over and return the keys (never be out of the car when the keys aren't under your control), then give them directions to find their car/bus stop from there.

This. The woman sounds like a fucking neurotic and will definitely be back with more problems.

Well as you've taken the £100 deposit now so perhaps it's only fair to give them until Tuesday, after all you agreed to this after enduring 1 1/2 hours with them. Many people just don't know how to negotiate and £500 could be a lot of money to them to invest in something vital; maybe this will explain their strange behaviour, so give them the benefit of the doubt. You never know, they may turn up with the cash and drive away no problems. If not lesson learned.

Just remember to sign a SOLD AS SEEN invoice.

You're giving this pair too much credit.

The weird thing was the car was for him but he didn't get to drive the car himself, it was as if she was trying to belittle the guy as the car was supposed to be for him as he needed it for work.

I'm going to write out a receipt as Colino has said saying tried and tested etc.

But if she does start saying she needs another test drive etc or wants to pull the car apart again the deal is off as I know it will sell itself as I've not seen another A4 in as good nick as the car is in time warp condition so I wasn't expecting any problems and can say hand on heart if I needed to go to Scotland and back tomorrow I wouldn't hesitate in the slightest taking this car over a new motor

If I wasn't getting put off work I would keep the old girl in my garage as my backup car but the problem is I've been doing that for the last two years as I just couldn't part with her but she only gets dragged out once a year for the MoT.

Also apparently even the indicators and the switches are all in the wrong place and even the sun visors shouldn't have lighted vanity mirrors as its dangerous so maybe I should of added a pineapple or two lol

I think my father is itching for a fight as he really doesn't want them to have the car so there won't be any excuses if she gets the slightest bit shirty so it will be money back and it will be going to someone who will really appreciate it.

I know if I wanted an excellent low mileage A4 I would snap someone's hand off for it .

Actually the only reason I fitted a new roof on my garage was solely because I didn't want the car getting damp or wet lol

What everyone else has said really, return the £100 deposit and end this deal.....especially if you say you have other interested parties?

When I sell a car I never except a deposit. The car is sold to the first person to turn up with the cash, End. Of.

Whatever happens I have already decided I am never selling my Rover. I hate selling cars at the best of times, and its not worth much anyway so it will be staying with me.

Either you've spent a lot of time and effort remodelling the inside of your A4, or she's a Grade A Mentalist.

Whatever happens, just keep calm and cool. Don't make up stories, no. Like Junkman says, tell the truth and you can't go wrong. Remember it is still your car. You don't have to sell it to them.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"

Hope it all works out for you.

You've got the perfect ally in your dad. If you don't want to do it, he seems more than happy to tell them to FRO.

Cannae really add much more what has alrwady been said. Forget the bloke, doesn't matter how "laid back" he appeared to be, the woman is looking to F**k you over and you'll end up far more stressed and probably more out of pocket,

Tell them the deal is off, you needn't give them an excuse. It's your car you can sell it to who you like. Try and get £100 together and give it back to them and be done with it, otherwise your facing having these people overshadow you.

Tell her you want her to experience another test drive as a passenger.

Just before you do a tremendous emergency stop/brake test, flip her belt off and there will be one less fuck-wad in the world.

If you sell the car to this couple and it turns nasty, I won't have much sympathy. Sorry.

You can end this easily; your dad will do it for you - happily by the sounds of things. Although his OH is clearly out to lunch, letting the bloke down gently may make you feel better about doing it - but it needs ending, now.
