BX diesel auto for sale...

The time's come to move on this one I bought from a BXClub forum member back in 2011.

It's a 1.9 non turbo diesel auto hatch - here's two images from then - main exterior difference now is a full set of correct TZD wheel trims and a replacement rear hatch with the correct 19 TZD name plate (but not fitted!)

MOT until May 2015

£350 ono

This is a naturally aspirated 1905cc diesel with the ZF 14HP4 autobox so it's not very fast!  It does have the Bosch VE diesel pump though and being TZD spec has nice supportive harder wearing velour seats, etc..

Judging by the condition when I got it this car looks like it probably had a gentle early life, possibly garaged as there's little of the 'hidden' rust that can affect BX bodyshells. Both front door hinges are pretty much perfect and haven't ever been welded.

Recently this car's had a fair bit of work done to it, mostly by me and some by our local Citroen Specialist, Tony & Andy Weston in Cambridge, near Dursley, Gloucestershire.

In the last couple of months:
  • Removed diesel pump to replace driveshaft seal and some others.
  • All injector leakoff pipes replaced
  • replaced original fuel filter and housing with new, leak free type and all filter to pump hoses
  • Fitted new cambelt, camshaft seal and crank seal.
  • Fitted genuine bottom coolant hose and thermostat bypass hose
  • Fitted new genuine front brake discs and pads
  • Fuel tank lowered to replace perished and leaking breather pipe
  • Replaced rear suspension spheres

In the last 6 months:
  • brake doseur low pressure return pipe repaired (MOT)
  • Steering Coupling (Hardy Disc) replaced (MOT)
  • Nearside steering rack boot replaced (MOT)
  • Nearside track rod replaced (MOT)
  • Fitted new diesel feed and return flexible pipes (MOT)
  • Drained and flushed hydrualic system with hydraflush, cleaned filters and replaced with new LHM
  • Cooling system flushed and replaced with long life coolant
  • Oil and filter changed.
  • High Pressure pump side camshaft seal replaced
  • Heater fan motor control module replaced.

In the last 2 years:
  • Fitted 2 x front suspension droplinks
  • Fitted new waterpump
  • Fitted new accumulator sphere
  • Replaced all old automatic transmission fluid with Dextron II
  • All glowplugs replaced with new Beru ones.

Remaining 'issues' I haven't got around to resolving and have just lived with are:

  • Auto has a tendency to flare (slip into neutral) if pushed hard in it's lowest gear when pulling away. It doesn't do it in other gears and kickdown seems to work fine. It'd perfectly driveable though and not being a fast car I've just got used to it! I had planned to do a manual conversion but I have 2 other BX's and not enough time so someone else can do this if they like...
  • At some point in it's previous life some airhorns had been fitted with relays and the ignition switch replaced (2 keys now). In the process some wiring had been altered and / or bodged and this could do with looking at and some of it replacing with new cable. The starter solenoid sometimes sticks on starting once the cars hot – a few starting attempts always fixes it though. The oil level gauge in the dash doesn't work and the radio is wired to switch off with the ignition... None of this is very terminal and easily sorted..
  • In very cold weather the power steering can be a little notchy before the LHM has warmed up.. This is either a weak HP pump (s/h one supplied with car) or dirty filters in the flow valve – quite a common issue and shouldn't be difficult to resolve. Hasn't got bad enough to be an MOT failure... Disappears when running with hydraflush!
Paint has lost some of it's laquer the worst places being the bonnet and roof. Most of the panels have a scratch or two too..
  • Heater control valve a bit sticky – heater control will go cold but only go to ¾ hot... Works fine though and gets hot enough to keep comfy and clear screen – fan blower works well though at all speeds. The valve near the bulkhead would really need replacing and I can supply one if necessary.

That seems exceedingly good value, even with a few foibles thrown in. I'd personally get it on Carandclassic or similar with a higher asking price.

However tempting to keep quiet and beat your door down for that, you really should be offering that at a lot more. Then again, it's nice for you to offer it to us first for that price!

How glacial is the acceleration? No must resist, the ever expanding list of things to do on the astate precludes whimsical purchases of more BXs.

Looks ace however I would imagine the lack of a turbo and being slushomatic means the acceleration is on a par with continental drift.

I think anybody doing 0-60 times would be better off with a sundial.

No, that's fairly priced I'd say, possibly a hundred shy of what it could sell for at the right time to the right person  - potential probs with the box could cost a fair bit to put right if/when they develop. Bargain for someone who has keen selling skills and a garage-ful of BX gearboxes and other bits, of course.

Come on over to the dark side, junkman! Wrong fuel but right box, and it shares the floor pan of the 405.

The temptation to buy this even though I can't afford insurance, fuel, or anything of the sort is too high. I don't even have somewhere to keep it...

Which, considering Autoshite, is a pretty good reason to buy it.

Must... resist...

Yep, auto BX's seem to be an aquired taste - the box hasn't got any worse or better since I've owned it - there is a brake band adjustment that I haven't tried yet but nothing else apart from the kickdown cable adjustment that can be tweaked... kickdown works as it should but given enough welly it'll try to do it in the lowest gear when pulling away and then slips into neutral....

I often use this on my daily 60 mile commute and it's perfectly driveable if you're not expecting it to be fast, especially up hills...

Ha - yes more is always nice but it doesn't owe me much apart from time and I like the honest and practical autoshite vibe... and given it's not a show type polished BX it seems right to advertise it here...

Is Ken still about on the BXClub? This'd be right up his street I reckon.

No, think he had a fire in his storage space and lost all his BX / XM parts... hasn't been on the BX Forum for ages...

Up for sale again - this is my bad penny car - I can't seem to let it go and I just seem to keep it running... I have most of the parts for a manual conversion and these can be supplied if necessary although the auto box is perfectly driveable if a little slow...

I now have another BX estate coming so this really has to go - since the first ad I've fitted new rear lights, new thermostat  now starting to pressurise so definately OMGHGF but these happen gradually on the XUD and it's still driveable - probably not to Scotland though.. as this isn't the turbo it's not a nasty job as there's lots of space around the engine...

Still has an MOT until June 1st - I'll probably put another year on it too if it doesn't sell by then...

Has a good solid shell and no bad A post rot / door hinge problem like many BX's.

V. economical and a good summer project for someone without 3 other BX's!

£200

I don't but this kind of thing is common in Citroen circles I fear...

Even at the old price, it's still TBC - I thought after GTi 16v models, Don Brennan dizzlers were the next most sought after??

I'll mention it to Chris (Doc) as he wants another auto, though Im not sure if he wants the ZF box, but I'll mention it to him anyway.

Maybe I've been driving them too long and remembered when you could pick up a 16v for £50..   The turbo diesel hatchbacks seem to get good prices - fairly quick as they're so light..

Yesterday I decided to sell 2 or 3 cars so why am I considering purchasing this?

Believe me if I hadn't already committed to a Grom and valued the attachment of my testicles to my personage and them not being used as ear rings for my wife then I would be all over this like a dose of galloping knob rot as I have a donkey that would slot in....

Ha, yes I've offered to him many times but he seems to like the pain of welding his other bx's!

Have you been drinking with Savvy?

Yup. Bargain. Fill a roofbox with water for longer trips, K-series style. The suspension will adjust for the added weight.

I would say so - top hose is harder than normal when warm... coolant merrily bubbles but not shoots out of the rad cap when opened...
