HillmanImp Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Here are my spots from my holiday in Northern Cyprus. They loved the older car there, here are most of the ones I spotted: IMAG1109 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1081 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1119 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1132 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1122 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1069 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1074 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1073 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1134 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1132 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1119 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1100 by Afalseicon, on Flickr SiC, Spiny Norman, Shep Shepherd and 6 others 9
KruJoe Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Hmm, do I see a theme developing here? Partridge 1
Noel Tidybeard Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 oi renner did other number as well as 9 &11 you know! eddyramrod 1
HillmanImp Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 I don't think I had put up an 11 there did I, I am sure DD245 is also a 9. I did see a couple: IMAG1107 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1080 by Afalseicon, on Flickr but they were not very common. They seem to like their booted cars there more: Booted Clio which I think has been seen by most beforeIMAG1101 by Afalseicon, on Flickr Booted Punto (new one on me)IMAG1120 by Afalseicon, on Flickr Here is the hatchback version.IMAG1131 by Afalseicon, on Flickr Booted Megane which it seems was sold here but I don't recall ever seeing one. I got quite excited about this too when I saw it too. However the Toyota Corsa is interesting. Its almost like a Vauxhall that's not shit. I know, MENTAL.IMAG1133 by Afalseicon, on Flickr Other spots were these: WTF:IMAG1070 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1071 by Afalseicon, on Flickr I was thinking 'is that some sort of Turkish car based on a Cortina? No it is a Cortina, the owner is a lunatic' This however was parked in the apartment opposite: IMAG1146 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1145 by Afalseicon, on Flickr Saw the owner with it so went outside to speak to him but as I did so, he walked into the building before I could get to him. It still had English plates underneath but I thought it would be rude to check them thinking I would do it another day when I saw him but never did. He had a grey mullet though so you can tell he was pretty much the coolest guy in the world. Were these sold in Britain or were they soooooo bland I totally missed them?IMAG1075 by Afalseicon, on Flickr This I popped on the cars abroad thread:IMAG1062 by Afalseicon, on Flickr Ex pat that was living in the same area as us:IMAG1038 by Afalseicon, on FlickrIMAG1039 by Afalseicon, on Flickr And finally a Sera:IMAG1136 by Afalseicon, on Flickr Spiny Norman, brickwall, Mr Lobster and 1 other 4
Sigmund Fraud Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Hang on... One million Renner 9/11s but not even a single Tofas ? I'm very disappointed ! "Punto" is actually an early Fiat Palio, supposedly Fiat's answer to the motoring needs of developing nations. brickwall 1
HillmanImp Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 Hang on... One million Renner 9/11s but not even a single Tofas ? I'm very disappointed ! "Punto" is actually an early Fiat Palio, supposedly Fiat's answer to the motoring needs of developing nations. I know, I was really surprised I had not taken any photos of them either. Or any Renault 12s. Odd as there were loads about. However I was trying to be nice and take more photos of the missus than cars for once to avoid a nagging. I managed to get an agreement that I could take photos of loads of Renault 9's for some reason as she seemed to quite like them. The other day I also showed her a picture of the Council Estate CMS has and she asked why I sold it as she liked that too. I thought that the Palio was simply an updated Punto, did not realise it was a different car. Well you learn something new every day. cms206 1
rml2345 Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Cyprus must have about 75% of the total production of Renault 9s. Looks a good place for a shiters' holibags.
r.welfare Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 That 'Tina is a Turkish produced one, I seem to recall they made them into the '90s which explains the homebrewed/half-assed facelift which is actually a factory job. Why are some cars RHD and some LHD? Is it because some are on the Cypriot side and some on the Turkish side? HillmanImp 1
Partridge Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Wow! Really awesome spottages my man!And the wtf Ford is a Turkish made Cortina 80.
PhilA Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I need to get someone to send me a late model set of lights, grille and bumpers for mine. --Phil
HillmanImp Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Someone on Facebook just pointed out that the Cortina was indeed meant to look like that as standard (sorry R Welfare, I missed your comment). Some stock photos from t'interweb: I thought it was the creation of a madman but it seems it was the creation of a group of them, in a factory churning out loads of them. MENTALZ Why are some cars RHD and some LHD? Is it because some are on the Cypriot side and some on the Turkish side? I guess some come over from the mainland Turkey. All of Cyprus is RHD IIRC but there were a few LHD cars about. Also just found this on my phone: IMAG1104 by Afalseicon, on Flickr IMAG1105 by Afalseicon, on Flickr brickwall 1
eddyramrod Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 You do see a LOT of Renaults on the north side, I noticed that. I suspect that at least some models were Turkish-built, probably after French production ended. I'm sure I saw quite a lot of 9s being used as rentals. Older cars are most likely to have been left behind in 1974, after the invasion. The south is more filled with crewcab pickups, cheap Jap tin and big diesel Mercs, with an emphasis on newer models. Older cars on this side tend to be valued by the Brits more than by locals, though I do know one or two , as mentioned ad nauseum in other threads!
HillmanImp Posted June 11, 2024 Author Posted June 11, 2024 Well, nearly 10yrs later and another trip to Kyrenia. What a shithole. Its chock full of empty casinos and high end clothing shops, which according to the people I spoke to are all money laundering fronts for Russian gangsters. The harbour has been modernised, absolutely ruining it too. Instead of Renault 9s there was nothing but Range Rovers, several Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches. Utterly miserable. Still lots of old chod about but it wasn't everywhere, you had to look out for it. What I managed to pap is below. This was the 2nd time I spotted this: This was in Nicosia. There was a Stag and Mk1 Escort up the road I wasn't able to snap as we were travelling in a bus. Spot the difference: This was one of ImpJrs favourite spots. Inexplicably rusty, must've come from the UK? One of the few Renault 11s I saw: Bit beaten up. Suspect its a victim of some of the very high kerbs. This hadn't moved for a while by the looks of things: Outside a casino: And thats that. I don't reckon there'll be a follow-up in 10yrs time as it was so grim this time I dread to think how shit it'll be by then, unless all the Russians pull out. Although, I am tempted to go and rescue a Renault 9 before they've all gone........ Dyslexic Viking, UltraWomble, SiC and 8 others 11
Matty Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 only been to Turkey once and wasn't keen either. But got to love a Tofas. That one is particularly nicely done 👏 Rustybullethole 1

Schaefft Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 Holy crap, loving the Fleetwood Brougham! One of the best colors and the right wheels for it, too! HillmanImp 1
Rustybullethole Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 Lovely stuff. Not enough beat down motors on the road in the uk. Always interesting to look at. HillmanImp 1
