Merc w202 C250TD estate sold

I've been thinking for a while I could do with an estate car for occasional tat hauling duties. I have also realised that it's over a year since I bought a car, during which time I have sold 4. I still have too many cars but that's not the point.

My current thoughts are that I could either go for something usable for work or something different/interesting as a keeper.

Work car: ideally would be automatic, turbo diesel and have cruise control ... I've been thinking Merc W202 c220 cdi, Volvo 850 tdi
Interesting: pretty much anything 70-80's. Renault 12, Merc W123, Citroen GSA, Audi 100, a Rancho would be the ultimate.

Whatever I go for must have MOT and be usable straight away, I don't care about cosmetics but no projects unless it's a Rancho or something equally awesome.
Budget 1k, I can do more for something special.

Cheers Richard, I would love a CX (fuck knows where I'd put it) but I simply don't have time for any projects.

There's a couple of motors on my watch list ending soon that I'm undecided about as they sort of fit in between the roles of keeper & work car.

Volvo 240GL auto ... link ... It seems in quite good nick for 290k

BMW 525iX (4wd) ... link ... I know nothing about 4wd BMW's.

I'm unsure about obscure 4x4 cars, I imagine them to have lots of obscure parts limited to the model.

Based on that, Peugeot 405 GLx4 estate.

I know that quite well, I used to own a Jetta Syncro and parts specific to the 4wd model had to be imported from Germany or Holland,

Mk2 Mong-deo's are actually quite nice places to spend protracted periods of time. I had one from 132k to 152k and only sold it because my brother in law had blown up his vectra estate and needed a vehicle to transport his family more than I did (at the time)

Volvo 850Tdi would be top of my list. Richard's was very jolly to drive. After my test of Myglaren's Citroen C5 though, I'd put one of those on the list for sure. Available in diesel auto form, and I bet top-spec ones have cruise control.

I don't know about protract(ed) but I'd rather have a prolapse than another Mk2 Mondeo.

Although your spec list would probably be hard to find in this FLAVA, Skttrd, I'd like to suggest a Xantia estate. Good on fuel, veg friendly (if you get the right pump, of course) and supremely comfortable.

Just make sure its a TD auto, they made a non turbo auto Xantia and believe me, it wouldn't pull the dick off of a chocolate mouse.

My mk3 astra is brilliant, it has ticked every box for a daily/workhorse. 405 GLDT was just slightly better though.

Some good suggestion folks, I'm not in a rush to get anything at present, so will keep the idea of the C5 in the back of my mind as they're quite easy to find.

I am sort of with DW on this one as an 850 tdi is pretty much top of the list for a work car, but they're not very common, especially with the features I want. I wouldn't mind a Xantia TD auto estate, but TD auto's are rare, 405 is a good shout as well, I'll keep my eye out for one of those.

Scorpio, 760, W124, too big or not economical enough for work and not different enough for a keeper, so not for me.

I am thinking a W123 is probably top of the list at present as they're robust enough to be used/abused whilst still being a bit rarer nowadays. To me this means it could potentially be used for work occasionally whilst being a keeper.

How is a W124 suitable but a W123 not? They also rot pretty horrifically and laugh in the face of economy.

W123 is older rarer and more interesting, it could potentially be a keeper, whereas a W124 is more common and not something I'd consider keeping long term.

Either could occasionally be used for work, but would not fill the role of work car for me.

Be warned it is very easy to get an horrendously shit c5, be very picky if you do.

That's undoubtedly true. They strike me as a 'luck of the draw' kind of a car. Probably why I like them...

Like Land Rover Discos, they seem a car with a poor rep, but there are lots around with stellar mileage.

Yeah, we had one in recently, needed new discs & pads all round, handbrake cables & tubes, both rear calipers, arm bushes as well as the basic service & timing belt.
