It's an odd place, I only go on there when I need some obscure/difficult to find bits and as Scotty says, very good.

I went to the National Rally a couple of years ago, folk were a bit stand off ish, but maybe that's because I had the seats folded and a dog in the back of mine whereas they were the sort of peeps who spent the day polishing. Curiously, my old motor with it's slightly dismal paint didn't attract any admiring glances but has outlived at least one of the show cars there, which although polished to buggery apparently rotted out underneath and has been broken & scrapped.

I went to the show at Harewood House (where the photo on the previous page was taken) a few years ago and the car received quite a good reception. There were quite a few daily drivers though in various states so it fitted in quite well. I think the 'show'n shine' crew were parked elsewhere taking it in turns to polish themselves off.

Have to say Mr Shitpeas, girls generally did not like the car when I had it. Nice to see a lady with some taste.

She's been suffocated into submission with an endless cavalcade of premium shite. Though initially uninterested, and then downright vocally opposed to buying auld tin, she's finally starting to come around.

I think it's called Stockholm Syndrome.

But they only have four speed Arthur Askey boxes.

I am currently working the same long game on my missus. She has a Mazda 2 which is worth about 5k. I reckon she should sell it and get a Focus for £1.5k and spend the change on a new pair of wabs.

Gr11 plan. If she's looking to move the old pair on to free up some room, Billy always needs somewhere to park his bike.

Sort of like the the Patty Hearst of shite. :)

back in the days when I was yet again, skint, I used to buy accident damaged cars, repair them and flog them on (at uni/single parent, that level of skint!) and I bought one for £120. It had a very slight biff up the bum and was being sold by its one owner. Fuel injected version (GTX?) and mint apart from the drivers side rear corner. I have to be honest and say I have NEVER been a fan of any VW product, no reason, just dislike them intensely.

It was fekkin' great!

I absolutely loved that car, ran it for ages as my daily and never did repair the rear quarter other than make it so the back lights fitted again. Went through its MOT like that and eventually sold to the first viewer for a handsome profit. It felt properly sprightly, tight and nimble, quickish and good on fuel. Almost transformed my opinion of VWs... but only 'almost'!

I had a mk1 when i was 19ish,bought from the actions for around £100. R reg olive green with green seats and carpets.Filled the A pillars and scuttle with wob, nursed it through a test and ran for 8months or so then swapped for a scrot mk2 shaggin wagon, hand bashed in black paint.

The bloke 2 doors from my mother has a mk1 storm i'll get some photo's next time i am over.

Bit big that? Its like a Chavalier is to the Disastra which would place it like the Pisshat to the Scirocco?

Would though.

Have any of you guys ever seen a mk2 gti one ?

Really rare and other than the one my dad had I've never seen another.

Single wiper , y reg with the 1.8 kjet . No body kit and 13 inch wheels.

Gt2 , scalas and gtxs don't count

I think all the early Mk2s had single wiper, as the Mk1 had it and it was only a panelwork update. The Mk2 Scirocco is still based on the Mk1 Golf, rather than the Mk2.

Yeh that's right. My main memories of it are great seats , good on fuel and terrible brakes ( drums on the back)

It always saddens me that we didn't get the 16v - not in any numbers that mattered anyway - yet the septics did. :(

Those Mk1s were so gorgeous in the late 70s in their metallic reds and metallic turquoises with lovely cloth interiors and matching carpets.

It is hard to overstate just how smart and crisp and (whisper it) middle class they looked in a world of Capris and Celicas.

I ended up owning a five year old Mk1 four speed GLi - which was rapid.

Such a sweet engine and a lovely thing to own and I'm not sure 30 years (and 40 cars) later I have ever owned anything more stylish.

I had a Mk2 a few years later, but losing the trump card of drop dead gorgeous styling rather made it just another sports hatch.

The 16V and standard GTI are not far away from each other. Both aren't happy revvers and the 16V advantage took place beyond 5000, you really had to thrash it for gain. The K-Jet 1,8 GTI with 112hp is the engine to go.

I saw this photo the other day. I can't see properly but it kind of looks like this one had drums at the front too?

Nah, just rusty discs. Brakes are not too bad for an 80s VW - which means fairly crap but ok once you're used to them.

I finally scrapped mine last year, so OF COURSE the values rocketed the next bloody day. It was a 1.6 carb, and rotten. Took quite a long time to rot, mind.

Mate of a mate used to own this pretty nice mk2.

The brake problem is just because the linkage, lhd Sciroccos brake very well, this has nothing to do with rear drums. I had a lhd GTS and a rhd Storm, they were worlds apart concerning braking, rhd models had a remote system to the (whatsitcalled) brake booster, leading to poor braking.

Just like me Escort.

Many cars suffer from being bodged into RHD conversions.

Yep, ridiculous linkage on rhd cars. To improve the brakes the 280mm disc conversion is the way to go, it just means you need to run 15" wheels.

Na mate, rusty discs innit.

Oddly the photo comes up a lot bigger on here than it does on FB. I couldn't see the caliper. Did think it was odd that it would have drums at the front. Mine had discs as was not exactly top of the range.

That said, I went from a GTi 8v Cabriolet to a 16v Hatchback and there was quite a difference, but the cabriolets are rather heavy cars so that may have played a part. The 16v was great, tough old buses too.

A Scirocco is becoming rather appealing actually, but I would have to find a standard one. Need to check for rotten fuel tanks and fuel lines on these much like the MK1 Golfs they are based on.

Another quick - 'these things are brilliant' post.

When I bought mine, I'd not driven a front wheel drive car in a decade. It came as a bit of a shock, the bloody thing just ploughed straight on at every opportunity. It was a while before I realised that the car pulled to the right at all times and that the steering wheel was turned a little to the left when driving in a straight line.

I bought it a full set of winter tyres and took it to have the tracking set up properly.

There was also a big red bar, which turned out to be a bottom strut brace, in the boot - so I had that fitted at the same time.

Transformed ?

I can't begin to tell you, although it's not a particularly powerful (75bhp) or fast car (95mph is the fastest I've bothered to do), it's the cornering that is where the fun is. It only weighs 850 - 875 kg according to what you read and in a lot of circumstances it will actually corner in an even more mental fashion than the 944.

I've only had it understeer once since tracking/strut brace day and that was probably me being a little enthusiastic (entering a roundabout at 60mph in the lagging rain) rather than any inherent fault of the car.

In certain corners, I can just feel the rear wheels slide a teeny bit causing it to tighten very slightly.

It's bizarre, it took me the longest time to get used to the uncanny balance and power of the 944 & here I am in a cheap underpowered car with all the weight at the front having lots of fun.

Brand new summer tyres 185/60X14 are only about £35 for a Barum / Continental copy thing.

And it's best mileage to date is an impressive 44mpg.

Of course in the early days the Scirocco had some really lovely, if flaky, competition with Beta HPE, Sud Sprint and even a Renault 17 to consider.

The Mk1 Gli/Storm was so right it is up there with a Saab 99 Turbo in late 70s desirability.

Didn't good old LJK Setright own a Storm? I know he used to go on about how wonderful they were, even comparing them favourably to his beloved Bristols (the car, not big boobies!).
