Is it just me, or is this not really in keeping with the spirit of the rally?

I'd call it cheating

Because its new? (In some circles, they would consider using a Ford a distinct disadvantage!)

I thought that, good luck getting it fixed when the electronics malfunction in mongolia

What's Uzbec for

"  have you diagnostic equipment for a UK registered Ford as the battery voltage has gone below 12.562 volts and the EMU needs a software update and hardware reset "  ??

0/10 must try harder

Are they going to weigh it in at the end?

Something like this might be worth decent wedge in Mongolia provided the local blacksmith has some decent IT equipment

Is it not maybe some kind of 'support vehicle'...If so, probably not what I would have chosen for the task...

You have to bring the car home now, so they may be taking a massive gamble on their daily driver...if that's the case then fair play to them!

I know these hearty middle class ,mid-life crisis types in their Batman outfits who spend £5000 on a £100 car and raise £200 for charity* are annoying , smug and often deserve a good kicking for their hilarious * modifications.

But I think calling them Mongols is a bit old fashioned and non PC.

Been said before but I'd really like to do something like the Mongol Rally. Just without all the wackiness and ruining the car by making it look like the Ghostbusters car or whatever and then leaving it to spend eternity dumped in a foreign field.

Get a ZX diesel* sell it on Shitebay Gambia with delivery included, deliver, new owner will keep it going on 2 cylinders and 10,0000,00002 miles on the broken speedo as luxury transport seating 17 tourist persons.

One team is taking a 2CV. It's had some pretty hardcore preparation for it. Whereas two teams took 2CVs in pretty much standard road trip a few years back. One got written off in a smash in Russia...

Even in a modern, it's a pretty epic adventure. There are hard miles on barely-there roads. No way I'd want to do it in a modern personally! There's a rally going on somewhere at the moment and I've seen the teams complaining because Police and officials keep asking for bribes. Er, you're leaving the West. Be prepared for cultural differences!

Or it's someone hoping their company car will make it! Props to them if they take it into ford when they get back for it's next service without cleaning it!

Would love to see pics of it when it gets back...

First look, and I thought that fiesta was a Hyundai i10 (All modern cars look the same blah.. blah....)

Personally I am all for one of the teams as its taking what can only be described as a huge risk:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/team-marco-polover-2014-mongol-rally

They are using a Daihatsu Move. Now having just got one and using it as my daily snorter I do fell like they are going to roll it at least once before the Ferry!!!

Mind you in all honesty I wish i was going.. Bugger raising cash for charity and all that so called "for a good cause" rubbish... just do it because it looks like fun.

In all honesty I thought it was a Kia - just goes to show!

My thoughts exactly. I've been on a few (much) smaller scale similar events, one for charity and I have to say I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been. One of the people we met on the way said how great it was going through such hardship or something like that. Erm, no it wasn't. It was a load of fun, but that made me feel guilty for enjoying a charity trip. That said, it raised considerably more for charity than was spent, so I guess it was a win-win.

On the non-charity trips I couldn't help feeling I'd have preferred it with less stickers etc - the ideal situation (for me) would just be a simple road trip with a bunch of mates. I.e. less about the cars themselves and more about the event.

Those spotlights on that modern thing disturb me as much as seeing a five year old with a tattoo.

I did two and really enjoyed them. They basically were a massive piss up across Europe. We did both for charity and raised £6.5k in the first and £5k in the second .

All the costs of the trip were from our pockets as we were enjoying ourselves. I don't agree with people who get others to pay for their fun.

The thing i don't get with mongol rally is the point. I would love to do it but then why pay them to do it when you don't go together, support is non existent and you don't even finish together.i love the concept but then why not just DIY

I feel the same Mat, presumably the same event in mind! Perhaps we should try to organise some non-charity trip.

A non charity trip? What a good idea...... Also known as having a drive and enjoying it

My Daihatsu Move is almost ready for its NON charity based road tip... Well when i say ready it still needs the oil leaking finding and fixing, the front struts sorting and a bloody good service before i venture more than 20 miles....

Wanting to do the Fosse way and or LEJOG (or both) because I want to and not because I need to raise funds for the "Vegetarian 3 Legged Lesbian Donkey trust". Trust me they don't need my cash.

Alas finding scrap parts let alone new parts for these is a challenge in itself, but thats part of the fun

i think its a B Max with the 1.0 turbo engine, not at all highly strung.

Each to his own, but for me the days of finding piss ups amusing are behind me.  I'm also weary of the number of requests I get to shell out for people doing something either 'wacky' or 'gruelling' for charity.  [/grumpy old git]

Mind you, I'm always up for a convoy with some like-minded mates from, say, Devil's Bridge to Aberaeron for a fish supper.
