Hey, that's good for one of them! I've got them down to 15.

How in god's name did you get 15MPG from an XJ40? Did you leave the heater on or something? Leave it idling too long while you drew a cock on a swan?

I would buy this immediately if the heater worked.

There are a few reasons why the heater generally stops providing heat on the XJ40. Ocasionally, the heater matrix bypass valve (which shuts off hot water to the heater matrix when the system is set to full cold) sticks shut, preventing flow of hot water. The valve is vacuum operated, but will generally stick in an open position, so this is possible, but unlikley. They can generally be freed with your finger.

The blend flaps can stick, either through non-use, or because of dead spots on the flap potentiometer or stuck gear motors. Sometimes it can be as simple as a slightly unplugged climate control ECU, but I imagine Spiny Norman has tried that. The plug is large and heavy, and can come slightly loose.

The is absolutely loads on climate control unit problem solving on the internet. It is worth looking through it if you would consider the car if the heater worked. CCU problems such as this no heat problem are not unknown, particularly on cars which don't get driven much or are left standing for a long time. I have never had the problem, but it does seem to be one of the problems people have decent success with. The XJ40 is an easy car to work on. They're designed to come apart easily then go back together again. The dash is a clever design that way. I have taken the dash out on my car a few times now. It only takes an hour or two! This car has a passenger's airbag though; mine does not, so that will add time. The main problem is a lack of space, which is challenging if you're a bit inflexible like me.

Here is one post, basically the first hit on Jag-lovers search. I seem to think you need to join the site to read them, but it is free. http://forums.jag-lovers.org/av.php?1647106o29

There are a few posts on CCU problem solving - and also some on xj40.com.

Of course, it is difficult to judge the easiness of the repair when you don't have the car infront of you!

To be honest, I haven't investigated the lack of heat that closely, it just hasn't been an issue so far. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the flaps or motor in the distribution box though, because the pipes going into the heater matrix get hot.

It probably is something that someone with a bit of mechanical skills/large collection of hammers could sort I'd imagine.

Anyway, looks like a sale is in the offing tomorrow, so it could be heading to pastures new. :)

I'm pretty sure it will be. The interested party is a good guy and he's delighted at the prospect .

LMAO. Not really sure, it wasn't like I caned it. Although I did enjoy pissing an A4 driver off, when my crabby old Jag vomited in the face of their 40 grand Blueteethmotionsport TDFSiEcoTec on the A27

Well that was the easiest car sale I've ever done.
Few PMs and a thoroughly nice chap turned up at my door half an hour ago, looking only slightly bedraggled by one of Glasgow's fabulous* summer days. Quick chat, papers signed, money exchanged for keys, location of petrol station & sandwich shop divulged & off she went.

Hope you enjoy being a Jaaag owner as much as I did, mrbuffs. :)

Well, I can honestly say it was mere yards before the problems started. First junction I came to and I was sat for 5 minutes trying to restart it, only to realise that it hadn't stalled it was just the whisper quiet engine is utterly imperceptible to anyone in the car. Then a few hundred feet later I caused a great deal of confusion by calling out to passers by demanding they bring me some port and a cigar, and what kind of gentleman's club did they think they were running? Only moments went by after that episode and I accosted a young woman at the traffic lights asking if she'd like to buy a genuine rolex, mate got them from a guy at the docks extra crate delivered and they were going cheap as chips.

As I type this I'm waiting for my size camel overcoat to be found in the stock room of a dodgy tailor and wondering who's running at the dogs tonight.

This is on a shoogly peg unfortunately. Basically the fuel pump died a week or so after buying... It was running absolutely fine and he drove down to the local asda in it. Came back out and it wouldnt start. Fuel pump utterly silent so that was blamed and a new pump bought and fired in.

The new pump is working and supplying fuel to the engine. When you  disconnect it the fuel shoots out at good pressure, but for some reason it just wont start, looks like the injectors arent opening. When fuel is poured in directly it runs fine.

The long and short of it is he hasnt any more money to throw at it, and the slightly cack handed mechanic managed to snap the fuel rail while reconnecting it, so that ended the fault finding.

with a heavy heart he's going to weigh it in as its sitting on the road untaxed. It could be an easy 2 min fix or it could be a total bastard, but if someone wants to take it on he'll take £250 as it stands - basically scrap money plus the cost of the new pump. Everything else about the car is as was before and its in Fife.

Anyone want to take it on before it ends up baled? (mods can you change the header to for sale again??) ta!

NOOOOOO!!!  Fuxake.

I'm 450 miles away with no storage so I'm not well placed to collect it, but surely we can sort something out between us?  I thought this was a pretty decent one?

Posted

Wasn't Bollox after an XJ6 Jag? Get some shipley dudes to drag it down on the cheap then bish bosh. I make it sound so easy* don't I?

Posted

Is it in fife ? I've got an empty lockup in Ayrshire. someone can store it in there short term if they want it?

Posted

it has a FULL THREE WEEKS  MoT.

It'd be a huge shame to cart it off to the scrappy as its a nice old barge but at this time of year I'm not hugely hopeful unfortunately.

Posted

So basically he's scrapping it because it's run out of tax, then?  FFS.

That would suck to see this die. The only non standard thing about was a push button start and an immobiliser-my money would be on one of these having gone fits up.

Someone save it please, it was a lovely car and doesn't deserve to die from cack-handedness

No... he's scrapping it because he doesn't know whats wrong with it and hasn't got the funds to throw at it. Its sitting on the street untaxed with no prospect of him being able to get it back on the road and he needs transport so his hands are tied.

at 250 sods if someone wants to give it a go and doesn't get anywhere you're not going to lose weighing it in.

Is it in the kingdom of fife? Just thinking how much it would cost to cart it back here.

Fffffuuuuuuu........ I'm nowhere near it, and have nowhere to put it, but if anyone needs a bit of help affording it I'll throw some cash into the kitty if it sees it saved - the deal is, I get to sit in it one day, perhaps even rev it a little bit.

^This.  +1.

I get that it's broken and he hasn't got the funds to fix it, but surely he could have taxed it for the month (on direct debit) so he had until the MOT ran out to find a buyer instead of waiting 12 days then giving us this ultimatum... oh well, whatever.  Not having a go at anyone, especially not you Dave - in fact thanks for bringing this to our attention -  I'm just frustrated.

He's already tipped a few quid into a new fuel pump then no doubt had to pay this rubbish mechanic to fit it and smash the fuel rail, meaning he's shelled out for both those and gained nowt as the thing is still a non runner. With a short MOT I'd probably be sending this over the bridge as well if i was trying to get on with my life, sounds like stress to me

Well i want the jag and I've got the cash.

But I haven't got time or the cash to fetch a 2 ton non runner 400 miles.

For that reason.......

Ahm OOT.

Fucked Jag gets scrapped. Sad, but it happens every day.

^^ this is basically where he is at - its been sat since september while he chewed over what to do, I just thought i'd post it on here on the off chance.

That said, it is a bloody lovely old bus and probably not a difficult fix - and its no lose cash wise if you get it, find its a no go and have to weigh it in yourself.

Its a lovely looking car but its worth sod all. I love my Shaguar, its a great looking car, is lovely to drive but every little noise makes me think, 'oh here it comes'. I love being in it but the horrible thought of repair costs has left me in a situation where my arse looks like Bridget Jones sucking a lemon every time I drive it.

Would be a shame to see the old girl cubed or broken up for what is probably a fairly straightforward fix. The pics I put up earlier do flatter it a bit (nice day, just polished, bit of Photoshoppage on the still bent bonnet ;) ) but it was a lovely old bus to drive and I certainly didn't think it would die so soon, unfortunately we're still at the stage where they're pretty much worthless and decent ones can be had for next to nothing so there's little incentive to spend money fixing one.

I think these basic Cobra immobilisers are pretty easy to take out of circuit and the start button just has two wires coming out of it so those shouldn't be a problem for someone with a modicum of electrical ability if that's where the problem lies.

Ah I see Dave has beaten me to it. I was going to stick a post on before it met its maker to see if it was worth something to someone as, with regret, it's not worth more than scrap to me.

The facts are these - when it was running it was a lovely to be in and drive, if very scruffy on the outside, old barge. When the fuel pump packed in it was absolutely worth throwing £80 at a specific easy fixed fault. When it then didn't work (ignoring the now cracked fuel rail) it became one of a hundred things that you can only really rule out by replacing random parts and hoping you get the right one sooner rather than later. At the end of the day it's a £450 quid runaround that's seen better days and is by no means rare or mint and I don't have the time or money to save what is, realistically, just an old car.

If someone has one and needs an interior then it's got one. There are doubtless lots of other bits on it that work fine, and if it could be useful I'd rather that than it rust in a heap. Heaven knows someone with the mechanical knowledge and time, and a hefty wallet to sort the outside, could even fix it and make it lovely. Or you could just buy one already in that condition for half as much.

If you stand and literally pour petrol into the injector holes she'll start and run fine - until you stop pouring. The various xj40 forums were at a loss. When it seems so close to being a running barge again it pains me to admit defeat, but there comes a time when you need to know when to stop playing autoshite roulette and this is my time with this car.

I'm not holding anyone to ransom or trying to threaten a sale out of folk, I just thought I'd see if it might be useful to someone before I simply bin it. If nobody can use it that's fine, at least nobody will see it in the scrappies and moan they never got the chance to do x, y or z with it.

bypass all the shite and bung a set of twin carbs on it :) Problem solved! its a bit tatty yeah but to me for a 20 year old car its still quite tidy and the overall impression is good - the dink on the bonnet being the worst part.

It is what it is , I hope someone takes it on.
