If I remember correctly, these could be activated from the driver's seat, so if the wheels started to spin, the driver could easily get sand on the wheels and gain traction. Not a problem if you use a bit of Vaseline on the cap and connections.

Apart from a Volvo Amazon (?) not a foreign car in sight - and not a hatchback.

Compared to what was happening in Europe most of these old dinosaurs were on borrowed time once imports took off and people could buy the kind of cars they wanted rather than what they were given by out of touch British manufacturers.
