Hello - so moved to see this photo of my grandfather. He entered Daimler as a apprentee in 1911, at the age of 16, and spent his career in Coventry - Radford, after a 3 year interruption as a soldier during WWI, until his retirement in 1963. He is remembered for being the Engineering team leader of the Scout light armoured vehicle produced as from 1939.

I'd love a copy of this photo to share with my father who is 93, if you have it in better quality. Thanks for the sharing. Mike.

Alas the post is from 2018. I can't remember where the photo was on the web. Try the search engines.

Quick guess without checking anything out,

starting bottom left,

- Ford Galaxie from around 1966, Mk2 Tina, Austin A55 van, Mk2 Escort, Bedford?

Maxi, Opel or German Ford thing, early 68/69ish  Chevy Camaro with a stripe, FB Victor, possibly Austin A40 van or maybe SAAB estate?, far right too blurry,

Maxi middle left,

very blurry top lefy has  Landy, maybe a Datsun, bus (I don't know buses), maybe white Mk1 Escort,

possibly Range Rover top right, and maybe another Maxi or Fiat 124.

Many guesses, room for improvement, other opinions welcome, etc  Any background info on pic?, it's an interesting mix with the American cars.

What's the round thing on the lower windscreen passenger side?  Saw one of these on another late 60s pic recently but couldn't make it out.  Little cooling fan stuck to the screen?  Don't know, it's not an accessory I've seen before.

Search for the Ship L4062 in google and it makes a good read, it is actually a landing craft!

I used to have a copy of this on the wall next to my desk.  Used to look at it when I felt shit.  As in 'things can only get better, what's the plan of action?'.

it's a searchlight - operate from inside the car, read the roadsigns etc.

It's from here; the trawler in front of the Maxi appears to have a FR code which means it's registered in Fraserburgh, but the location does not seem to be Fraserburgh unless a lot of remodelling has happened between then(1970 ish?) and now. There's another fishing boat with a register code in the foreground but I can't make out what it is; the port of registry might give a general area to look for likely harbours on google maps.

The truck is a Bedford RL, the bus is a coach and has a Plaxton Panorama Elite II body. Cannot identify what chassis though.

Yup - the car that started the Korean invasion of the UK - the Hyundai Pony. The first ones were imported into the UK in 1982. I guess the photo is celebrating the import of the first batch, the chap at the front certainly seems excited.

I think that would be the updated pony , did the first not have twin headlights?

Well this has led me down a rabbits warren. There seems to be a difference of opinion on the t'interweb.

You're right, the mk1 had twin headlights and the mk2 square ones. Now some sources say that a very small amount of mk1's came into the UK in 1981, as per the advert. But other sources say that the first ones into the UK were mk2's, as per the photo, brought in in 1982.

I wonder if the mk1's were to test the water, presumably successfully, and the mk2's were then brought in in bulk, as per the photo and the happy importer?

Not sure if anyone else has already answered this but in case they haven't the mystery object is a Helphos (can't remember the correct spelling). It is a search light which was suction fitted to the inside of the windscreen. The navigator could direct the beam and it had an on/off rocker switch on the back.

It was great for lighting up signposts etc. when you weren't sure where you were - which was most the time when I was navigating rallies.

There are currently four for sale on ebay if you want a more detailed look.
