Beloy-St.Leonard (France) An unusual sight. Abbé Gavois is raising money to erect a statue in honour of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of motorists. With a 37-year-old vehicle that can reach 12 km per hour, he travels around the country and his prehistoric car has already covered more than 300,000 km. The car has a canvas hood and a wicker trunk on the back. February 1928.

The last car is a 1934 Buick - straight 8 5.4 litres.

The BGC registration plate is SW London - the car will have been sold new by Lendrum & Hartman Ltd - sole UK concessionaires of Buick between 1919 and 1968.

It became the most prestigious car dealership in the country after selling a closed Buick in 1935 to the Prince of Wales, who became King Edward VIII the following year before his abdication.

Only a small number of these hyper-prestigious cars of different body types were sold to the haute- monde and this is one of them.

Ownership can probably be traced - with luck the car survives.

All these were put together in Canada by GM which made them acceptable to British society figures as they were Empire made.

Magnificent thing.

A little off topic, but I've often wondered when the importing of right hand drive U.S.A. cars into the U.K. ended. Old copies of Autocar et al mention them quite a lot, so the manufacturers were prepared to convert them to right hand drive & sell them here.  I wonder when and why this stopped.

Ford were still doing it in the early 80s.

Oct 1980 UK brochure

I had the Ford brochures from around this time. They also had the Mercury Monarch Ghia with a velour interior and a 302. At that time a Capri 3-litre Ghia was just under £7000.

Do you know if rhd conversion was by a chain and sprocket behind the dashboard or something else? Am not sure how they would have changed the dashboard to rhd as haven't seen pics.

The Mustang 3 was a good looking car, reminds me of early 80s Toyota Celica. A few years ago someone on here had a black Mustang '2' 302 which she imported (Sam?).  She stopped posting, wonder what happened there and how things are going. There were loads of posts and updates which were all really interesting.
