I can see  1x Renault,  3xVW (two of them being Beetles) and one Simca.  What is your sixth?  There's something which looks a bit Bond Equipe to me, but could be an Opel. My eyes hurt 😀.

Two Simcas, fourth row, between the mini and the MGB Roadster, that's without looking closely (yes it's a Bond).

It now looks like this.

No wonder you can never find a parking space in London - disgraceful use of a car park.

I think that is the designer Tom Karen getting out of the car. It's at some Reliant dealership given the three other R' cars in view?

FRE518K=FREAK not deliberate I'm sure.

Carpark porn.

Strange lack of Escorts, in that first car park there are , I think , 23 Cortinas, 5 Consul/Granadas but only 2 Escorts. There’s more XJ6s, Beetles and Moggies. And what’s that thing with the square black roof behind the 144 and in front of the Viva ?

I think it depends on the car park. There are quite a lot of 'middle-class' and 'upper middle class' family size vehicles there - cars of the well off and some more unusual and 'trendy' cars like the DS and Reliant that appealed to those with money.

What you drove in the 1970's was still very much a class thing - so no Escrots is in a way understandable - they were more a 'working-class' car for better or worse - and not necessarily seen as a family car.

My hunch is that is an airport car park -so really it is a snapshot of what the comfortably off were driving in the 70's - the kind of people who could afford to fly and afford to park.

Most of the cars in the picture are fairly new at the time - the only real old stager is the Austin/Wolseley 110 - but my recollection is that they were well-liked and people tended to hang on to them.

I think so too - you'd consider yourself ultra-cool to be driving one of these in the 70's. The kind of car driven by graphic designers and university lectures etc etc.

Yes, it’s obvious now!  Never occurred to me , especially as I’d never seen one in real life until I was nearly 50 years old in St Tropez.  Not many around in Wales in the 70’s!

  1.  Skoda
  2.  What is that?
  3. 3What is that?
  4. BMW
  5. Heald van/estate?
  6. Reliant 3 wheeler?
  7. Anglia poverty spec.

Some of those cars would be considered an argument against your reasoning.

Being an  car park next to the airport I expect that some of the vehicles belong to cabin crew.

3 looks like a 4 door small Triumph, possibly a Dolomite. 2 might be a Lancia?

Or possibly ground staff. Though some people do drive cars completely out of character 😏

I think 2 is a Stag and 3 a Triumph 2000/2500?

The Anglia doesn’t look too poverty spec to me.

A great picture with some great cars in it. If only modern cars were as interesting today.

2. may be the only Japanese interloper here - a 240 Cedric or similar?

3. Is possibly a little small for a Triumph 2000 - how about a 1500?

It has the grill of the standard (lowest trim of 3 levels)

The differences can be seen here.
