This is for sale by a friend in Malvern.  They're looking for about £400.  Needs "a bit of work", but I'll ask for more info - or messages can be passed on.

That's a tidy looking one,  the few survivors the roads around here are looking rather tired.

What kind of work is needed... rot, electrons or oily bits?

That looks lovely, lots of nice little extras on it and surprisingly unfrilly for a later reg.  I've promised myself another Mk2 Polo one day, but not today.

We have an answer!

"Well as far as I know, no significant rust, spotted a tiny bit on one wheel arch that's all. Nothing wrong at all before it was put in storage so we were told. Was a family car being saved for a daughter learning to drive. Just like us... So just what may have deteriorated due to 9 years out of action. We charged the battery up last week again, it starts easily but seemed to have a problem ticking over without lots of encouragement. My father in law said 10 mins with a brick on the accelerator solved it. When we first had it Sean, his dad and Charlie replaced the brakes as their first job. Nothing else done to it by us. He is welcome to come and look anytime. Have not got around to advertising anywhere else yet."

Iffy tickover until warm is usually that carb seat seal.  It's about a £5 part and a five minute job to resolve.  The rubber on the seal cracks allowing air in when cold, once it's warmed up the crack seals and it works as normal.  Other than that, a 9 year lay up is likely going to see a vacuum hose perished/split and possible a fuel line too in the engine bay.  Give the brake lines a look too, if they're still the originals you might find the driver's side towards the rear has corroded through.

Excellent ! A marvellous reminder of that bygone era when Polos were dependably miserable transport for old ladies !

Does it feature 1050cc power* ?

Nice!  I'm fond of these, having owned a couple in my yoof.  Felt much more solid than the Metro the first one replaced: these were the days when VW built their reputation for screwing cars together better than their competitors.

Oi, are you calling my 20-year-old self an old lady?  :-D

I used to know a girl who had a Polo Classic (the one with a big boot.  The car, not the girl) and even with its 1050cc it would sing its heart out at nearly 90 on the motorway.  The car, not the girl again.

My ma had a Polo C, her first new car of ever. It seemed a world away from her Sunbeam, pure luxury.

I've made it a rule for myself that I will never own the same model of car twice. I've been offered first refusal on my old '90 Ranger and I will snap it up as soon as possible.
