MoT to 20ish August, tax to 30^th October, 74,000 miles.  I’ve done about 4,000 mostly reliable miles in it, and despite being perfectly useable there’s something amiss with the engine be it piston slap, camshaft wear or whatever (hence the price).  It could do someone a nice little runabout or station car, but long journeys are a bit of a drag due to the clatter. Not sure if it’s about to implode but I just keep driving it!

 

Since last September I’ve put on a new rear exhaust (chrome trims still present), serviced, valve clearances done, and a new handbrake cable and rear pads.  It needs atleast one tyre as the front NS has bulges in the outer wall.  I only noticed this after a 500 mile round trip to Devon last month…

 

Here’s some old rubbish photos.  Since these I’ve tidied up the bumpers and it looks pretty decent, interior is nice too even if Gary Cox takes exception to the blueness of it!  Arches have some grot but as we know, they all do that.  No massive gaping holes so is presentable enough.

 

Would rather not deal with mong public obviously, but might try it on gumtree for £250.

Went shopping in this tonight, and got an old giffer in the car park comment how nice it looks. I've seen him around and he drives a mint Saab 900 classic with those shiny type hubcaps. I said I'm selling but he's already got four cars he doesn't need.

 

Shame I can't keep it as it is quite agreeable to pottle around town in.

The noisy engine would drive you mad Mo! That's partly why I took the Cavalier and not this to Shitefest.

Is there such a thing as a 216 GSi with the 130BHP reliable* Honda engine?

 

How hard would it be to reverse engineer this with 218 TD bits and stick an XUD9TE in?

I think I got muddled anyway. Think the GSi had become a 420 by then anyway.

 

I've seen XUD BXs converted from auto to manual. In theory, upgrading to the blown 1.9 shouldn't be too tricky I guess. Biggest issue with stuffing it into a BX is the hydraulic pump drive - not applicable here.

Christ knows what Rover were up to with the model designations. It should have worked the other way around - 416 GSi then 420 GTi - as the latter was obviously more deserving of the title. But then it was the same time as you could get a Montego GTi, so maybe they had loads of badges left over!

This is what I'm hoping actually, that someone will buy it and put a decent engine in as the rest is 'too good to break'. But Gary Cox has shown interest as he may need an emergency car after his Escort got knicked, so he gets first dibs.

Don't keep it on my account, as I'll need to get the Escort back, discuss it with my friend, etc before I can even decide so if anyone wants it and can commit and collect sooner let them have it.

 

The Escort 'might' be fine (unlikely) and even if* it isn't he might prefer to take the Micra on for a bit. He's back on Monday and we'll get the Escort back and make a decision at some point this week. Will let you know ASAP obvs.

This might sound patronising but, have you changed the oil recently?  Our 216 cabrio (same GTI engine) was getting very rattly and I thought it was on its last legs, hence the purchase of the replacement engine.  However, a change to good quality, fresh oil with a decent filter (Unipart I think) quietened it down dramatically.

Done the oil twice plus an engine flush, and after the second change it was fine for about 20 seconds and then went back to normal. I thought it may be oil starvation but mechanic said the oil pump is working fine.

I've never seen one with such a blue interior. As any fool know, blue insides are the bollocks so someone must save this, it's the law.

I was being a bit jesty with the 20/50 comment. Might work, or it'll blow up the oil pump. One of the two! What is the recommended viscosity? There's usually a crossover point between different types. A thicker oil may work. My 2CV is certainly quieter with 20/50 in it, but it's not a good idea to use it in winter as it's too gloopy and affects cold starting.

10/40 I think. I'd be tempted to try anything just to shut it up, but these engines might be picky buggers in terms of what oil they like. Probably won't get around to it TBH as my interest in this one has gone now the 220 is pending!
