Guest Breadvan72 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 WTF is it with Rover 75s? I am seeing them EVERYWHERES at the moment. All mega shiney. Mostly driven by direct from Central Casting giffers, but sometimes by younger dudes. Shiters, maybe? Unlikely, as no shiter would have a car so clean.
320touring Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I reckon its because you crave something even more shite than a Lancia;-) I'd likely not have one do to headlight bulb replacement issues Talbotman 1
Guest Breadvan72 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 You should try replacing the headlight bulb on an Alfa 156. You need an advanced fricken degree in fricking about and swearing. I don't care if it was fucking Pininfarina himself; the bloke who designed the headlamp bulb fixing was a cunt. privatewire 1
Bren Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Vectra diesel PITA also. To do o/s you have to remove air box. As for 75's probably people discovering what a bargain they are.
Taff Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I can see two from where I am sitting, in McDonalds in Bridgend. Living the dream today, alright eddyramrod and Junkman 2
Lukas Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I guess, it´s all nostalgic because Rover = british car industry = dead.
CortinaDave Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 They're hardy long lived cars and offer a lot for little cash at the moment . Seem to be able to stand a fair bit of neglect too. I didn't find the headlight bulb too difficult on mine... I've had worse! The cougar I had was a bloody nightmare.
Des Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Considering the rep the company had for building crap, and a near decade since they folded, there's an awful lot of their wares still roving. laser wheels, beko1987, scruff and 5 others 8
mercrocker Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Its the usual syndrome - the only good British car is a dead one. We are good at looking back! Junkman and Twiggy 2
STUNO Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I think the Rover 75 was actually 0ne of the most successful car of the 90's It gave people a good distinctive design, carried a very well respected name and was a comfortable long-range cruiser as well. It has now proved it's longivety by becoming the car to own. In this part of the world they are still sought after and still command high prices. It was poor management that killed them, not poor design (apart from head gaskets) Vince70, Paul Dupart and In The Pit 3
CortinaDave Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I wonder how much longer we'll keep seeing MG Rovers on the roads in strong numbers though. The latest "where the hell did they all go" car has to be the Escort. All of a sudden I'm seeing only the occasional one In The Pit, Paul Dupart, beko1987 and 1 other 4
EssDeeWon Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Sierra's almost vanished overnight a few years ago too. I think the 75 will be like the SD1, in 15 years a few old rotters will remain along with a few tidy ones but values will still be on their arse, and there will be numerous tales from blokes who 'used to have one 20 years ago' but it wasnt that good so I weighed it in etc etc.. beko1987 1
Jim Bell Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 If 75 values keep dropping like DVD sales, we might all end up with one. Which would be terrible* eddyramrod 1
Spiny Norman Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 They look good, drive well and are stupid cheap.A grand buys one of the best and if you're willing to take the OMGHGF risks/jibes on the chin I reckon they represent good value.
vulgalour Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Stop telling me the 75 is a good car to have. I've wanted a 75 since they were released and this isn't helping. eddyramrod, EssDeeWon and alf892 3
320touring Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Stop telling me the 75 is a good car to have. I've wanted a 75 since they were released and this isn't helping.I'd rather have the princess:)
Jim Bell Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 A 75 is on my list of shite to shovel. Once they hit rock bottom, I'll be unable to resist. I'm sure there's a TELL ME ABOUT ROVER 75s thread somewhere. Must dig it up to boost mojo further.
Junkman Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 There is that V8 version, you know. 4.6 litres of raw, septic NASCAR power and sound. One of them is currently advertised for three-and-a-half bags, you know. The only cheaper ticket to V8 waftbargetasticness is a LS 400, which neither has the panache, nor the class, nor the style, of the British offering.Hence it would be the more sensible buy, but where is the romance in that? Jim Bell Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321398778691 Maybe they have already hit rock bottom?! £350 2.5 giffer anyone?
meshking Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 <cough> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201085386083 this may or may not be nestling in my watch list </cough> eddyramrod 1
Junkman Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 The 2.5s seem to be the cheapest of the bunch. Maybe because of the OMGROADFUNDTAX post 2001s command? Speaking of watchlists, this somehow made it onto mine, because it has seats covered with an acceptable material: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-75-2-5-V6-auto-Club-SE-/181229234733 eddyramrod 1
CortinaDave Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 that 2.5 is cheap as chips. at £350 its stupid to be picky, but on the V6 id hold out for one with the leather, cruise control, auto dim mirror and telly in the dash etc. Its not going to cost you any more so you may as well. Rover 75s are many things but the seller is pushing it a bit to say the 2.5 Auto is "very economical"
Jim Bell Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Much happy amazing value to be had it seems. Anyone know which omghgfbbq engines to avoid? Can't seem to find an advice thread.

XJ8, S-Type,A8, 740, S Class all available in V8 ( and V12) flavours for £500 upwards. Admittedly the Teutons share the Lexus' style shortcomings but the Coventry pair are amazing bargains. As a Rover man ,you may see them as a bit nouveau and arriviste, indeed you may agree with whoever coined the phrase 'Wardour St. Bentley ' in the 1950's.In that case I'd point you at another sub £1,000 V8 300bhp product of Motown that's readily available in the body shell the General intended and rhd........ The Cadillac STS! Junkman 1

Spiny Norman Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 It's the engine choice that lets these down IMO.The 1.8 in either guise is far too slow for such a big heavy car and is as susceptible to OMGHGF as every other K series and I don't care what anyone says. The V6s aren't great engines and as far as I can make out are almost as prone to HGF as the 4 pots. I've also heard stories of the rear bank of cylinders being all but inaccessible and that there are probably V6 75s out there still running 3 of the plugs that were put in at the factory 15 years ago.The diseasel is probably the sensible one to go for, much as I love the idea of a V8 they're far too dear for shiteists and if I was going to spend that money running a car it would be a V8 Jag or a Merc.I'd really like an MG ZT and even with the engine of doom I may yet be tempted by one as a throw away banger.
