Dash Cams

There was a topic in here recently about Dash Cams... Which I now can't find - who's got one... And is it any good ?

Seems to be a load of them on eBay around the 20 notes mark but I'd rather get one a shiter has already used and knows is half decent.

This is the one I bought. Excellent picture quality and very good at night. £32 including postage. Very good value I reckon...

Matt uses his i-phone and a little iphone holder thing that sticks to the window. The app is "car camera" or something like that. We have talked about fitting a permanent one though as I am too poor to have an i-phone so am without a dash cam if driving alone.

i just ordered one of these

we'll see how it goes

I bought another design from Amazon last year but half of the time something interesting would happen but the video would be missing when you went to look for it, and then it locked up completely

also I wanted something much smaller

I have recently bought the pictured one and its decent.

On the down-side, it took a fooking age to arrive from China and its mardy about what type of SD card it likes...lower speed stuff tends to freeze it up, so needs class10 or better. The instructions are hilariously bad chinglish, but its actually pretty simple and intuitive to figure out.

Pictures quality is outstanding for the price though, even at night.

I reckon I will buy a couple more to fit out the whole fleet rather than mess about swapping it between cars.

Might be better to recycle an old android phone that you have lying around and buy a cheapo windscreen mount on eBay.

You'll certainly get better resolution out of it I suspect?

I'm still using my Mobius Action Camera, though I rarely use it as an actual dash cam. It can be configured as such though, and you can even fit a remote lens so you can have it permanently wired in. Not suitable for 99% of Autoshiters though, as we change vehicle so often/own a fleet.

How do these work then? Do they take a rolling 2 min video until you hit SAVE or a shock causes it to save or something?

Caught this with the Drift HD I use on my bike:

Giffer-driven Polo didn't stop and unfortunately the number plate is illegible, despite my camera supposedly being 1080p.  Skoda driver called the police but they didn't seem interested.

Here's a sample of footage from my camera. Pretty good for the money, I'd say...

What is the level crossing and signal box?

Yes, exactly, or at least that's what mine does.

It's quite a bit longer than two minutes though; the length of time you get depends on the size of your memory card.

It's Louth. It was converted to a home a few years ago.

Anyone know what's a good free app to use for this?

I just got a mount and charger for my phone and fancy giving it a shot.

Mine has the option of 3 mins, 5 mins, 10 mins or continuous. Obviously the amount of short vids recorded until the loop starts again is down to the size of the micro SD card. I worked out the one I have will store about 2 hours worth. You can have it stop on impact but I haven't set this as the aftermath of any 'incident' can be worth recording, just hope I might be in a fit state to switch it off manually within 2 hours !!

Tim, if you want to pop into the shop and ask for Ian in the workshop you can borrow mine for a few days 'evaluation', it's in the car all the time even though it was in the glovebox for 2 weeks when I forgot about it .

Lots of them to try - here's a random option to test out for free:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dailyroads.v

Acting as a car blackbox, dash cam or auto DVR, DailyRoads Voyager continuously records videos and captures photos during your journeys. The app automatically records everything, but only important events are retained for future reference or as evidence. You get to choose what to keep, simply by touching the screen, even while you drive.

Key features:

- Continuous video recording, with user-defined length and video quality; sound can be included

- User-defined storage space on the SD card with cyclic recording; i.e. the card never fills up

- One-touch video retention allows you to keep video files for interesting road events during the whole journey

- Auto retain video upon sudden shock (e.g. accident); configurable g-force sensitivity

- Automatically capture photos at user-defined intervals and resolutions; great for time-lapse photography

- Background video/photo capture, with optional buttons over other applications

- Auto start and shutdown based on car dock detection and related options

- Videos/photos are timestamped & geotagged

- Automatically determine street address of retained videos/photos

- Display videos/photos location on a map

- Display speed, elevation, timestamp and GPS coordinates on videos/photos

- Option to change speed units (km/h, mph) and date format

- GPS can be disabled to reduce power consumption

- Brightness adjustment option allows less distraction when driving at night

- Built-in file manager, video/photo browser

- Add title/description/bookmark to files

- Upload files to DailyRoads.com

- App2SD

This is a free application with some ads. Enjoy and have a safe journey!

Version 4.0 includes ads now, but they are disabled after any donation or purchase within the app. If you have donated before this version, please send a mail to [email protected] so we can disable ads for you. Thanks again for all the donations!

Well I've tested a couple of dashcam programs to date.

First one was "Daily Roads" and the other was "AutoGuard".

There should be a sample of the Auto Guard video below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gypEOoreGY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

They block things like Youtube at work, so I've had to email myself a link from home to my work account.

If it does not work it will be corrected later on tonight hopefully...

From looking at the phone recordings I can certainly see that my mount isn't nearly rigid enough and I'm planning to get a piece of foam to place underneath the mount to reduce vibration.

This is a £2.99 mount from B&M with the crocodile jaw style of clamp.

I've just ordered a Dash Cam for my Nissan of Doom. It's now on it's way from Hong Kong...I hope.

Had mine for a while now and zero real complaints. My only minor niggle is the fisheye style lense gives a slightly distorted view of reality. The couple of near misses I have caught on cam have looked relatively tame when viewed due to distortion of distances.

Does anyone have a recommendation for software to use to cut out clip sections and edit together? Preferably one with a Fischer Price interface style so that a doofus like me can understand it? I downloaded a couple to try but couldnt understand anything and Steven Spielberg wouldnt return my calls asking for help.
