I think we should lobby the EU to make SERCKs compulsory across the whole of the continent.

'Most British motorists want British number plates - not European ones.'

Errrr - all British motorists have European number plates. Or since when is the UK not in Europe?

However, unified numberplates throughout the EU will save us from being nuked in the upcoming USA vs. Russia war.

They will also help to reduce the world population to a sustainable level.

Oh. Wait...

I like to have the little Euro flag / GB symbol on my plates - for the simple reason that is saves sticking on a GB sticker when going on a booze cruise.

In all seriousness we should scrap age plates since they serve no purpos other than concentrate new car sales at 2 points in the year. Stamped plates would be harder to forge and instantly stop illegal spacing or fonts

I clicked on the link & then read the article about some bird in a bikini doing a handstand, I then forgot why all the fuss about EU number plates  :)

The Daily Mail make it up as they go along, most of the stuff they print might have a grain of truth somewhere deep down in it but its really written just to get their readers all worked up and shouty.

Despite this being untrue, tbh if they wanted to replace the 'British'  plate with an 'EU' one then I personally couldn't give a toss. Its just a collection of letters and numbers and means nothing to me.

I'd quite like it if we could lose front plates like the US. Actually, I'd really like it if the whole registration/plate/tax/whatever system was like the US. But not the insurance.

But with every other bit of number plate legislation eg. Change from white on black to black on white/yellow, change of font etc. the legislation has never been made retrospective.

Car registered 'A1' made to have a post 2001 font in black letters on white with a euro star at the side?

Its bollocks.

Actually, that's not quite true. It's technically illegal for me to fit replacement number plates to my 2CV that are the same font as the ones it wore originally back in 1986. Pre-1973 plates seem exempt from this, but I'm not sure they were when the law first changed.

two of my 1950s cars are still running on their original but tatty pressed ally plates and both can legally be on the road with motorcycle size plates to the rear only with no front number plate.

Just out of interest, when did the front plate become law in the UK? I've never really seen the point of it tbh (other than benefiting ANPR cameras), as there can't be that many situations where you really need to make a note of the reg as a car is coming towards you?

Is that really true?

My point was that in 2001, when the updated font was introduced, you didn't have to run out and buy new plates for it.

Mrs thestag hangs on every word in the mail, or pissboiler as it is better know in chez stag.

She then tried to engage me in conversation over something farcically controversial and gets all eggy on me when i take the piss.

One hack amanda platell is particularly filled with hatred for anyone who is not her, and can make most entertaining reading.

Website comments are for piss taking :-)

My number plates sport a Cornish flag (white cross on a black background) and the word "Kernow" below. For the benefit of those non-Cornish who inhabit this forum, the Cornish flag is the flag of St. Piran & "Kernow" is Cornish for "Cornwall". This saves me the bother of adding a "Cornwall" sticker to my car when I venture over the Tamar Bridge (=England)

As from yesterday Cornwall & the Cornish people are a "registered minority" although what this means to the Cornish is debatable.....

During the last few months while the main railway line to Cornwall was cut at Dawlish the Cornish papers had the following headline: "Railway severed at Dawlish; England cut off"-AMAZING!!!

Only a few states have no front plates. The point of the United States is that they are United but separate States.

Just like Europe.

I wonder if there are equivalent 'local' papers in individual states that regularly run headlines like "OMG WASHINGTON B*****DS ARE ALLOWING MEXICANS TO GIVE US ALL CANCER!!11!!!!"

Yeah, but you need some proper font plates anyway. I'm sorry, Elly looks lovely but those modern plates look naff. The ones I had made for the Maestro by DMB graphics are near-perfect replicas of the originals, and even include the British Standard number! You can get a basic pair of the correct ones off Ebay for £17. Go on.

Nah, that's what is regularly written on the front page of the Washington Post. Lately, they frequently replace "Mexicans" with "Muslims" though, and the newest is "Russians".

Hard to believe that, what with having unified number plates and such stuff.

Was funny though, last time I was over there and people started to go on about those "eerleegil eemigrans" and I said "yep, them damn Canadians" and everyone looked at me as if I had said something wrong.

Unlikely - half of them don't even know where their own state is on the map of the USA, let alone where DC is.
