Parts hoarding

As the title says do any of you hoard parts?

All my cars aren't that bad but are starting to need wings, bumpers and stuff like that. Eventually they might needs bonnets, boots and God only knows what (already had the mk1 crashed into) at the moment parts for fiestas and full cars are on eBay all the time, so buy now, when I don't have much money, or wait as being ford's it's not like there won't be parts for years to come.

I still have a case full of NOS yank spares and I don't have the heart to take them to the tip.

Free to any yank owner prepared to pick it up.

Apart from that, it's great fun to go to autojumbles and buy parts for cars one doesn't own.

i have hardly any. Room for any more, that is.

You never know when you will need one front headrest from a mk4 escort 1.4L.

Or a CX's subframes and turbo-dizzle engine and box. Or the rest of it which wasn't body.

Yes. For my three main vehicles parts supply is pretty poor, at least for mechanical bits. The BX is probably best served, but I have a few bargain parts on the shelf, and hard to find bits from spares cars over the years. Plus all the service items, usually bought in bulk and replenished when needs be, works out cheaper that way.

You might think the Stellar would be the worst to find bits for, but most things underneath are Mk4/5 Cortina so not too difficult yet. I have a decent selection of panels/glass/mirrors/lights/switches etc, as I really think I'd be lucky to get them nowadays!

The van is actually the hardest for non-service items, as late last year VW dealers stopped listing any parts for it. If you know the part number, and it's shared with other VWs they may still be able to get hold of it but if not you're out of luck. They used to be able to check stock at other dealers, but that all stopped too. No model specific specialists, so it's eBay or VW Classic Parts over in Germany, again if you know the part number. Hence I'm building up a stock of parts but with it not being an everyday vehicle, the lack of parts on the shelf isn't that big a deal.

With the Discovery I have an entire spares car, plus places like Rimmers so no worries at all!

Or K'N filters for a KH250.

Or 4 Sierra 5 spoke 'GT' alloys.

Or 5 1991 Jetta Steels with nearly new tyres. And Bolts. And Wheel garnishs.

Oh dear..

Thats just reminded me i have 3/4 of an Audi 100 in the garage and Volksy has sold Auschwitz on.

Does anyone have a 1979-81 Saab 900 EMS that needs new wheels, lights, instrument panel and front brake pads? I may find buying one an easier solution.

Guilty as charged. I have a load of Renault 4 stuff. Mainly stuff I'll use but theres a fair bit of stuff that needs sorting / binning as I'll probably never use it.

I didn't think I hoarded parts until it became necessary to buy a shed to keep them in. It's almost all Volvo too.

I have a few parts I probably won't ever need,  until I have a clear out & throw them away

Have boxes full of stuff (all organised though) and about 8 sets of wheels. They all need to go. I have 'rare' things like Vauxhall bits that only came on a few models, but need some time to go through the lot to put on eBay. I'm never going to use any of it, especially the wheels and they take up so much space.

Which is why we never dare chuck stuff, until it threatens to eat us alive.

Yep I hoard parts, the way old Ford tax is going I'm glad I do it because it saves me alot of cash

I have owned my Vauxhall Viva since 1984.  I broke more than a few in the 80s and still have some of the parts.

I have a pair of front wings, door skins, many other parts stashed away.

I also have parts for my Mk3 Astra, all sorts.  I own a Mk1 Sierra but have sold many of my Sierra parts.

Mad?  Probably.  But relatively organised, i hope!

There are no spares in my garage*.

*(they're in the attic of the barn and in the store room)

When I had a warehouse full of cars, the dexi racking was ten feet high and six bays wide, stuffed full of everything ...

My garage doubles as a spares department for the local ARG/Rover Group/MG Rover dealer

You cant get to the back wall due to all the gear in there, It's waist deep. Will have to get a picture and tag it onto the thread next time I go up there.

Ive noted that being into old motahs and hoarding pretty much goes hand in hand such that many properly none car people i know of quickly assume that i live life going on car parts missions and hoard them in various inappropriate locations in the house without much remorse to convention which is partly true.

Eventually i hope to clear the decks of the pointless chaff parts one day to leave the properly unobtainium and a cabinet of engineering gear like circlips, o-rings,washers,gasket paper, fuel pipe and all the rest of it that inevitably gets forgotten about untill desperately needed that moment when something that appears inconsequential but really isnt plings off forever into the grass/drain on a sunday afternoon

sometimes a good clearout can help the motivation greatly but rediscovering things can be a distraction to the main aim of thinning the collection ive found

Alfa Sud parts. In the Garage, the Attic and the Garage Attic. Oh, and the shed, and the back of the garage, and round the side of the house…..

I'm still thinking it's a good idea but what puts me off is I once saw a bloke on tele with more bits for his convertible minx that 20 people would ever need. I don't think I wouldn't know when to stop buying and I haven't got the space really....

Got shit loads of hoover and dyson parts to go through and bin/sell/keep.

Buggar all car stuff though

I hoarde stuff but I try to predict what I'll need in the future and often let stuff go for less than it's worth (if internet fora prices are any sort of guide).  I reckon I'd rather have money in my pocket than bits of crap cluttering up the place.  The fact that I have almost an entire spare car spread thinly around the house and gardens is neither here nor there.

I did find I have a special skill for hiding things too.  My old Polo was in bits being painted in the living room and I was told that it was a bit unsightly, could I make it more invisible before the friends came around for dinner.  Did I put it in the cellar?  No, I managed to hide all the body panels in the living room in such a way the guests didn't know.

I've got these two crappy old 2 door Mk1 Escort Mexicos in my garage. Been there since 1972 with barely any mileage on them, plus all the spares for them you could ever need. They just get in my way now to be honest, so they're being crushed in the morning.

^^^That's OK.....They will still buy them when they have been crushed.....

I have one of the largest collections of genuine new old stock Ford parts in the UK but it is par for the course given what I do for a living! Many of the parts I have are no longer available and worse still would have been scrapped had I not saved them. I do keep a fair stash of spares for my own vehicles and projects but most of what I have is offered for sale to fellow enthusiasts.

Really! You got the small center console for a mk2 Fiesta (the one that takes a radio)? Or the window rubber that fits the quarter lights I can't get them anywhere new!!!

I used to hoard but it just got stupid so I ended up selling anything rare/valuable and binning the rest. I have a former outside toilet (I do live in wales) that is full of most of a P6 3500s' component parts but those all came free with my p6 when I bought it and will probably end up being passed on.
