Get a cheap flight day trip (40 euro?),  not forgetting the world famous Karlsruhe Airport may be in a different country but is also quite close as it is not in Karlsruhe  and go see the bus and owner yourself, check the local scrappy for wheels and tires prices. Take a laptop/phone/tablet which can get Google Translate if you are not fluent in La Chod Garlic Franglais.  Then decide if it'll be an Autoshite Incontinent Collection or not.

Renting a transporter is a good idea, I would only need it for 48h max and i could stop worrying about the tyres and timing belt altogether. I will see how much the ferry cost is for one of those trucks.

I am maybe late to the party here, but this site....

http://www.quelpneu.com/

Is a comparison site of French online tyre suppliers, so you could find the cheapest and get them sent to the seller. I believe camskill will also send to EU from UK for a tenner per tyre or so, but generally its not worth it.

I would have a google snoop around the guys area to see if there is a wee garage somewhere - small local places are rarely part of the fitting network for the online suppliers, so you could get them done there, or at least have the knowledge as a standby if DIY fitting doesnt go to plan....You know how it is Boll, when it goes well its great, but when a bead refuses to split it can be a real pain in the chuff. I wouldnt fancy spending potentially a couple of hours faffing with reluctant old tyres and THEN starting a timing belt job. Maybe even tap them up for a price on doing the belt. What if you get there and its pissing down with rain?...running out of daylight, slinking off the find a hotel while covered in oil and tyre gunk, returning the next day and imposing on the seller some more. Also, what sort of area is he in? its nice to imagine swapping the belt on a sunny day in a nice area but if he is in some inner-city shitehole you might not want to be the crazy English guy with a bag full of nice tools scattered all over the ground while the local feral teenagers look on.

Unfortunately, its not exactly adjacent to me, as I would be happy to help with use of garage, tools, overnight stop or whatever. If anything ever catches your eye further south, then let me know. Albi / Castres area is no probs and as far as Toulouse / Beziers is do-able with a little notice.

eurotunnel = high roof van taller than 6ft - they dont care about length as long as theres no trailer

max 61 quid each ways depending on the time you go

It's a lovely idea to turn up with some belts and tyres and do it all on his driveway whilst he offers cheese and wine and his daughters, but in reality will it happen? Sods law says you'll need the one tool you left at home, or a bolt rounds off, or it's tipping it down with rain.

Get it back on a trailer and enjoy working on it in a more relaxed fashion. Instead of €200 worth of tyres to get it rolling, rent a trailer and bung some partworns on it back in the UK. Cost can't be that far off.

If you're going to make a holiday of it, visit the Cite de l'Automobile in Mulhouse. Formerly known as the Schlumpf Museum with all the Bugattis.

Don't your old dears live over in France Bo1? How hard would it be to get it to their place to fix it up or is that miles out of the way?

Why do you have to get involved in the pump timing when doing the belts on these? Can't you just leave the pulleys on the camshaft and just replace the belts?

Yeah, you can just leave the pulleys on as the IP is mounted on slotted holes to adjust the tension (no tensioner). So if you do that it must either be timed correctly, or a tooth (or more!) out. It's just that I was caught out first time I did the job by needing to replace the cam seal - marked the belt and pulley, popped the pulley off to find no sodding keyway!

Agreed that the more enjoyable way is probably to hire a trailer/transporter though...working under pressure takes all the fun out of a job, although makes for a more exciting collection thread ;-)

Not very exciting but I reckon you should lob it on the back of a trailer/A-frame and take it back to your Ma's or even back to England. The thing about a car thats been standing is that other componants will have deteriorated so whilst you might be able to sort out belts and waterpump, other stuff might hinder your progress such as fuel pump/expansion tank/deteriorated pipes etc....

Toulouse / Beziers is do-able with a little notice.

This is where I'm at so I can cover those.

All these ideas remind me of my Volvo collection story:

P1260145.jpg

I drove to Bolton in the BX14 to collect the ebay-won A-frame, then somewhere further south (Cheshire?) to the 850 seller's place as arranged.

Rang his number- he's still in that there London village. FFS

The keys and V5 were locked in his house.

All they tyres were flat but did hold air (ish) once pumped up.

Eventually seller's brother turns up, finds me the keys + logbook, then buggers off.

Flat battery, but it fired up with a jump from a neighbour's Audi.

The Volvo listing said "great condition, new MOT". Must have seen me coming.

Piss about hooking up the A-frame on the BX. It was the first time I'd used one.

Plug my trailer board in - only one bulb working. Cock. Re-built trailer board and the extension cord on the pavement. I'm looking like a right bloody amateur by this point.

Eventually set got it legal and set off, BX idling all the way to keep it riding nice.

Bit of a saga, and I'd only gone 50-odd miles for it. But that was plenty for my first go at A-framing, especially as it was the evening that hurricane Katia hit us in September '11. Quite a sphincter twitcher.

Nobody died - at least it went better than "Will's first A-framing adventure".

For max. points buy a VW LT 45 transporter off ebay and with it, collect Volvo.

Then sell transporter on, having exchanged engine spares as neccessary to benefit the Volvo.

If not, google pointed to this outfit. http://transporterhire.co.uk/transporter_hire_7.5t.php

(The rental for one day is £150 including insurance any miles travelled over 250 are charged at 15 pence per mile up to 600 miles and £1 per mile thereafter.)

OR just weigh it in. I bet you could score something with tax and test for scrap money, too. Load with barrels of veg oil for ultimate mingebaggery.

I used them for a 3.5t transporter - was fine and dandy.

That BX looks massive next to the 850, which looks 440-size. Always the case when moving something and you feel not too sure about the whole thing.

Looking forward to hearing more about the Volvo trip - this is a better read than any motoring rag.

Follow Hirsts plan but use the Seat Toledo and dump that over there, still a shame to see it scrap but it's the best of both worlds.
