Tell me about: Shite 4X4s

I've discounted Hiluxs themselves since TopGear Tax makes them "worth" a bazillion quid. I'll add a Surf option to my browsing though!

Cherokee? rot can be bad esp under rear seat area, diesel is the 4 headed monster & cramped inside. +1 for niva & SJ.

Sugga? Meets none of your requirements other than being a 4x4. But it looks nice, so there.

A Daihatsu Terios isn't a bad shout actually, although they are really really small. And bouncy.

Terioseseses seem to be over-valued for what they are, I think they have a persistent and loyal following among rural octogenarians.

Early RAV4s are better fun to drive than they have a right to be (especially in SWB flavour), but do like a drink. And they rust.

I do like the idea of something that the top comes off of. Preferably where it's meant to. Saves me chopping it in for an MX5 for winter.

Good call.

I was going to suggest as a joke the autoshite equivalent would be a chubby ginger lass in the back of a Vitara but I have a sneaking suspicion somewhere on the internet, that exists.

However, if you want to go offroading, there are exactly three possibilities:

Sod everything I wrote hitherto and be a real man. Buy this:

Then brush-paint it lilac and festoon it with flower and peace stickers.

End of.

Bonus: It's the only car of EVAH, in which you perceive the earth curvature when you look at your passenger.

Double cab pick ups are very handy. I had an old L200 for 6 years without any problems.

Beijing Jeeps are surprisingly good fun (there are a few in UK).

Someone said "don't" for a Shogun Pinin. What happen to these? Also, wasn't there a tiny sub 1 litre version of these? As Jimny's seem to be appreciating, I thought this may be a decent alternative.

Honda hrv has the same 4wd system as the crv. Be careful cos some were 2wd

+1 on the Maverick/Terrano.

The guy whose garage I take my cars to has a Terrano van as a works runabout/ parts collector/ tow car in dizzler flavour, and reckons it's (whisper it) better than the Range Rover Sport he also has in almost every respect.

If you're only wanting a bit of light off-roading ability though, would a normal car with 4x4 running gear not suffice? Subaru being the obvious answer here - but how about a Justy? Should be relatively cheap to run, I'd imagine.

Or how about straying further from the norm and finding something like a 4x4 Mk3 Cav? Probably harder to find than a Gary Glitter fan these days, but it would probably be the most Autoshite solution.

Either that, or a 4x4 Transit? - available from SWB low top, up to LWB high top minibus, I believe.

It really does depend on what sort of off-roading you want to do. Anything vaguely serious, and you really want a dual-range gearbox and decent ground clearance. This is where the Mavrano scores well. They actually are properly good in the rough stuff. I surprised many a Land Rover.

'Soft' roaders (Freelander included) usually lack low range, and even Subarus so equipped don't really have enough of a ratio drop to be worth it. Used to use low box on my Legacy purely because it sounded like a rally car - low gearing was also useful around town.

These are too expensive but they have shite appeal, especially in the UK where they look out of place.

I would like to try one, where else can I find a 4 litre pushrod straight six? (I can't afford a pre-war Alvis)

I know they are a bit Village People, but I am too old to care. And anyway, I live in a village.

I think I'd like to go playing at being an off roader although that idea may get consigned to the big heap of never-realised ideas. But I'll probably not worry too much about car based stuff right now.

(This will undoubtedly lead to me buying a lowered XR4x4 next week)

There was a Forester turbo went for £310 last night. Needed a helicoil on a plug 'ole though and in the 4 minutes left on the auction, I couldn't find out whether that was a DIY job to get the head off or a world of expensive pain.

Shall we do another OVROAD MONGFEST?  I might even turn up to this one.  I know that the Welsh fest could be a bit OVROAD, but there is the small issue of having to go to Wales.
