http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motoring/london-set-ban-older-private-petrol-and-diesel-cars

The Conservative mayor Boris Johnson, TfL and the Greater London Assembly are formulating the plan to combat low air quality.

London will take another step towards banning older diesel and petrol-powered private cars from the city centre when the proposed Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) is further discussed next week.

A second 'stakeholder' meeting is expected to reinforce a proposal to ban diesel cars that don’t meet EU6 emissions standards or petrols that don’t meet EU4 from the central Congestion Charge Zone.

the ban on pre-EU6 diesels  cars registered before 2014, and pre-EU4 petrols, as well as any registered before 2005  was put to an informal vote at the first stakeholder meet in November and won overwhelming support.[/qoute]

We're all doomed.

Thank the good Lord for that, never again will i have to drive a car into the shit hole.

Whilst I sympathise with the London haters (and having driven through the center of London once it is something I never hope to repeat ever again) the Boris Brigade are spreading, and it wont be long before the plum trouser wearing contingent decide that "Whats good enough for London is good enough for Bristol/Manchester/Leeds*" insert nearest large town

I'd love to see them try it in Belfast. Some petrol powered police vehicles would miss the cutoff by 20 years. Which means we couldn't even have our traditional Massive Riot®TM© about it.

Far from being a London hater I am often in London for work, smack bang central London and why anyone would choose to drive into zone 1 is mad, I just jump on the tube for a couple of quid. Many years since I've driven into town, and I think we are a long way off petrol and old diesels being banned, and certainly a very long time off this impacting any other cities. The thing about London politics is lots of things are discussed and voted on, few are implemented.

I live about 50 miles north of London and go in at least 2 or 3 times a week for work, sometimes every day,I love driving in Central London and since the Congestion Charge the centre is a more pleasant place, with more chance of finding parking and actually being able to get around. The tenner is annoying, but I just stick it on the bill.

This LEZ for cars is a whole new ball game though, presumably it will not get past the proposal stages,as there are an awful lot of people who live and work in London with older cars. I can't imagine many Firemen,Coppers or Nurses drive brand new EU compliant cars for example.

As for wanting to go to London, if you can tell me where else in the UK has the quantity and quality of restaurants, pubs, theatres etc Not to mention the museums , historic buildings and general tourist bollocks. Then I'll start going there, although the fact I can leave ,say, Covent Garden at 11and be home by midnight means I'm a bit spoilt.

I often drive into central London in the evenings for church meetings.   This is bad news.

I love my city, bite me bitches.

Cleaner air is nicer to breath granted and we always knew this would be on the cards but having already had to get shot of my DI transit with the associated financial and emotional pain it entailed the prospect of not being able to use any of my other vehicles is not one I would relish.

I'd be very surprised if this isn't put into motion in some shape or form with the current regs being tightened as there's a lot of weight behind it from a financial as well as green standpoint.

Personally if I go up town it mainly involves drinking so I use public transport, if it's for work or a other none drinking reasons then by motorcycle is the only way to get about in good time. I do go through town out of choice at the start and end of long journeys mainly to avoid the agony of the M25 though also because I like too. A late night/early doors dash around the city is also fun once in a while.

ppiI quite like London, am I the only one?

I quite like it (in short doses) but the idea of driving within the M25 fills me with dread. I'll happily turn my back on the motor car for any Capital trips.

As for restaurants, pubs, theatres etc. Sod that. I've got a nice local, with an Arts Centre in town. The Proclaimers played there last year. So there.

I will keep going there till they stop me.   Then they can stick it up their arse.   I am not buying anything that is fucking boris compliant.

I'm happy to visit the place, but would hate to live and/or work there.

No, London itself is fine, even if the locals think people from the North are odd for saying "hello" and chatting whilst on the tube.

Its driving through London I hate.

But then I hate driving through Manc these days too and I used to drive through the city every day for nearly 10 years.

Even Preston can be a PITA if you dont know exactly which lane you want to be in. I think many big towns are going the same way.

Does the Chinese by the pier still have pictures cut out of car brochures on the kitchen door? That place was the height of sophisticated dining when I was a kid.

I think measures such as this are important to keep the capital's roads clear for the wealthy, who have demonstrated that they are better than us in every way.

If someone needs to drive into London in their Bentley Continental Flying Spur (10mpg urban, 396g/km) to check on their abandoned mansions during their lunch hour from running some shit bank into the ground, then they shouldn't be impeded by some smog belching 2004 Polo (144g/km).

I love London, and Londoners, and always have a great time there. The idea of driving there fills me with dread, though. I did live in downtown Milan for a while, and drove there, but you need a different attitude. Once I figured out that trying to make sense of it is futile, it was fine. Just think "Fuck it" and go for it. Just like everyone else.

I love London, still work there, and only left cos of being skint last year after 29 years of loving the place.  I drove and drive there lots, and it's fine.  You just have to be decisive.

Cars are, however, wank for city centres, and I would ban all private cars from the centres of big cities, even though I love cars big stylee.   I would let buses and taxis in, and service vehicles, preferably all of those to be electric ones.

Cars are ace, but the internal combustion engine is, although a thing of joy, totally bad for us in many ways.    We should have replaced it by now, but haven't been arsed to do so for all sorts of complex reasons.

This is just another piece of legislation coming from the unelected fascist stealth Soviet in Brussels.

This is going on in all major EU cities and they must comply with this directive until 2015 whether the people want it, or not.

As usual, all across Europe this is sold to the people as if it was an idea of their local city council, so they don't wake up to the EUSSR monster,

that created itself, without ever asking them for permission.

Sleep well.

I used to get to London, Usually driving a coach, it was bloody nerve wracking hard work, you never got anywhere fast, getiing in and out was a pain in the arse.

The best thing ever was the LEZ thing cause we no longer got sent there.

Posted

Sad to see so much kapital hate. I love London and have no problems driving there or indeed anywhere within the M25, the CC and I guess the LEZ have made things much better in my opinion. In fact Leicester, our closest city which I have the misfortune to regularly drive through, is much worse.

It's not the end of shitters in the capital anyway, it says the L2B would be effected but knowing how many toffs and politicians have older tackle, historic stuff will I assume still be exempt. FBHVC will be on this pronto.

You'll have to just buy a proper motor car... or a shit old Land Rover like me.

I have to say I thoroughly dislike driving in London, as I always manage to get lost, even with a satnav.  Having said that, I don't mind driving in central London as much as I know my way around a bit and there's also lots of landmarks to look at - but it's still not something I would ordinarily do, it only happens when I pick up a vehicle from the Big Smoke.

I'm not sure how far this is going to get - I think it's been pushed up the agenda by the EU moaning at us about our air quality, but hopefully that'll go quiet again soon as they'll find something else to bemoan and local pollution will be put on the back burner.

On a positive note though, if it does happen, imagine all the cheap chod that will come on the market as Londoners desperately try to get rid of their non-compliant vehicles - this will tip the supply / demand balance greatly in favour of provincials such as myself.  It happened to a lesser extent when the LEZ got extended to 3.5-tonners - I bagged myself a T&T'd turbo diesel Transit 190 for 210 quid.

I wish to conquer London. When I was 18 I didn't find it a problem, parked my Mk5 Escort in some underground car park in Westminster and got the tube to a few places, all was well, busy but bearable.

Last year in the MG it was stressful trying to follow the sat nav.

This year in the Polonez was almost unbearable even at 4am.

Next month I'm taking the train instead.
