Sorry, I meant to say the Peugeot 308.

What a waste of a trophy.

Out of interest, why?  New 308 looks a nice enough thing considering. Not an offensive design and allegedly quite nice to drive. Not exciting I know and doesn't really change the new car market much so is a fairly dull choice but I don't see any problem with it.

Saw a fair bit of disappointment about the decision on twitter as well, what were the other nominees?

Just had to go check what it was and taking into account that ANCAS it's not a bad looking car from this angle in my humble opinion.

In fairness, the new 308 does have a slightly reprofiled torsion beam rear axle.......I can see why the Judges looked upon it as THE FUTURE.

I had a Renault 9 with a lot of similarities to the Peugeot:

1 - reduced weight. Yup, tinfoil panels kept the weight down

2 - de clutter the interior. Yup, next to no equipment and I didn't miss any of it anyway

3 - make you closer to the road. Yup, no PAS or ABS or EBD meant I determined which way it went and I WAS THE MASTER!

So really Peugeot just took the Renault 9's superlative range of abilities and applied it to their new car. Bit disappointed at the lack of a saloon (really making the 308 a R11) but I am looking forward to the Broadway and Boston special editions. Next it will be Peugeot, what's yours called?

No, Peugeot just figured out how the photocopier works.

I mean, if they'd correctly called it the 309, I could have understood the excitement.

The rear three quarter looks ok but the front looks shite.

Final seven were as follows -

BMW i3, Citroën C4 Picasso, Mazda3, Mercedes-Benz S-class, Peugeot 308, Skoda Octavia and Tesla S.

Can't say that any of them gets me hot under the hood tbh. Perhaps the i3 would have been more appropriate but then we are still a fair way away from a day when a 'lectrical car is a proper, useable every day car although that is perhaps best yet.

I imagine that the 308 has more relevance to the motoring public as a whole though and thats why it won?

Surely its the S-Klasse that going to make modern cars more, well, modern in the near future?

It's one of the first Peugeots since the 205/405 that I think looks OK. I know this is the autoshite lead balloon, but I'm not too keen on 306 and 406s and everything since those have been gopping.

I drove a Renault 9 recently. I've no idea what was going on in 1982. Surely there was better than that?!

Some years are leaner than others. Setright was a panelist, I seem to remember reading how he viewed the internal politics. in 78 IIRC the porsche 928 won and remains the last time a non mass market car took the gong.

Peugoet headed off competion to win in 1969 with the 504 :-D

Frankly I feel the whole COTY concept peaked in '64.

Setright was eventually barred and he was the only one man enought to publish what he'd wrote on the voting forms.

Haven't quite a few past COTY turned out to be shit anyway...........like Fiats and that?

Looks like a cross between a 1 Series and an A3............

History repeats itself for PSA then. This was 1979's winner:

Hell, yes. The Morris Ital was still in production, for Pete's sake.

Frankly I feel the whole COTY concept peaked in '62.

Let me just tweak that for you  ;)

VW already know how the photocopier works, they also know how to use the 'ENGARGE' function.

I have this strange urge to sellotape a picture of the top-half side-profile of a person over the wheelarch...

Did only the French judges turn up?
