Ever betterer!   Hurrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnnnnnn

PS:  the can of rust-o-stop paint or whatever it is in the back really makes the car.

MOAR details of the Acclaim, please.  Who, what, where, why, how?

Posted

It's my old girl, I haven't really took to it, I think i lost the love when the head gasket went when i bought it and it cost me £250 to fix it, but I'm not selling it until i find a decent replacement plus "Partridge" is interetsed in it, it's a 1984 HLS model, 49000 miles, Tax end April, MOT July, has a few scabs here and there but nothing major, drives nice enough, new cambelt, plugs, leads fluids, gaskets etc, looking for £600.

I'll do a proper advert once I've found a replacement, but like i said, another AS member has expressed an interest.

He has dibs, then, and to be honest I am not sure that I want an Acclaim enough actually to buy one, but that interior looks peacheroo.  GLWTS!

BTW, I am not sure what type of wagon you have in mind as a replacement car, but I am beginning to think of moving on my wife's 1996 Peugeot 205 1.8 diesel (ex garethj), if you might be interested.  All seems pretty fine by AS standards except for (or including) leaking rain behind the front passenger seat.

Evening fellow shitters.

I had hoped this post was going to be a tale of a test drive of the Princess that kicked this thread off, however it has turned into a post of fail.

My plans were thwarted today by the failure of a telephony switch at work that may be as old if not older than the Princess. So two fails in one day.

I may get a chance too get back to see it next week. If I get there I will post an update. In the interim if someone wants to write a 'what to look for' guide on said Princess I can at least look like I know what I am talking about if I get too her.

What to look for guide:

Rust - Specifically: all four arches, trailing edge of front wings, sills, door bottoms, door tops, outer corners of floor pans, corner of boot floor where it meets the rear seat, lip of bootlid, top corners of rear screen, C pillar trim, C pillar vinyl, top edge of windscreen frame, slam panel, front valance, rear valance, bumper mounts, rear lower half of rear quarters, fuel filler neck.

Interior - wonky front seats and collapsed front seat bases, lazy seatbelts, broken dashboard switches, snapped window winder handles.  Clonky/stiff window winders can indicate knackered regulators, common on driver's front door.

Mechanical - lists to either side and sticky green patches under the car indicate a Hydragas issue as does hardness of suspension.  Banging at rear when driven over bumps indicates a suspension problem.  Radiator fan not coming on/going off.  Leaking radiator.  Exhaust blow, usually where downpipe meets manifold.  Minor oil leaks normal, usually not a cause for concern.  Gear change is notchy/sloppy, but too notchy/sloppy indicates imminent failure of gearstick locator pin.  Leaking SU carb can indicate issues internally or porous case.

Other - saggy front doors usually due to worn hinge pins.  Fuel/temperature gauge might be broken, can be temperamental.

I think that covers everything, probably.

I have a strong familial and emotional draw to BL chod of that era, but cannot claim any inside know how on what to look for, so I simply wish you luck and good haggling.

EDIT: I see that Vulgalour, who dances with a Princess, has delivered the gen.

I see that Princess is fitted with a Mobelec Maximiser fuel computer, that's cool.

I really like the shared car idea but three or four people sharing a car sounds like a recipe for shattered friendships. But what if it's done on such a ridiculous scale and with such a worthless car that nobody has much to lose? How many constantly active members does this place have, sixty? If all 60 of us shared a car, some of us would never even get to see it, but the whole thing would be such a hilarious shambles that we'd all get our money's worth in entertainment alone. I'd bet we could get something like Drum's Maestro for about £20 a year, all inc.

That was kind of the concept that I had in mind, but you put it a lot better than I did!  The main aim would be to produce extraordinary quantities of LULZ and schadenfreude.   The car not exploding would be a mere side issue.

Methinks M'lud has provided such mirth by his acquisition of the afore mentioned Volumex of Vanity..

with the added bonus of no harm to my shekels.

That said, I have started a thread re MGB GTs so I may be laughing too soon

What about the slightly borked £200 Justy in the eBay thread? Ten people, £20 each...

How could such a plan possibly fail?  No kidding, I would send the £20 by post, artfully concealed in a  Werther's packet, to anyone mug brave, noble, and fearless enough to try this caper.

Ok who's going to organise it then? I'm also quite happy to chip in £20 for the Autoshite Pool Car on condition that I never have to drive it, or look after it, or repair it. It would probably be more amusing than sponsoring a whale.

Yeah, and unlike a whale it won't lie rotting next to the sea oozing oily fluids.  Er....

Forty-two, any updates on your Princess courtship?

It might... I live in Barrow, and I know we have other beachcombers among us. ;-)

When I were a nipper, the local BL dealer had one just like the beige one on their used car lot for years and years.

I don't know why they couldn't shift it but it started off surrounded by allegros ambassadors and marinas and was still sitting there amongst the maestros and montegos and Fiats which the garage had switched to selling years later.

This was early 80s. The garage has gone now, so I guess someone bought it or they scrapped it!

Forty-two, have yer bought it?

A good idea for this share-0-car is if all the owners have a key. Then if you happen to see it while out and about, you can just get in and take it for a spin!!! Brilliant.

Mr B's suggestion is prime shenanigans and hijinx material.

Re that eBay ad of utter awesomeness, I do not know whether to be more amazed by the sheer car-i-ness of the car that is for sale (nb: it's a car), or by the news that they actually have cars in Leeds.

Posted

They do indeed have cars in Leeds, even a motorway or 2 round here don't you know.

I've watched that listing every time it's been on since it came up on the ebay thread.

It's so very tempting just to bid the £200 on it, as it could literally be anything.

I have tried to message the seller for more info but no luck.

It is a car though, car I am sell mycar as I have a new car now.

Being kind for a change, I infer that the poor dude probably does not have English as his first language or is just very unlettered, so responding to an email may be a bit much for him.   Still an ace advert though.  Maybe we should have a "buy some anonymous shite for 200 quid" thread.
