Collection/delivery dilemma - any suggestions?

Well now people. Me and scooters had cracked out a deal for the T5, involving my Specialized Hardrock Sport pushbike.

That is until I checked the train fares to Blackpool from Rainham, Essex.

For me and Mrs T, on Monday 10th Feb, the only day I can do this, the fare is almost ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY QUID. One way.

Effing ridiculous.

It also means I'd have to hump the bike about on the London Underground, something else I really don't fancy.

Anybody got any ideas?

I'm stumped.

I should have added, go to halfords or local cycle shop and acquire a suitable cycle shaped box

Get an old coffee tin and cut a slot in the top. Get a wacky T shirt made up with "Sponsored cycle ride to Blackpool" on it. Stand and shake tin in town centre. Have the bike there as proof. Collect £1000. Pay a Romanian to ride the bike to Blackpool wearing a balaclava and the T shirt , and have enough left over to pay the bus and buy the T5.

How hard was that?

Search around, it may be cheaper to buy train tickets off peak from essex to somewhere, then from somewhere to somewhere else, and then finally from somewhere else to Blackpool North.

I have done this in the past and its even been the same train so I havent had to get off.

Make Mrs T pay her own fare - saved you 50% already and I'm not even trying :)

Try to break the journey down into lumps and see if one part is more expensive. You might stumble across special fares if, say, you stop at the biggest station near to your destination (like Liverpool?) and local bus the rest of the way, or do the deal there.

Or pay DUNG-GONE to drive it down.

Single Train Tickets:

Rainham - Lond Euston = £9.40 (change at Fenchurch or some other shit to get the tube to Euston) dep 12.25 Arr 13.35 - get brew, read paper.

Lond Euston - Preston = £54.50 (first class) [second class costs more oddly] depart 14.40 arrive Preston 17.50hrs

Preston to Blackpool North = £8.60 Dep 17.55 arr 18.24hrs

Total : £72

Are you in a pushbike breakdown service? Maybe you could have catastrophic crank failure..

Unfortunately there are two people going, so that'll be doubled.... still a couple of score saved, which would help with the petrol of course!

Thanks for the suggestions so far people.

I had actually thought of using a courier for the bike.

I'll have to check that one out.

Maybe it would be a lot less hassle for scooters if someone local bought the T5.

Play around with the routing and times e.g.

Catch the 10.56 from Rainham to Manchester Picadilly (change in London) arr. 14.28 = £33.

Manchester Picadiily to Blackpool North dep. 14.46, arr. 16.05 = £7.50.

Total of £81 for the pair of you and only about a half hour longer than the more direct route.

^^^ There you go, sage advice and much cheaper.

I had that and cycled 10 miles on one pedal, I was well knackered by the end. If it wasn't for the toe clip I'd have been walking.

Take tools to DaveB47's house, put frontpipe on Alfa, drive it to my house, give it to me, and I'll run you to Blackpool.

Job most definitely done.

I'm about 8 miles away from where the T5 is parked up, if it helps I've got off road parking that's just about Volvo sized, if Scooter could drop it off at mine or you don't mind me picking it up you could store it here until a cheaper train ticket or megabus mission becomes available.

Bike couriers usually around the £27 mark I think. I'd happily offer to go to Blackpool, drive T5 to Crewe, meet you there and then I can get train home if that would help?

I've been thinking along those lines too, as I want the 147. Google maps and bank account have been looked at. They disagreed.

The car could be relayed to my place, too, courtesy of Do-gong and myself.

Then you would only need train/bus/helicopter tickets to the shithole of Stockport.

Thanks for all the help and advice people, and the fantastic offers of storage and driving it part way down country.

Much to my disgust, I now can't complete the deal.

Thanks again everybody.

If the mong doesn't buy the 405 then perhaps we could get the t5 taxed and I could drive it to Stockport, drop it at yours and take yr Doris's 405 which, provided the pond life don't buy it, we have expressed an interest in. Then tetly can come up to stocky and collect it from yours, Chris....simples...

Scoots old boy, please don't tax the Volvo on my account guv, in case things do finally go belly up and I can't have it after all.

I feel bad enough for buggering everyone about thus far, don't want to throw £125'S worth of tax into the mix.

No pressure Dave, as mentioned, there is a certain well known scouse type who is shaking a fist full of old bikes in the wings,:-)
