6 cylinder despair. May contain non-camper life-forms by now.

Here's a picture of mine, although I think maybe shite graphics as well...

So so so so close to buying either a Talbot Express Camper or a Ford Transit MK1, or a Starcraft.

So close!

May wait until the successful completion of my welding course early next year, then I can buy a rotten one, because rotten means cheap, and I'm a cheap kinda guy :)

thats a bit of a range there, with the Mk1 transit being at the top end.

@ Mr Duke, we reverted a Mk1 camper back to a panel van.

I have a soft spot for shite campers. Way back in 2007 I started a topic called Campershite: http://autoshite.com/topic/213-campershite/ because I'd seen a Mk 1 Tranny camper I really liked. Here it is again:

However I reckon I might have beaten this, with one I papped in Exeter yesterday. I can really see myself in this, rattling around the country without a care in the world

Reckon thats an ex-Fire Brigade Bedford with Alfred Miles bodywork....How about building something on a Jag 4.2 engined Dennis?  Be a laugh...

This is a camper, no need for a house with this baby.

I went looking for a camper a few years ago, for going away in, did have a Commer many years ago but it never managed more than a longish run without major work, rebuilt vitually everything over some time but rather than it then being a nice van it was time to start over, so obviously when I wanted another van I looked for a Commer first, couldn't find any, went to look at a few Transits but then I'd usually be presented with a scale model of a Transit in Isopon, similar thing With Bedfords, then had my heart set on a Standard Atlas but the vendor was being funny so in despair I bought my first ever German Vehicle, an eighties Transporter of all things, got it early in the year while prices were low intending to use and move on maybe for a profit, 40K later the only faults have been a washer pump and a speedo cable and I can't see myself ever parting with the thing.

That articulated outfit is amazing. I can only guess on the reaction you'd get rolling up to a Caravan Club site in that. Before moving to towing a 'van, we had a Mazda Bongo;

2.5l V6 pez rwd. It went well and was incredibly reliable but for a family of 4, not really a viable machine.

I was speaking to a mate yesterday and we've agreed to go halves on an old campervan in the New Year. He's not bothered about what it is as long as it has two beds and will fit on his driveway, where it will be kept. Obviously the budget is going to be very low, about £1500 for something on the road. My current thoughts are:

Toyota Hiace MK1.

Fiat Amigo/Pandora.

Bedford Bambi.

This dainty item was mine 1999-2010 ish, a late MK2 Tranny with Di engine, going to Europe umpteen times etc with my 2 young sons. It's still taxed now, not bad considering the dash was full of bodge when I bought it with 27k miles on. It is a LHD body on a RHD chassis cab though they were the same age and appeared to have been built together. I only ever saw 2 others that looked to have been built in the same coachworks, one a VW, the other a Ford Cargo.

This is the earliest model I remember on the UK market.  The one you showed replaced it in about 1977.

With Dutch plates, more likely a Blitz than a CF though. One piece GRP arse end on it?

Love this thread, had a fair few old hippy buses, Dodge 50, Renner Master petrol, Iveco welfare bus, leyland road runner library bus etc..and currently pondering some sort of rip snorting ex fire engine diesel due to massive engines and auto gearbox - strip all the heavy crap off and take it from there, but bit of a pipedream at the moment financially - have to stick with my transit with roof tent for now.
