1997 1.8 UK MX5, Rotherham. £350

My mum has been running round in it for the last few years, but she's got problems with her back and arm so I've just got her an automatic golf which is a lot more suitable.

Its a 1997 P reg, 1.8 130bp UK car. Green. ~8 months MOT (currently taxed for 6 months if you want to pay for it). Ready to drive away!!!!111

103k ish, PAS.

I would say it is quite rusty and the suspension bushes are shit, but it would do another few years in the right hands. Other than being quite rusty, the rest of the paint could do with a buff.

The hood pisses water in through a hole in the back window. Water runs into the boot, and out of the grommets in the bottom.

Mechanically its decent, brakes are good and the rears and new for the last MOT. Shocks are soggy. Engine and box are nice and reliable. Probably about ten years/80k overdue for a cambelt, but they are non interference so it's all good fun really.

WarrenTClaim was looking for one of these in 1.8 a while back.

That won't hang around for an OTR MX5 for 350!

I hope you don't mind but I put your car in the bargain basement thread on pistonheads as the MX5 is the must have bargain car for that site..

So you may get a few calls for the old girl and she could end up as a track day car..

First generation MX5s are absolutely brilliant, a proper sportscar that can be bought and run on an Autoshite budget !

I don't expect this one to take long to sell, especially considering the bargainous price.

Posted

For that price it's a no-brainer. I truly despise living on a tightly packed main road sometimes, we're lucky that we can get both our cars on the road outside let alone a plaything :(

Have some of this:

I should mention that it's not really metal under the paint/rust, they have been wobbed up a at some point along the line.

The other side is in about the same condition, really. Spare wheel is on due to a nail in the tyre which I'll get repaired if I get chance

That doesn't look too bad. I'd have it if I physically fitted inside of one.

I'd have had a MK1 MX-5 ages ago if I could stomach the insurance.

You should try John's now he has binned the interior door-pull handles in favour of some aftermarket leather straps.

He reckons it has contributed an addition 3" on each side.

Nice to see the OP's is a UK car rather than Eunos Roadster for the cheap insurance we all know and love.

My mum paid £160 fully comp! aidy flux seem to view them as classics or something!

Most places do if it's not an import.

£350 pounds gt hardtop wif it 2 m8?

Posted

it used to have a hardtop on it back in the olden days, I found one at a scrapyard for £30. It sold it on ebay for about £450 because my mum didn't want it!!!

Here it is in October 2010 when I used to own it, complete without suspension travel and tyres what weren't wide enough for the wheels they were on:

There's something telling me that this is perfect Cavcraft stock.

Won't make the roofline 6inches taller I shouldn't have thought.

It would still have to be top down everywhere.

And the problem with this is?

I really want this, and could deliver that wing at the same time. Shame it is about £400 out of my price range :(

Seriously tempted as it goes. I'm six foot three and seventeen-ish stone though, would I fit in one these?

Posted

I'm 5'9, 11.5 stone after my dinner and I had one or two clicks left on the seat. I don't think I'd have been all that comfortable if there was 60% more of me, but I reckon you might physically fit if greased suitably. You might even go in dry, who knows?

Indeed. Sadly as I couldn't find one at the time I bought another sporty two seater that I still have.

Better than you would at a Tory party fundraiser but not as well as a mk1 MR2.

I'd love to take you up on that Craig. I've been mostly inside of one before but the view of the road was obscured by the screen top. Even then it took two people from the outside to get the door shut.

I think Billy would struggle, but would have a lot of uncomfortable fun.

£30! Amazing find. That's the way to ebay. Looks great with a drop on those RFX? wheels.

Ben, I have seen you in a Mini. Your argument holds no water.

A mate of mine is 6'2" and fatter than you Billy, and he borrows his Dads Eunos quite frequently without too much bother ... The only thing to do if you're unsure is to try one. I'm sure theres a mk1 mx-5 for sale you somewhere near you that you could try for size.

I want this as well, but can't justify it.

barmatt, are you sure you don't want it? I can collect and deliver it for you if you cover my expenses.

There's a shitload more room in the cabin of a mini then there is in an MX5.

That's why there's no impressive Guinness world record for the amount of people you can fit inside an MX5.

Mini- 25 people at a push.

MX5 - 4 people at a push.

Surely height is spread over the length of the body? So a difference of 3 inches between two people are 1.5 inches on the legs and 1.5 inches on the torso area. And considering each 'click' on a car seat is about 1 inch (and I reckon there's about 6 - 8 clicks), leg room shouldn't be that much of a problem? I NO WHAT IM TALCING ABOUT.

KruJoe, Me and SambaS all squeezed into the front of the MR2. That was a bit of a squash!

That was my (significantly larger than a Mk1) Mk2 though. I couldn't get us all in shot:

We've also had myself, David_Fowler, Andy_CMS, Phil_Busmo, Edd_Samba, and Cameron_Mcoli in a three door 205 diesel.

We* somehow accidentally* got it sideways on a private* lane, but we all survived.

I'm six foot four and err....a bit more than seventeen-ish stone and I fit ok. Good shout about the interior door handles though - it makes a whole world of difference.

I trust my specimen is shite enough to grace these beige pages....

Wifey has an Mx5 (mk1 1.6 poverty spec Monza) as her 'second car' and I'd love to get another one, for a project, but just don't have the room.
