Well, no by "easy" its drop one subframe with everything on it, then bolt up the manual one. Done it on a mini a few summers ago and the job was very straightforward and meant no dicking about swapping over this bit and that. Pedal box was a PITA though.

Looks like a real bargain at £1900,

(especially when you read the seller's feedback of taking payment for, but apparently not sending a sexy santa outfit)

Now where did I put my bank book, oh yes, its in the 500 sel I bought last year for £465 with 8 months test

Pretty sure its just the RS turbos which are giving off a massive scene tax at the moment, other MKIIIs have yet to raise at quite a rate. There was (or still is) a RS turbo MKIII for sale in Basingstoke for something ridiculous, I dont see how they could be worth that much (just) yet.

Sad thing is Pog, you could probably luzz an 80grit on the grinder, baremetal and lacquer it, lob the glass and a grotty engine / interior in and wang it up for 13K!

You'd have to be a grade A shlong to blow 4 and a half big ones on that. Look how buckled and distorted it is!...

Note the camera dates in the pics are from 2007, so it could even be a whole lot worse by now.

I love how hes made the engine work seem like an easy one, as if to say:'Yeh sure the fire started there, but then it spread AWAY from it, meaning it wasnt that bad.'Fine for the scrapheap. No more, no less.

Fook that you could get a running 66 transit for 4 grand, I know what I would rather have!

It's at £4750 now! I am actually lost as to why anyone would give more than about £500 for that. Unless of course it's real value is in its chassis number and reg plates...

Ive always wondered about these uninsured total loss burnout/ write off jobbies. Whats stopping you buying this camper taking it home and saying it burnt out in your possesion? Easy way to defraud 25k out of the insurers?I guess Norwich union e.t.c employees do check ebay/autotrader from time to time.....As has been hinted at, maybe it would be easy to nick a minter and swap the ID round.

To be fair it would probably be worth £25-40k if it was all sorted out. Thyats a sum of money which I am unable to compute in any way that relates it to cars. I can see though that you can afford to tip a lot more hours into one of those before it is uneconomic, than you can into a Proton 1.5 SE Aerodeck or similar.

I'd imagine the insurers would want details of where and when it caught fire. If it was whilst driving, there'd be corresponding emergency services callouts. Outside your house? There's going to be a big scorchmark for them to see, as well as a fire brigade callout. In your garage where you said you park it to get cheap insurance? Then why isn't your house burned down too etc etc.I'd be fairly certain that the bus is only going to give up its chassis number and V5, and before long a nice 21 window Samba is going to go missing and never be found again :( There's just no way you could restore that bus, it needs every single panel, a new engine and gearbox, plenty of chassis work, new interior, paint.... yeah a samba will be worth £20k+ finished to a good standard, but knowing the cost of VW parts and labour, you're looking at £20k+ to get it there..... plus £5000 to buy the thing in the first place!

Just stick it on your drive, wang a load of old carpet/rubber/car seats e.t.c inside and torch it. Nice big scorch mark on drive and a "freshly" burnt out camper. Im just thinking out loud. I bet insurers are wise to every possible scam going.

I'd pay 4,500 for that if it was guaranteed after 'a bit of work' I'd make multiples of it from some 'grade A schlong'. Easy money!

Are the parts available to build one of those from scratch?

Yes, but mostly pattern parts from the likes of Schofields. The quality isn't bad usually but the prices will make you clench your bum. There's also cheaper pattern parts for common items like doors, front panels, rear quarters and stuff. You might as well go and buy parts for a Lancia Thema for all the cutting and reshaping you'll have to do.Can't off the top of my head think of any parts that are known to be unavailable. That's either an indication of the great aftermarket support for VWs, or that where enough idiots have enough money, anything can be made.

If you can restore this;

Then that fire damaged one would be a piece of piss.

The most expensive Microbus I've seen sold was close to £70k, an average pre-bay one seems to fetch between £15-£20k. That one has been burnt, but that'll save ages trying to scrape out the 500kg of filler they normally have in them.

Yup, it's gonna be £20k by the time it's back on the road and useable, but it'd more than likely be more useable and better than most of the ones out there for £20k once it's done.

The buckles in the bodywork would be easy to sort in the grand scale of things. I'd rather sort out solid metal than spend forever cutting out old bodges.

I don't think it's cheap, but I know plenty of people who'd buy the completed van if it's done to a good standard. I know someone who did pretty much the same kind of rebuild to a DeTomaso Pantera and it was utterly gorgeous when finished - sold for £50k gorgeous.

Jesus Christ, £200000 for this DS!! That has got to be an error, Has it?.

It's probably about right. I know Alan Clark's DS drop top was valued at about £150k when he died - and that was a few years ago now.Personally, I don't get it, but there are people out there who think the DS is beautiful, and I suppose one of the Chapron jobs is gonna be the most desirable of 'em.

It's high, but when last I investigated, Citroen Descapotables were selling for around $100,000 USD.

If this one has some unusual history or is a not and bolt restoration, that might explain the even more crackpipe pricing.

There used to be a company in Oxford called the 'French Car Company' and they made decapotable replicas. Not sure what happened to the company but I have their brichure somewhere that I picked up at the NEC a few years back.

Dunno if anyone will need these?

A complete set of Peugeot 404 steel wheels:

Seem to remember this shape came on all the late 70's, early 80's '04' three stud shaped cars.

While these are very expensive, they've been at that price for quite a while. 5-6 years ago those wheels would have still been £600+. For some reason those steering wheels are mega desirable too. ..I apologise for almost all my posts in this thread backing up the Ford Scene Tax, but I was there once.

That's truly a stunner, but as with all such cars, if you bought it, would you dare actually use it?! The Mk 2 GT with V6 conversion on the same page looks a better prospect, and is a lot cheaper...... or at least, a lot less expensive!
