Massive VW re-call

I beg to differ there, doing what I do for a living Apple is the only way. Also, every phone I've had is like a toy compared to an iPhone.

'Doing what you're doing' presumably being a sales rep for Apple?

I've got one of those iPhones. It's like a regular phone but more expensive and every time they update it they make it a little more shit than it was the last time. When it comes time to change I won't have an iPhone any more. It's not good enough for the premium that's attached.

Does that make it like a Golf, then?

Yeah, you'll go from your Golf iPhone to a Kia Windows Phone. You won't readily admit to having one, for reasons you can't quite put your finger on.

I've got an Iphone 4 thingy. Mother_Dick insisted on me having one before I went to uni, even to the extent that she offered to pay half the cost to get me off my old Nokia. I relented, and got a nearly-new one off Ebay. It's ok, I mean, it does all the things I expect from a phone. I prefer typing text messages on this one to my old phone which had proper buttons, and the games and music on it are pretty good. I keep it in a case as I've read about how fragile they are. It's 100x better than the Android smartphone I had for a week two years ago, before I went back to using my old Nokia. That was truly shit and barely usable.

I don't get the updates, my sister (who is obsessed with everything Apple, has an I-mac, I-pad and I-phone), showed me the update she'd made to her phone, saying about how amazing it is and how I had to get it.

The icons and background on the main screen were slightly different. I told her I couldn't be arsed.

The headphones broke on mine, and tried to get a new set from Apple in town. £25! I went to the independent shop next door and got a non-genuine set for a tenner, which have already laster longer than the genuine Apple ones.

I certainly have no sheep-like brand loyalty like my sister and no plans to "upgrade" to the latest model. I'll keep it until it breaks, and if it breaks I'll probably try a different brand.

Just like VAG products, I'm sure there's loads of other phones out there that do the same job or better for less money.

so a mass produced engine used in many cars has a problem that will make the cars just about worthless in 10-15 years, does that mean in a few years time we will all be saying "oh no OMGDIF"?

Do you think they need sales reps?

I actually think VW is the BL of the current generation, too many brands, competing with its self, and dreadful quality. Trouble is, too many daft buggers keep buying them

Erm, yes?

Felly you make an interesting point, but I think VADGE group's marketing is a lot stronger than BL's was.

Posted

I think people kept buying BL out of misguided patriotism rather than because they really thought that they were superior cars. Although even that makes more sense than basing the decision on 'coolness'.

Posted

^ But BL went down the pan precisely because of cars like the VW Golf back in the day, that and Japanese imports. They didn't keep on buying out of 'patriotism', they stuck two fingers up at buying a heap built by communist shop steward subversives and opted for reliability. That and the fact that a seventies Golf was actually cool, and a Allegro or Marina was a liability.

I don't know who the modern day seventies VW is though.

I know why they expired in the end, but they still managed to sell plenty of badly-built cars for over a decade (not just to their own employees I imagine) when there were far better alternatives available. Hell, Nissan nailed the A-series 'copy' at the first attempt, but people still kept on buying the wheezy, temperamental originals right up to the end.

From what I can gather VAG group cars aren't all that bad but they are overrated... Yes, quite a few of them are blowing up but most manufacturers churn out absolute turds of cars/engines regularly, see MK2 Laguna, ORL VOXHALS R SHIT etc.

What VAG do do well is marketing, their marketing campaigns are generally spot on and they've built up a strong image and loyalty around their products. The number of brands they are operating though can't continue though; I saw a couple of weeks ago Seat lost £200 million last year despite all their efforts to make it profitable... Then there's the madness of Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Porsche all being in the same group and churning out very similar products, they'll need to make some difficult decisions in the future.

I'm going to stick my neck out here, but I'd say Fiat. Very under the radar these days, but seem to be diddling along gaining a decent reputation for building decent cars. I'll still say a Panda is all the car anyone actually Needs..

You're speaking of the original, obviously.

Are the gearbox problems with DSG gearboxes, which have two wet plate clutches? If so wrong type of oil suggests cheapskate owners not using the correct oil(I assume it needs changing from time to time) Also VAG PDI engines are very sensitive to the oil used, no Aldi special offers here :(.

Another case of 'all new cars are....etc, etc.?' ;)

No, it's for a certain variety of the 7 speed DSG which has dry clutches, but just like normal gearboxes it requires oil for lubricating all the coggy bits.

Golfs weren't that cool in the 1970's. BL went to shit for various reasons, most of which have been mentioned on here several thousand times.

Well I for one will not be buying a VW after reading this, clearly their reputation has OMG IT'S GOT BLUE DIALS AND SOFT TOUCH DOOR HANDLES! WHERE DO I SIGN?

Oi! That's my line.

^ I think Golfs were cool in the seventies, I was there. We all used to take the piss out of people in BL chod as it seemed to rust in front of you. Everyone I knew would have had a Golf if given a choice.

Don't tell me you bought a silver 1.9 TDi 5 door as well? Just how jealous were your neighbours when you pulled up in that? Mine only have a complete shed of a 60 plate Focus petrol!

Does any product need sales reps? I think it's all a big conspiracy involving Vauxhall, Ford the government and the oil companies.

Nobody I knew would have a Golf at the time. Clever advertising aside, they were a bit 'unknown' at the time and it was far from just BL who were their 'rivals' then.
