barrett Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Hey, remember this sucka? DSCN4926 by barrogance, on Flickr Well, it really needs a replacement driver's door now. Although it's always been shagged, it did at least perform its basic function as a point of ingress and egress and a means of keeping the weather/ miscreants out of the car, but last week it decided it was going to stop doing any of that, and now the window won't wind down properly, and if you do wind it down it falls out of place and won't wind back up again. I know one could probably sort this out by carefully dismantling the door trim and re-seating the window frame, repairing any damage to the mechanism etc, but if at all possible I'd rather be doing that to a door that didn't have a massive F-off dent in it. I know when Gary started a thread about this car there were a couple of offers of doors (somebody had one, on the other side of the country and the RONG colour, but I think it was FOC and the AS pony express was geeing up to get it Southward - there was another one in situ on a scrapper that somebody made some noises about going to look at but I don't think anything came of either of these offers... apologies, I was avoiding the internets in general at that stage so wasn't paying too much attention to who was offering what. If anybody can point us in the direction of a very cheap (or better) driver's door for a four-door Allegro then, please, speak up now. Secondly, and far more annoyingly, this car has a massive water leak. After heavy rain the nearside footwell is filled with a couple of inches of standing water. We can't figure out where TF it is coming in from, but appears to be making its final descent from the bottom edge of the glovebox lid (WTF?). The screen seems all shipshape, so where is it coming from? I'm not taking about a few splashes here, the car literally fills with water in any sort of precipitous conditions. I know Gary's last Allegro was similarly waterlogged, but never on this scale. Does anyone with any expertise of these things fancy suggesting a possible point of entry of the gushing deluge? Because no chicks will go for a ride with me if they're gonna get wet feet, this I know. THANKS GUYS!
garycox Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 It was Lankytim who had the straight but incorrectly coloured door, the beige one was in a scrapyard in Norfolk, I have the detials of which one in a PM somewhere. Anyone in Norfolk able to check it out? EDIT - It was this yard (info from greengartside) David Yarham SalvageCrofton WorksHarvey’s LaneSeething AirfieldNorwichNorfolkNR15 1EN
I_am_Diesel Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Get the car away from the coast, the salty air will dissolve it before your very eyes!!!!
Craig the Princess Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Where are you barrett? South Coast?
Angrydicky Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Do Allegros suffer from the same scuttle/bulkhead rust as ADO16's? My Austin 1100 always ended up with loads of water in the footwells after rain, caused by a few small rust holes on the bulkhead behind the dashboard. You could try temporarily blanking off the scuttle vent to see if that is the cause.
Craig the Princess Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Allegros have plastic drain tubes running from the courners of the screen to the bonnet shut, if one breaks or is unattached the water drops down through the glovebox. Black mastic on the windscreen rubber can help. garycox 1

Black mastic on the windscreen rubber can help. Excellent! That is exactly the kind of insider gen I was hoping to find. I suppose there is no hope of repairing/replacing these without taking the entire dash off, right? I will go and have a read of the manual and see if I can figure it out. Thanks! (Would prefer not to seal up the screen rubber with mastic, as much as I love bodgery this car is deffo still walking the line between 'shed' and 'going concern' so I'd like it to have as much chance of a future as possible
barrett Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 It's probably at your house because it isn't in the glove box. No luck getting behind the dash to find these pipes, but I took the carpet out at least which is now drying indoors for a bit. If this car wasn't so leaky it would be really good.
greengartside Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Sorry guys but the Allegro is now sadly gone - I did look up there the other weekend but there was nothing there.
londonm Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Get the car away from the coast, the salty air will dissolve it before your very eyes!!!!Absolutely correct, Bournemouth used to make cars of this era dissolve in front of your very eyes,
Lankytim Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Still got a yellow door here if you want it. Behind the engine on the bullhead there are a pair of rubber bung things with flaps in to let water drain out of the scuttle, these always clog up with rotten leaves and cause rain water to pour into the heater and then onto the floor of the car, its worth checking these.
garycox Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Sorry guys but the Allegro is now sadly gone - I did look up there the other weekend but there was nothing there. Boo! Thanks for checking though! Still got a yellow door here if you want it. Behind the engine on the bullhead there are a pair of rubber bung things with flaps in to let water drain out of the scuttle, these always clog up with rotten leaves and cause rain water to pour into the heater and then onto the floor of the car, its worth checking these. Cheers LT, that door would be pretty handy in that case. We'll have to think of a 'getting it down to Brighton' plan sometime soon. Hopefully it'll go better than my 'getting a load of magazines from Wellingborough' plan, which so far has resulted in them being moved to a different place in Wellingborough I'm sure I tried looking for these bung things when I had the other Allegro and completely failed, but I probably only looked for about 0.2 seconds and then gave up.
MrDuke Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Mr Tim's location is almost en-route for my journeys dahn sarf to see the parents (in fact I think I offered to pick it up last time) - next scheduled trip is in January and I can get it as far as Herts, maybe further.
Lankytim Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Well, it's not going anywhere in the mean time! I could possibly get it down to Felixtowe and Trigger, but it would probably be further away than it is now.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 These old BL crates ALWAYS piss water in, I don't think I've ever had an offering from the firm that didn't fill up on rainy days! Bloody things. Angrydicky, Pete-M and philibusmo 3
dollywobbler Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Indeed. The swimming pool I discovered in that Maxi I looked at reminded me very much of our old Mini. The Discovery demonstrates its fine heritage by making a roof look like a waste of time. In fact, if I removed the roof, it would possibly be MORE watertight. Pete-M and hauserplenty 2

I am currently in negotiations with Mr Duke over a vehicle swap, and I live on the Bedford to Brighton railway line. If he can pick up and deliver it to me at the same time, I could be persuaded to assist the next leg of the journey by meeting Barrett halfway along the line, at St Pancras station, wearing an Allegro door. I'm sure it would provide amusement to all the French people getting off the Eurostar anyway.
barrett Posted November 21, 2013 Author Posted November 21, 2013 Well, I cleared out the bungs on the bulkhead which were indeed full of old leaves and crap. It has rained pretty heavily a couple of times since and it seems to be totally dry inside so the carpet has gone back in, which means I can at least hear the radio again. Wilko220 - If the door could get to Bedford that would be a great help as I p0g already has loads of tat for me that I need to collect at some point, and I have a set of wheels for him... Craig the Princess 1
Wilko220 Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Yeah, I could drop it off in Bedford for you, no trouble, if Mr Duke delivered it to me. I don't think he is planning on coming down my way until January though...
