Thanks Ken, so it's still around but I'd love to know where. A packet of Refreshers and a gobstopper for anyone who can tell me where 903 JYA is now.

I get too attached to some of them and don't really like selling anything.

The two that stand out are thus -

'99 Alfa 145 Cloverleaf. I had loads done on it (it was an Alfa after all) but really liked it. Sold it when everything was fixed and before anything else broke (inevitable that it would) but knew even then that I would regret it. I'd have liked to just stick it somewhere warm and dry then drag it back out in twenty years and get it properly sorted but lifes just not that easy.

'01 Mercedes Sprinter 313 Cdi. Massively useful and practical and quite decent to drive. Unusually very unrusty too. Sold as it needed a small fortune spending on the engine - four injectors, loom, head work and a few other bits and I sold it for what I paid for it two years previously so a pretty good deal all in all but I still wish I'd spent them money and fixed it and kept it to this day.

One I shouldn't have sold because it was a deathtrap - back in about 2000 I (or someone like me) had a 1982 R4 TL. Looked very shiny but was kippered underneath - this was confirmed by the two page MOT fail sheet. I may* have lost the MOT fail sheet before selling it as a 'barn find' that 'probably won't need much doing'.

Probably on this:

^Ha, yes, well you never know but it was in seriously good nick when I sold it (admittedly that was well over ten years ago), not a spot of rust anywhere, so I'm hoping that it was in too good nick to be an ideal candidate for plate raping.

Fiesta 1.4S mk2. The first 'decent' car I bought after the first two shitheaps. Going from a 1.1 mk3 Escort with an accelerator pedal that increased the engine noise but seemingly didn't advance speed any, to a small light Fiesta with a 1.4 motor, twin choke Weber etc was a bit of a leap, performance wise. Bodywork was immaculate, it came with full Ford service history and had been delocked and had a fancy (for the time) remote locking/alarm system. Almost XR2 performance and looks.

Same here. I had a red '87 fiesta 1.4s which a doll I used to be engaged to decided to wreak havoc in a filling station forecourt! She managed to uproot 3 petrol pumps, and wreck another fiesta and a Volvo 240! I have the newspaper clipping somewhere. Happened back in '92 or 93.

Anyway the one I regret selling was a really good late model mk1 fiesta 1.1 hillclimb and sprint car. It was running a steel 1.3 on twin weber down draughts carbs, 4 branch £ full janspeed, billies, xr2 brakes, full safety devices cage, seats, harnesses, sump and tank guards, the whole nine yards. A mate tortured me to sell it to him after I got myself a group n eg civic. Anyway I eventually gave in and sold it for peanuts. He broke it and I was kind of heart broken. :o( I wish I had it now.

I think there's too many to list for me, but some that spring to mind are my Escort mk1 Mexico which I sold for about £300 which had a nice rebuild 1700cc crossflow and a good rust free body.

Or my1967/68 mk1 Escort 1300gt which was a lovely 2 owner car in ermine white with a lotus cortina green stripe which I gave away it was a very early one it was so early that when trying to order parts it was a complete nightmare as I was always told that the car wasn't made on that year in that model.

Also I have had a few hot hatches and saloons which I should never have sold for peanuts which I spent a small fortune on but just got bored with such as a Mk2 RS 2000 and a lovely early XR3 and I had a lovely late Mk1 GTE which a sold when I bought a 3 year old XR2i.

I guess that's why it's always the humdrum everyday motors that fetch the money years later as there's always a bit of nostalgia associated to the everyday car which ended up in the scrapyards around the country in their thousands.

Most of mine were utterly fucked when I parted with them but there are a few:

Mk1 Escort 1300XL 4dr (XEV379L). Bought for £800, £500 on paint, and sold for £300. FAIL. Needed floorpans, bought them but never got round to having them welded in. Poor effort.

N reg Transit, sold cos I got a bit sick of having a big van as my only vehicle, but was mega useful and if I'd kept it would've saved loads on van hire and hassle.

Mazda 121 M121OMS. I LOVED this car, it looked absolutely ridiculous (purple, bodykit, 3 spokes etc) but MASSIVE fun, great handling, full length electric fabric sunroof etc, sold cos I couldn't find a radiator for less than £250. Lasted a while after I sold it, but untaxed for a year now  Doubt I'll find another.

I also regret getting rid of the ex-Wuvvum Cartlon 2.6i CDX estate. It needed loads of welding and other stuff to scrape through an MOT and wasn't the best example anyway, but it's my favourite of all the cars I've had. I've been looking for another in the same spec ever since, but they don't exist!

And finally,one from my Dad...

FD Ventora WPA506G. My favourite car of ever. Sold when I was 15 so there's no way I could take it on. If I ever have the funds (about 4 times what he sold it for at the moment ) I WILL have it back, whatever condition it's in. If I won the lottery and could only buy one car, that'd be it.

This mint black one owner Escort 1.6 Ghia should have been a keeper - it was lovely. I sold it to my brother, then got it back from him for a bit then sold it to a neighbours friend. A few months later we got a letter from the divla saying it had been abandoned somewhere near Woking. :(

Hey, how about this, I've never sold a car!

Neither have I :)

Ami Super.

Fastest thing I've had down the narrow, pot-holed & muddy single tracks around here.

Narrow, so good for squeezing past the other git; superb brakes, superb headlights, low geared, air-cooled and revved like a strimmer, fantastic soft ride and of course 1015cm3 where 602cm3 should have been .

Not even rusty. 27mpg but that doesn't stop me wanting another one.

It's not a 2.6, but the 2.0 litre is good enough. Top spec too....

Biggest regret was the 940 Diesel estate, sold it to me sis and we've kicked ourselves ever since, its only just been disposed of due mainly to being eaten by BiLs dogs, crunched several times and totally neglected (i just can't do that to a car), but it was still going strong no rust, refused to break down, and pulled like a bloody train.

Most amazing thing is the Varta battery, it was on it when we bought the thing about 14 years ago, bloody great thing it is, still going strong.

Sis used the car to jump start her Volvo artic numerous times when the bloody rubbish would go flat over Christmas etc, and never once did the 24v surge bother that car one bit.

They really don't make cars like that any more, we bought a petrol W124 320 estate to replace the Volvo, what a heap of complete crap that turned out to be.

Sometimes regret selling the Hilux, as simple a 2007 motor as you'd find but could drink some bloody fuel.

Miss the 827 manual too, ex plod driving school, that could bloody shift.

We sold a low mileage W124 300 Diesel in 07, it was in fantastic condition but we had to cut the fleet to buy the Hilux, recently had the sad news from my MB indy (who still maintained it) that its been written off by being whacked up the arse by someone driving like a twat in a 4x4, my indy is really upset about it, not many 124 Diesel saloons around in the condition that one was.

No problem, when i got it it was as you described, its back to a hardtop now tho but still have your ragtop and it does get fitted some summers when i can trust the weather and yes i can confirm the seats are still very comfy compared to the standard efforts. I still have one pic from the day i brought i think (will look) it but due to digital cameras and a couple of computer meltdowns i dont have many of the last 9 yrs. will snap a few on my phone.

I regret selling my MK1 MX5 auto. It was a brilliant little car. Totally rust free (import) and low miles. Not quick and the gearbox, while working perfectly, wasn't fantastically matched to the engine,  but it was just GREAT FUN!!!!!!!!! Only sold it 'cos we got a second dog and it wasn't being used.

Funnilly enough, I saw it twice in the same week parked up, still looks great.

Neils: thanks mate, I got quite excited to hear it was still in good hands and thriving. The owner before me lived on a farm in Somerset, and his idea of rust protection was to paint the chassis once a year. When I took it on I installed two decent seats and a cubby box, plus roll cage and the canvas tilt. Because I was still quite young and inexperienced, insurance costs ruled out under-bonnet mods.

I've always wondered if I would see it again, I would recognise the distinctive wheel arches immediately :)

P936 JSF A boggo 1.6 Vectra Premier that did 12 months delivering fast food and never missed a beat. Oh it did

the hard way too.......Edinburgh is FULL of speed humps and shit like them.......brakes are for pussies. I

scrapped it coz i got a newer one and nobody wanted it......STUPID STUPID.lol.

TFX £$%R    A really early Sd1 Rover 3500 auto. I had this in 87 and what a car for a 21 year old to be seen in.

Any of the three Alfasuds I owned as a student in the 80's (1.2, 1.3Ti, 1.5) - all predictably ratty/rusty as 'suds were in them days

My Mk1 Golf GTi - made a good profit when sold so cannot whinge but still should've kept it!

My first 205GTi (black) - have another now (white!) which is superb but still would like have kept hold of the original I had in '94/5.

BTW Sorn me - love the Ami - even more so knowing it has a GS motor in it!!!!

Here you go mr livered, still got the weird wheel arches (have allways wondered about them, never seen another like it and they look quite professionally done? Still got your seat and cubby box and still got the random writing in pencil above the windscreen and bright red axles. Ive taken out the original engine as it got so smokey (even by landy standards) it was raising eyebrows at mot time and replaced it with a rebuilt engine out of another landy, not much faster but i dont look like im on fire atleast.

Thanks for posting the pics. It looks very cosseted :)

Please feel free to get in touch should you ever wish to sell... I'd be very tempted to buy it back if the opportunity arose!

This. It was actually my brother's car, owned from 2004-2008. We did loads of fettling on it, I even did a load of rewiring in the engine bay after a long term coolant leak rotted the wiring insulation.

He eventually sold it, with a heavy heart, when the gearbox gave up. It needed a lot of small bits sorting which were fairly inconsequential in themselves but added up to too much for him at that time. In fairness parts supply was getting a bit sketchy even then, and he used it every day for work etc.

He offered it to me, for free, but I had no money and literally nowhere to put it. It was sold to someone on one of the owners clubs who, I believe, sold it on fairly shortly after and it promptly disappeared off the radar. I've kicked myself every single day since and can barely look at pictures of it even now.

If anyone knows where it is please let me know, though I am under no illusions as to where it probably ended up....

These:

BXs.jpg

Yep, both of them. I shall never drive their like again. Apologies for the cruddy picture quality, it was taken almost 20 years ago on a stills camera I didn't have much idea about using

On the left is a 1988 BX 19 GTi 16 Valve (E880 RLJ) which I sold to a mate who I lost touch with for many years. When I caught up with him he said the gearbox fell out of it (quite common apparently) and he traded it in for a... a... I can't hardly bring myself to say it, a 1.6 Fezzer

On the right is a BX 16 Valve (K... can't remember), which I bought only a couple of years old and very few miles from a lease hire place somewhere near Birmingham I think. I must admit I didn't think it was as well put together as the other, the wiring loom said it was made in some place called Yugoslavia (must be crap then  ). I sold it to another fan because I wanted a car for my then girlfriend to learn to drive in, which turned out to be a 1.8 Ashtray which felt like it's handbrake was stuck on after the BXes.

This is all have left of them, 1 crappy picture  Still, that's more than I have of the girlfriend...

I've had a lot of cars but only one I really really shouldn't have got rid of as I loved it, 89 1.3 escort, 2 door, black with an xr3 interior which I put a 5 speed box in. Was a twat to get away from the lights I only got rid as I thought it had a broken petrol pump. Could be I was also tried to run it on as little as possible...

A mint 89 1.6 cavalier mk2 hatchback red was amazing but somehow the engine broke after changing the ht leads

Lastly AEH250Y capri cabaret 2 had it for years but only drove it for about 2 weeks! Stored then dragged out the garage to work on it. Instead it started to rot away sold it to some kids for about £350 about 5 years ago and was glad to see it go but now I'm not so sure. A dvla check last week says it's still alive!
