They must still be dirt cheap too. Pointless comment, but the Vitesse is still here gathering dust if you decide 2 litres just 'ain't enough!

I found a lovely mk1 Primera estate in deep green. Full MOT, low mileage. I'll see if I can find it.

I don't know if the OP lives near Birmingham but if you do then this beauty is in town for £300 with an MOT (but no Tax).

Time to find a Mark 1 Primera and salt it away in the Bollox museum

I'm kind of back on this, just outbid at the last minute yesterday on a sweet one-owner 2000 Primera 2.0 that was only half an hour away. It only went for £230 though so i can't complain too much, i should have dug a bit deeper!

Does anyone know what the differences are in terms of power output between the various 2.0 P10/P11Primeras? I know the GT ones are pretty badass at 158bhp or something but seemingly there are a few different levels of tune and i don't know what they are & which models are which. Any suggestions?

10 months ticket

3 months Tax.

Leather, aircon and cruise control, with a selection of wanky wheels. Pretty nice place to be on a daily basis, without the worry of immanent autobox implosion that comes with the autos

At the risk of repeating myself, I must counter the proliferation of Hondas presented over the last couple of pages by pointing out that they suck enormous levels of donkey dong in the fuel economy stakes.

Buy my Merc for some properly engineered 2 litre goodness. Have I mentioned that already? Doesn't mean you shouldn't

Welcome back D.Hirst. You've been sorely missed!

Neither is/was ever going to be a worldbeater in economy terms, but life's too short to count mpgs unless you're having to fill up every day.

Peugeot was a 2.0 GLX, and very very good to drive.  I would have kept it had I not needed something taller and embarked on the epic Chevrolet adventures chronicled in these here pages.  I liked it that much and was sad to let it go.

Volvo is a 2.3 turbo auto, and makes the Peugeot feel like an Austin Maxi, the difference is so huge.  That would be a Maxi retro-fitted with a VW diesel engine on the original gearbox, and painted brown.  I can see me holding on to the Volvo for some years (as I did with my previous Volvos).

Were I suddenly in need of a cheap beater, these would be top of my list.

True, but then 2-litre P11 Primeras aren't exactly paragons of frugality either.

In my experience, if you're after fuel economy from an ageing 2-litre petrol-engined family hatch, the best bet is a Mk1 Laguna, for some reason.  I've had use of a couple and both managed well over 40mpg driven sensibly - and having spoken to various people who've owned them this seems to be pretty much par for the course.

2 litre beater PURCHASED!

Won this on eBay the other night for £225. I've now been in touch with the seller who seems a sound enough feller. He reckons the car is all in good working order with no problems that should stop me driving it home form Brum so I'm gonna collect it one night next week and immediately press it into 'daily duty' service!

Its a 2.0 8v so about 115-120bhp I think. Probably not the most exciting but pretty rare now and should keep me amused for a couple of months at least. I can't wait to collect it! Must admit I think the wheels are pretty fugly on it if anyone has any ideas.

Posted

Wow. I'm liking that a lot. Good choice! Might be in the market for a 2-litre beater myself at some point soon. (if I can find any money)

Posted

Nice one, you can hardly go wrong at the price.  The wheels suit it, they're a bit odd but then the car's an odd shape so it works.  Always liked the look of these but they seem to have almost vanished.  All in full working order?

Posted

I really like that, I think you've done well there, especially for that kind of money.

Posted

Aye, 115bhp - looks like the same engine as the Mk3 Golf GTI. Actually quite a nice drive, plenty of low-down pull and in something a little more Mk3 Golf-shaped I was easily getting 41-42mpg on a commute.

Didn't realise they were so much of a VAG bitsa - look like Corrado dials?

Are the wheels 4- or 5-stud? There's plenty of options (Ronal Teddies being one of them)

Posted

Got a feeling they're 4-stud. I saw a 16v GT one of these go through the bay a few weeks back, it looked a total cracker and made about 600 £QUID. I also remember a back page article in CAR by Richard Bremner that was very complimentary about how these drive so i am looking forward to giving it a blezz.

Nice purchase Bol. Assuming you haven't got a ride from the Station to the sellers house, let me know and I'll be happy to pick you up and drop you there.

You can't argue with that for the price, can you?  Well bought sir!
