Falling from grace?

I'd guess it is would be no more likely to go wrong than a new Astra/Focus/Megane etc and I know what I would rather drive around in should I spend £14k on a car.

Age kills cars of especially combined with short runs. That's why you could step in a 5 year old 200,000 mile car and it would feel fine.

I thought they looked great when they came out but now I think they look like an insignia. Probably still have one though..

You must be very rich.

Don't be daft... I work for the company. My Son works at the branch that is selling this.... I reckon I might get a tad of discount. But let's be honest. A top spec diesel Auto Tranny Astra, the same age, with less miles, is only 3-4K cheaper.... Which is the biggest risk? And which ones makes you arrive in comfort? With luggage and integrity in one place.....

I do like these. don't want one, but I'd be happy to run it. bearing in mind that given another year or two it will be worth the square root of bugger all.

I must admit I looked at the Jag without tweaking as to what it was at first, I honestly thought it was a Lexus something or other........

Mmm, are you suggesting it could be a cheap Kia or Hyundai? I'll never forget the Fiesta keyfob and distorting plastic door mirrors which I pointed out - very rudely - on a friend's new XKR8 or something. His old Sovereign was a far nicer place in which to bring home totty..

There's a lot of these around for under £10k, 12 months ago I was looking at them and the cheapest 150,000 milers were £13/14k. As others have said they've dated very quickly and no doubt the first £5,000 one isn't far away. Makes the ten bags I spunked on a two year old Chrysler 300 look like a sensible investment, but if we wanted a return on our money we'd all be buying mk2 Escorts and vw mein kampf wagens.

I used to do work for Ringways in Leeds and all the directors got these new and I don't get them. I thought they looked cheap. Like normal family cars, not sports cars like Jags  I would rather buy this:

We're talking 14 bags here?

Tellya wot, for one loop less, I'd get me this:

My car is my castle and as a matter of fact, I do own the fuggin road.

Add to this that in five years time, I'd get my money back, whereas if I threw it at that Jag pot-bellied pig, I'd have the square root of fugg all left.

I thought it was a Lexus as well, if you're getting a Jag get one that looks like a Jag.

I feel that there are two problems with running new-ish luxobarges : The first is depreciation, as Junkman has already said. The previous owner would have already lost 10K, but there's still another 10K to be lost before the car celebrates a decade on the road.

The second problem is complexity and cost of parts. Even if the car is a paragon of reliability, only requiring routine items, it should still be very expensive to run. I can't imagine picking up a set of XF discs and pads for my usual £40...

I always thought they looked a bit like a Mondeo although the new Mondeo now looks like an Aston:

Where's the gear selector in that Jag?

Good point... Quick google revealed this.

Call me an old-fashioned pessimist, but all this electrickery is bound to fail one day, rendering the car undriveable.

I know it doesn't fit with the AS ethos but a lightly used barge can still have a lot of life left in it, I charge people strong money to drive them around the country so the usual 10 year old vomit smelling Skoda with tape over all the warning lights doesn't really cut it. Similarly blowing tens of thousands in finance on an S-class or something is money down the drain when you're doing over 100,000 miles a year.

The sweet spot seems to be ex- lease 60-80k 'prestige' cars from auction ,in the last 10 years I've had a Volvo S80,S-type 4.0, 2 e39 530d's, e61 525d, Merc CLS diesel and currently a 300C estate, and so far no OMGECUFAILIURE, no MEGAMONEYMAINDEALERONLY disasters just a lot of expensive fully synthetic and filters and the occasional ebay brake and suspension parts, I don't ever service, just repair or replace as needed.

Don't worry I still prefer driving my old 300tdi Disco ,rusty Eunos or e30, but if I didn't have a shiny big diesel barge to terrorise the fast lane at 120 would I still enjoy plodding around in damp rusty misery? Does this make me a fair weather shiter ? I tell myself if I didn't need it for work I'd smoke round in a Renault 30 or Granada GXL but would I?

Fuck me ! It's all got a bit philosophical ,from justifying wasting good beer money on a nearly new Jag!
