Miserable holidays.

Recommended Posts

Saw this beauty in my local petrol station, and couldn't help thinking how miserable it would be to go away for a weekend in it. Imagine a couple stranded in this, on a wet bank holiday weekend. I wondered what the interior would look like, a galley kitchen, double bed, chemical loo, not.

Who or what could get any pleasure from this?

Well, you don't have to go far in it.

One of Mrs Livered's work colleagues turns up every day in one of those. She's quite jealous, because he gets to spend his lunch breaks on a comfy chair with his feet up, radio on and the kettle close at hand for a decent brew.

Thats exactly the sort of thing I would love as an alternative to camping. Might be shite but it's approx 14726498% better than a tent.

Exactly, Mr Imp. I currently holiday in a tent. Anything that is at least the same size as my tent but with a proper (ish) bed, some kind of mini-kitchen setup and no need to put it up when you arrive is an improvement as far as I'm concerned.

The shitest camper van has to be the starcraft 6 wheeler cortina conversion.

This comes a pretty close 2nd though

Microcampers do fill that happy little medium between tenting and caravanning.  I'd love a microcamper one day, but only for me to enjoy.  I don't like other people enough to want to share a microcamper.  I'd deliberately holiday when it was pissing it down so I could sit enjoying my cups of tea and bacon butties while families and young people fought to put up leaky festival tents in the howling wind and pouring rain.

I don't much like people.

That is one thing i wish i had.

Really could do with a break, going off somewhere quiet for a week or 2 would be fantastic.

not had a holiday since the 70s

This camping or caravaning thing never did anything for me.

My idea of a camper van is this:

How many nights in my life can I sleep in a B&B until I have spent as much money as a camper van costs?

I reckon the rationale of teeny campers is to use them solely as somewhere to kip and cook. If your idea of holidaying revolves around hillwalking, or stately homes and museums etc., then it could be just the thing.

It's got to be better than our bastard tent: look at it the wrong way, and bits need stitching back on, and the groundsheet does a passable impression of the Ganges in rainy season.

I agree with Junkman that for someone limited to four weeks of holiday per year, the cost of buying and maintaining a campervan probably exceeds that of hotels or B&Bs.

However, when I become a pensioner, I would be very tempted to spend my summers in the Iberian peninsula with one of these beauties :

I suppose you lot would be seen out in a Prius with a huge phallus mounted to it as well? You have no style.

I hope they make that Prius camper by carving it first out of expanding foam and then applying a good skim of fibreglass before cracking out the heated up Dulux and a 4" brush to finish the job off.

I agree it's better than a tent. There's nothing worse than a tent. I'd still rather have a B&B.

I've not had a 'real' holiday since buying a two berth bay window with a non elevating roof in the year of our Lord 1996, long before they had scene tax applied.

It's brilliant, although all we do is walk the dog and drink copious amounts of alcohol.

But in a very chic and sophisticated way.

I'm the only one who likes tents then? Well, ok, tolerates tents. Seems most folk at Shitefest are kipping in their cars, which makes even that Golf seem like living the life of luxury. Kipping in cars is guaranteed to be horrible in my book, especially if that car is a Citroen Dyane.

I like tents. But mine's A) massive, and B) a bag o' shite (in a bad way). I did consider shelling out for a Vango Force 10, for my own pleasure, but I'm way too skint for that.

A retired neighbour said much the same to me this very morning vis-a-vis the bloke in between who's just spaffed FORTY TWO GRAND IN CASH on a motorhome, admittedly one of a quality that impressed even cynical old me.

(I fit in so well round here, with my shitty old Cits and a broken Merc...)

Did ScaryoldCortina sometimes of this parish not do a bit of work on this?

The more-wheel ex-Cortina is so wrong, but the Pick-Arse-O is wronger...

You couldn't get much more miserable than the old couple I saw at the weekend sitting on the side of the A635 on Saddleworth Moor in 70's deckchairs in the drizzle at the back door of their Bedford Rascal campervan.
